Why they even attempted this shit is beyond me. They lost their chance to put out a solid stealth/samurai game as soon as Ghost of Tsushima dropped. Not only did it respect the culture better and represent the time period in a mostly accurate way, it also gave us a very deep combat system, with unique mechanics, interesting (fictional) characters as well as real characters. Not too mention it also did all of that with some of the best style and graphics this generation. Ubisoft is hamstringing themselves with AC Shadows, because if any of its core mechanics or storytelling isn't up to the same par as GoT, you'll lose fan interest at blinding speed. ESPECIALLY now that Ghost of Yōtei has been announced.

Ubisoft's level of respect for history and culture: 1. Hip hop music for Yasuke 2. One-legged Torii gate, a symbol of the destruction caused by the atom bomb. 3. Chinese music in AC Shadows World Trailer. Instrument used is a Sanxian, not a Shamisen. Whatever Ubisoft is going through right now, it deserves a lot worse than that. Edit: a lot of Ubisoft bootlickers are desperately trying to defend this shit.

Isn't Ubisoft a French company? How come it's behaving so absurdly unsightly. It doesn't add up almost. The acting up unsightly, sure, but the overly emphasis on different values, not in the slightest. The French couldn't care less who or what you are. What the heck is this. A game set in India with Bollywood dance sequences in the background would actually be far less offensive than what Ubisoft is doing. At least Bollywood IS from India. In AC Shadows they're playing African-American music for a man from Mozambique living in Japan!!!

@@ricardorocha6612 Suppose a game similar to Assassin's Creed was based in India, and a British character came to help India gain freedom, which never actually happened. This could result in a huge court case in our country, potentially leading to a ban not only in India but also in neighboring countries with strong ties to India. Now, imagine if a game were based on Hindu religion and included some fictional content for gameplay purposes that ended up hurting the religious sentiments of people. In such a case, people could go as far as burning down Ubisoft's office and even threatening the CEO's life. In India, people don't forgive even the smallest mistakes when it comes to Hinduism.
I remember developer logs from AC2. They sent several artists to Italy to find locations and historic neighborhoods for photoshoots, references and inspiration. I guess this time budget was thinner.
Old AC developers were major history nerds. They loved the time periods, people and places their games featured and it showed. The new ones actively hate it. History is bad in their ideology so all they care about is spreading their message.

There is only one reason why they chose a black protagonist in an Assassins Creed Japan, and its definitely not because they have devs who are passionate and knowledgeable about Japan.

The more kind side of me that feels bad for them wishes they would make a comeback and actually started making good games (or even just acceptable games) but... the other not-so-kind side of me which surges when I remember all the stuff they've done... really wishes they would just straight up go bankrupt.
I suddenly don't feel bad about paying super low prices for years old games they still have at full price, and have the balls to charge over $100 for their full content.

What i hate the most about modern gaming and game companies is as an average consumer when we try to give feedback we are literally just talking to a brick wall. These companies will quite literally NEVER listen to their player base, and it’s so easy for them to just turn off any criticism. Comment section? Just disable it! Getting disliked into oblivion? Just turn of likes and dislikes! Tons of quote retweets? Doesn’t matter, not like there’s an actual human running their social media. They can literally just turn off their ears, and they won’t change until their companies are run into the ground, and in all honesty they probably won’t be, because there will always be the consumers happy to turn off their brain and buy buy buy the next product with a big logo on it. It made me laugh so hard when last year people were talking shit about mwiii “oh this game is terrible stop buying cod” “stop giving cod your money” “stop paying activision for trash” the second the black ops 6 trailer comes out the same people “I can’t wait to play zombies!” “This looks awesome! I’ll pay 100 dollars for the pre order edition!” “This definitely won’t be the same as last time!”
The problem is majority of gamers are, simply put "normies". Most people don't go out of their way to look into the stock value of games, get behind the scenes info, see what crazy stuff devs post on their socials, etc.. I do believe more people are becoming informed but if these companies keep having their hubris and agendas on full display, eventually even "normies" are going to start waking up...but the pendulum is shifting so that's good at least
We've seen this exact comment a million times. We already don't buy those games. Why do you think gamepass, ubiplus etc is getting so big? So we can pay a few bucks to test for slop without the two hour steam refund limit that most games can pad past and then cancel the subscription.

