The narration is misleading in the beginning when they say that they’re in the middle of the ocean and untouched. All it takes is 10 people living on the island to have an impact on Coral reef systems.
It doesn't take many people to impact a coral reef, but in this particular case all of the islands we studied and surveyed in BIOT were uninhabited and protected in one of the largest MPAs in the world. These are some of the most remote reefs on Earth, but the point we were trying to make is that even here--in a place reefs should be thriving--there were signs of human impacts. Corals were bleaching, and even though fishing isn't permitted in the marine protected area, many of the big fish were gone and we found fishing gear on the seafloor. We didn't know it at the time, but this is some of the first footage of what would turn into a global mass-bleaching event.

AIMS annual report Summary 2021/22; The northern Great barrier reef has increased coral growth 36%, (in 2012 said it was gone forever)...while the southern has decreased 34%. The dynamics of the eco system are complex. Please continue to monitor but stay away from politics.
