Thanks for watching! Make sure to check the next video in this series which explains the moral guidelines for yogis, the 'Yamas & Niyamas'. And if you want to do a bit of reading, here's the version of the Yoga Sutras text that I recommend: amzn.to/3uRBxVY (affiliate link).
I learned so much. I am quite new to yoga and am exploring all things routiene right now. Im a veteran with tons of joint pain and a serious lack of flexibility. Your video gave me some direction. Thanks!
Great video Emily. Very informative ..Just a minor correction..the fourth one ‘brahmacharya’ is pronounced slightly differently. 'Cha' should be said like how we say 'cha’ in the word 'chair’..
Very helpful and easy to understand🙌thanks for educating about the other limbs and the essence of Yoga. It is so important to remember there's more to Yoga and it's too easy to forget nowadays. Thanks❤️
I just found your channel, and this series in particular is exactly the yoga content I've been looking for. ❣ P.S. I live in another Stamford (in Connecticut)! 👋
This channel deserves much more love than those laud american yoga channels who happen to have millions of subs. I'm talking to you stupid TH-cam algorithm. Thanks for your gentle and sweat instructions Emily. Cannot wait to see more of your videos.
Great knowledge it's a greatest treasure of India that is very complicated for western countries to understand also i recommend to read Bhagvat geeta which is also associated to yoga the more you read the more you enlightened
Just echoing all of the comments below! I'm a yoga teacher and know about the eight limbs but it's so nice to be taught sometimes and just remind myself of living yogically off the mat. Xx
Wasn't expecting to hear you're from my hometown haha. Small world! I've not been back since like 2011 though. Anyway, thanks for the information! I was wondering about the philosophy. I don't know how much of the "sitting in absolute stillness" is accessible to someone with ADHD, but it's an interesting thing to aim for. And even if I never get that far with it, I think there's still a lot to be learned from even just the first two limbs.
A very small world! The meditative side of yoga can definitely be more challenging with ADHD but could be really beneficial to try :) There certainly is a lot to learn even just from the yamas and niyamas!
just came across your channel and i must say it's lovely..so much insight into yoga and really it's true essence and not just physical poses... Just want to correct a few words ...the letters CH in Brahmacharya are pronounced as how you would pronounce the word "Change" And the word for concentration and focus is pronounced as "Dhaaarna"..hope this helps... love and light from India 💕
I am an Indian and the only thing I know about yoga is the correct pronounciation of the Sanskrit words. Rest I am learning from you and other Indian youtubers.
Our mistake are, what we do the most, we read two three book then we try to teach someone, but even we don’t know the real meaning of them. Other things, book writers, they are try to expose every thing in one small book, 😢 funny thing is, we all believe, that is right. Guys, please more research and more learn , because I sow many mistakes in this video, other videos and many modifications books, I am not trying here I am over smart, if you in spiritual path. you must know the correct words, one word got wrong meaning you will understand totally wrong meaning. Then you walk-in deferent road. I am not going to show you any corrections here, but best thing who are in spiritual path, better you know Sanskrit to understand real pathangali yoga sutra, or any other books, if you read 10 book, they so much miss writing. I am not complaining them, think, why many people not bean enlighten, that’s the my main question. my suggestion learn many as you can before you giving something. I give you example, if you have 5 mangoes, 3 are got bad, 2 are good, which one you eat? I hope everyone one got the my point, sorry for my English, English is not my mother tongue. If any one got hurts I am really sorry, I wish every one walks to the divine. 🙏
This is not accurate. The aim of Yoga is to connect to the Atman and then to Brahman. Why are you divorcing Yoga from the Hindu religion? Why aren't you crediting Hinduism? Patanjali himself was a Hindu instructing his Hindu students with the Yoga Sutras. The Yoga sutras are one of 6 orthodox philosophies of Hinduism. I don't understand why that isn't being explained here when the title of this video is "What is Yoga?"
Hi Sydney Grace :) I apologise, I should have explained more clearly that Yoga has it's roots in Hinduism. It is absolutely not my intention to divorce Yoga from the Hindu religion.
Not everyone practises yoga with that aim and also that may be the aim of those who want to practise or take Yoga for liberation or Moksha (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga#Definition_in_classical_texts). Hindus approach yoga not via Patanjali texts but through Yoga Upanishads (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga_Upanishads). Yes, you are right about Patanjali. Western Philosophies are separated from religion whereas Indian Philosophies are connected to Dharma. Also, this cannot be considered a crash course on Hinduism. She comes from a different culture and there are many issues with the current translation of words. She is not an expert and should not be considered one. You are just taking things too seriously, bugging unnecessarily and better make your own videos.

Are these 8 limbs application to yoga overall, or specifically are for Ashtanga yoga?