15:37 I don't think Muta understands how batsh-t insane Assassin's Creed lore was from the beginning. "The Truth" minigames in ACII and Brotherhood are absolutely BONKERS! The Isu all being this precursor race of super scientists that inspired the religions of the world like Greco-Roman and Norse mythology has also been a thing since ACII. Let me give you an example of how crazy it gets. In the AC Brotherhood "The Truth" minigames, it is revealed that human kind was NOT evolved from apes. And rather, the Templars used a piece of Eden to somehow create a fake homo-erectus skeleton or something for some reason. Humanity was created by the Isu, the precursor race, in their image. BUT, it's also true that in the AC universe that if enough humans believe something, it becomes true. I'm pretty sure in AC Revelations, it's shown that the Isu tried to get humanity to gaslight itself into making a solar flare not happen, but the humans and Isu were too busy warring with each other to make it work. Which the Templars then tried to accomplish with an apple of Eden tied to a SATELLITE! As well as one on the f*cking MOON! And Neil Armstrong put it there! This means that humans both are and are not evolved from apes in Assassin's Creed!

Never forget that Ubislop consistently bragged about how AC: Shadows was "Authentic". And this, more than anything else, is why people are shifting on this game so hard for it's design choices
They removed the crossbow from the original game for not being authentic. Even though they did exist back then, they felt he wouldn't have been able to find one. They then put tons of work into being historically accurate with settings and characters. Then they slowly went downhill. This was the only saving grace because their mechanics, bugs and 100% achievements are the worst aspects of their games. But now they are making a game about a guy vaguely mentioned in some made up story. Which is funny because all their protagonists are kinda made up, surrounded by actual real people. But they legit said "we need to be woke let's get a black dude, oh look it's authentic!" Biggest clown shoes ever. I can maybe almost accept him, just not in the way they brought him into the game.
It's good that they have decided to delay the game considering the backlash from various areas. The gaming industry needs refreshment and repetitive versions of any game will only lead to their downfall. It's about time game developers focus on creating unique and engaging content to recapture the interest of the audience.
Why? Concord was slop, made to try to get as much money as possible from a saturated market, with little to no thought or substance put forth. Is this the same?

There is an AC game in India: "Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India". Wouldn't say the OST is the best in the franchise, but it is alright, no Tunak Tunak though - at least not this time
8:30 No! It's actually worse than that though! Because at least they'd be playing real Indian music! They are playing AMERICAN HIP HOP and attributing that to an African historical figure (likely a slave to a Feudal Lord and nothing more). It's not even African music... They are basically saying "Meh, black is black, close enough!" This is easily the most out of touch Assassin's Creed game ever. You gotta remember, Ubisoft used to be the company that did such meticulous research on the cultures and geography of their setting that they were able to provide the rebuilders of Notre Dame full schematics of the cathedral that was burned and partially destroyed because nobody else had those detailed plans. They went there and made the plans themselves for one of their games (I think Unity?). Look at AC 2 and all the work that went into that game. After Origins, this new direction became apparent. They don't put as much thought into their story or setting anymore.
I still remember how when AC2 came out people were extremely impressed with how accurate it was in displaying Italy. Who knew that years later they couldn't put half as much work in to save the entire company from ruin?
My dream is Ubisoft has to sell of the Assassin's Creed IP to a company that actually cares about it. It's been over a decade since an AC game felt worth it.
Ubisoft, Konami and Activision-Blizzard are the Kings of working hard to build a solid reputation making great games, only to let greed and ignorance plow their companies straight into their graves.
I was looking for this!!! Ubisoft is too busy circle jerking the AC franchise, yet they clearly have a fan base that is still waiting for a mascot they neglected (Rayman 4) But atp, I wouldn’t trust Ubisoft with making a Rayman game and would rather them just leave him alone…
I still don’t get why they don’t just use a Japanese man for the protagonist. If you want a man of African descent make a game during the era of Shaka Zulu.
or just make the black man of African descent be a side character, at the end , people wanted a japanese themed AC game to play as a Japanese man or woman, you don't hear anyone complain about the female protagonist, nobody cares since it's whatever and you had people like her actually doing shit like that, meanwhile, there wasn't a black samurai, a black retainer sure, why not have Yasuke's master be the main protagonist with Yasuke going with him to protect and help him.
This might be part of the problem. Ubisoft considers 76 critic and 54 user score on metacritic as "solid scores". I don't know about ubisoft but if I spent 200 million on a game and it averaged a 6.5/10 I wouldn't consider that "solid"
Yeah, 6.5 isn't bad... but that is very disappointing especially given the money spent. If I made something and it was a 6.5, I'd be kinda disappointed, but still glad I made my own game. I'd be a bit more.. expressive if I spent even 1 mil.
The one legged torii gate reminiscent of the Nagasaki nuclear destruction on the collector’s edition figurine and their refusal to stop selling the art book with stolen art says otherwise.
8:08 Honestly I wouldn’t mind that cause if there’s an Assassin Creed game set in India, then yeah, expect Indian culture infused in. That actually sounds like a solid idea for the franchise. But the issue with Shadows is that the location is set in Japan, so you would expect feudal Japanese music, but just because a black main character is involved, you also add the hip hop music. I think that’s an important distinction.
I always thought it would’ve been cool if Yasuke could stealth in restricted areas with enemy Samurai since he has the build and would know how samurai operate. Would just need a mask and matching armor to blend in.
@@dravenripley9468Yeah. Game was showing him killing people in the middle of the day surrounded by witnesses. As well as ramming to a gate. Base on their marketing, the game about assassins is only 50% stealth. And his parts are mandatory, so you can't play as only the ninja.
Historically Yasuke was around 6'0 /182 cm. However, the badass samurai Todo Takatora was 6'3 /190 cm and 23 years old in 1579. There were large Sengoku samurai like Saito Yoshitatsu, his family and son. Yoshitatsu was 6'6 / 197 cm.
People still Keep Trying to give ubisoft the benefit of the doubt. With the whole, it's not always been historically. After what happens to the Crew, I would not even buy The Crew 2 for 1 dollar. Imagine paying for a game then one day the game is taken away from you with no refund. Would not want to waste money on buying something that you cannot own permanently.
I dont wanna sound like a culture warrior, but i think a lot of the controversy with Shadows would've been avoided if they made Yasuke an important side character instead of the player character. I dont have a problem with him being in the game, even in an exaggerated sense, but I don't like that you're playing a real person in a series that has always had fictional protagonists. Anyway, Ghost of Yotei looks far better, gonna save my money for that instead of giving it to Ubisoft.
I tend to agree with this. In past games they’ve always taken historical figures and made them side characters. It worked so much better for keeping it feeling “authentic” while also giving them a chance to insert the Assassins vs Templars story.
Why can't they just make a fictional shinobi/assassin with an African origin, one that is less historical tainting since it doesn't involve a specific real person, in a game with the title of ASSASSIN'S CREED?
Not just that, they could've even made Yasuke as a black samurai and get away with it. the issue is that they constantly were boasting how "historically accurate" they are. If they just from the get go leave out the historical accurate part and do what AC generally does anyway and just blame it on the templars who have slightly altered history or something, this would've never happened. but they first went "historical accurate!" so "we're taking some creative liberty!" to "we're being as historical accurate, but we'll go past the established truth" (basically saying they'll rewrite established history) They went back and forth so many times now that they literally shot themselves with a pistol, then amputated that leg with a shotgun, just to repeat it on the other leg, it's actually insane.
@@DarkDyllon No people would have still complained I promise, you underestimate the racism. If this was about historical accuracy, they would be mad about the COUNTLESS historical inaccuracies stacked sky high in other AC games. Just look at GTA 6 trailer and all the comments it got. It's set in diverse af Florida and yet there was tons of backlash about the black and hispanic presence in the game. I saw white (and asian and black tbh) dudes talking about how they can't wait to unalive the black women NPCs in the game. Just an upsetting culture that's grown worse in the community, and as a female gamer I just stay to myself when I would love to connect with fellow gamers and even date, but the white suprmcy and n cel and red pill culture drives women away - yes even white women, myself and all of my gamer gfs stay away. The ironic part is those guys talk about the "chads" but those guys are actually genuinely better company, and feel more safe to be around. It's disappointing.
Absolutely agree with Mutahar when he says that Assassin's Creed was never meant to be historically accurate. Having played 95% of the entire franchise, I've never really thought it to be anything but sci-fi historical action. I even played through all the education parts of Origins for my 100% completion. That being said, it will always rub me the wrong way when Ubisoft will try to shoehorn a type of character that parts from the mold of the era and tries to convince us that it's normal and real. If it was a unique character they made with his own origin that's well written, such as that of a slave who washes up on the shore of Japan or whatever, I wouldn't give two shits. But to pick a character and make us believe he's real and historically accurate rather than historical adjacent and fictional as they've always been feels wrong. In addition, what's wrong with just having a Japanese lead. What compelled them to think that for the biggest game of their franchise, going to Japan, home to stealth and Ninjas, really the inspiration and foundation for what it means to be Assassins and stealthy, they elected to have one of their protagonists not be Japanese at all is just extremely strange to me. But in Italy we get Italians, Egypt we have Egyptians, England we have Brits, but Japan we don't have that at all. It's just a strange shift that is incredibly difficult to ignore. On top of that, in this era of game development where every single fucking game feels like there's some agenda pieced into it, trying to meet a diversity quota, it really struck a wrong chord at the wrong time, and the hip hop music controversy exploded that beyond compare. Ubisoft needs to stick to their originality and authentic landscapes rather than trying to meet diversity quotas and partitioning their games trying to make as much money as possible while spending as little money as possible on actual development on things like innovation and depth. But they're in too deep. They can redeem themselves greatly by cancelling the game and basically rewriting the story and changing the lead but the amount of money wasted simply won't fly by the investors. They'd rather publish a strange and mid assassin's creed game, trying to make back whatever money they wasted, instead of making a game true to the era yet fun for players and aid their reputation. Let's be honest reputation is something triple A studios like this do not give two shits about. If it ever did, we'd have live service EA games that you don't need to pay yearly for and Ubisoft games that don't cost an arm and a leg to get the full experience.

But Japanese trap beat? If anything he's Afro-Japanese not Afro-American... Jeez Ubisoft
What you’re suggesting would absolutely suck for video game combat music. If the music wasn’t accurate to the time period, it would be no better than them using the trap beat.
I will give them credit, The Crew Motorfest actually is a step up from previous titles, ranging from much better handling to simple details like cars sinking in mud or sand while doing a burnout (because that’s considered impressive for a AAA racer)… I then take that credit away because the only game from the franchise with soul was the first game, the one they shut down (and ruined with updates anyways).
I remember people asking for an AC game set in Japan almost since the beginning of the series. I never would have guessed that the reason we never got it for this long was because Ubisoft hates Japanese people.

Then they pumped out two games in 2012, and again in 2014. Unity shit the bed but it was patched to acceptability. But when they took off a year for Origins, they changed a lot about the series for the worse, which would bleed through even more in later games. It took them 3 years to make a game that was originally DLC for Valhalla. Where is your yearly game?
Dude, old AC games were more historically accurate than this one... They even didnt put the crossbow in AC because it was not historically accurate. And in several promo videos they tried to sell the game as historically accurate.

Yasuke SHOULD be in the game. NOT including him would've been a huge missed opportunity for the game. However, we should NOT be playing as him or any historical figure at all. @AxleTrade Yeah, that would work, but even if there was additional character, it could have been her brother or uncle, who's older and no longer an active shinobi. Some memory sequence could have us working alongside Yasuke on some missions. I'm pretty sure nobody would even care or bother to comment about this. It just wouldn't matter to anyone. It would have been fine
Lets be honest with ourselves. Ubisoft wanted to make game set in feudal Japan, but couldnt because its a setting difficult to make without upsetting "the activists" (you know, old school japanese folks arent exactly known for acceptance for other cultures). So they decided to dig up some obscure historical figure that happened to be black guy and used his name to essentially deflect people who say that black samurai is just as out of place as AC cobra is in age of empires. Thank you so much for recommending Shadows of Doubt. It looks very interesting, and I wouldn't have even known about it had you not mentioned it. On that note, I 100% agree that games developed out of passion and love for the craft can be found in droves in the indie scene. It's where the creativity of smaller devs really shine in a way that even the most talented devs working for a AAA studios with suits breathing down their necks simply cannot replicate.
Honestly I disagree. Ubisoft has always been very safe, and it going down would probably be a pretty big signal to the industry that they need to start innovating again, because the old formula isn't working. Having some giants go down might just push things in the right direction.
I personally hate average games more then bad games because with a bad game you can eventually forget about the experience, but with an average game it’ll drive you insane with all the wasted potential
The sword not being historically accurate is like a non-subject...every episode has inaccuracies like this, it's not as if AC1 or 2 didn't already have discrepancies in the way they portrayed their period. I'm in three different subs about AC, and it's a constant subject of "how can they not get this right" amongst history buffs. And that actually makes for great conversations at times, where you learn a thing or two about the era. I think the fact that a modeler went for a reproduction of a One Piece sword is way more problematic...but as you say, these games are more historical fantasy and scifi than precise recreation. They give you the vibe not really the facts. The rest though is so cringe. The hip-hop in combat is so out of character for this franchise, and such a "how do you do fellow kids" moment. And the research about Yasuke :/ And the backtrack from Ubi/Epic only to "okay we need money, let's release it on Steam": it's cool there's more options for the pc gamers who will play the game, but it's also hilarious in terms of timing.
that makes me wonder what the reaction would have been if they just made another black samurai, but an original protagonist inspired by the legend of yasuke? AC games were never 100% accurate but they were believable, and from what i remember they also never claimed historical accuracy or made it a selling point of the series, so i think that the insistence that’s everything is studied and accurate is where the disconnect comes from.

Assassins Creed Shadows must've been hit with the Ghost of Yotei jumpscare.
Hardly a jump scare, trailer made me fall asleep
If it's such a "dream project", than why is every aspect of it half-arsed like it's an AI generated project, couldn't be bothered to get some ACTUAL historians on board, and learn the most basic of social norms for said country you are making a game about?

Honestly I wouldn’t mind that cause if there’s an Assassin Creed game set in India, then yeah, expect Indian culture infused in. That actually sounds like a solid idea for the franchise. But the issue with Shadows is that the location is set in Japan, so you would expect feudal Japanese music, but just because a black main character is involved, you also add the hip hop music. I think that’s an important distinction.
And nothing of value was lost.
"renewed stealth" with a 6'5 fully armored only black dude in the area. Right...
To be fair he was advertised as more of the brute force character the rpgs are known for.

@@negative6442 I still haven't bought BG3 and Armored Core 6. I want MH Wilds too. And gonna pirate AC Mirage.
If they just from the get go leave out the historical accurate part and do what AC generally does anyway and just blame it on the templars who have slightly altered history or something, this would've never happened.
but they first went "historical accurate!" so "we're taking some creative liberty!" to "we're being as historical accurate, but we'll go past the established truth" (basically saying they'll rewrite established history)
They went back and forth so many times now that they literally shot themselves with a pistol, then amputated that leg with a shotgun, just to repeat it on the other leg, it's actually insane.
@@DarkDyllon No people would have still complained I promise, you underestimate the racism.

And the research about Yasuke :/
And the backtrack from Ubi/Epic only to "okay we need money, let's release it on Steam": it's cool there's more options for the pc gamers who will play the game, but it's also hilarious in terms of timing.
that makes me wonder what the reaction would have been if they just made another black samurai, but an original protagonist inspired by the legend of yasuke? AC games were never 100% accurate but they were believable, and from what i remember they also never claimed historical accuracy or made it a selling point of the series, so i think that the insistence that’s everything is studied and accurate is where the disconnect comes from.
