  • A small job bricking up an old drafty window. The inside has been done in the past but the outside was left .We took out the frame , toothed out , cleared out the cavity and put in some insulation ready for the brickwork. we used new cheshire pre war 73mm bricks .
    We also needed a scaffold to reach ......enjoy

    I don’t know what it is with us old retired brickies we just can’t keep away. Thanks for replying back, if the bricks were that thick then it makes sense to get the best match possible and to be honest it didn’t look that bad a match and will probably weather down ok.

      No problem, I appreciate people taking the time to watch our channel and enjoy chatting back . I started uploading videos about 3 months ago after I found myself coming home from work and watching bricklaying videos and thought I’ll give that a go 👍🏼

      Phew, that opens a right can of worms about the match-up (NOT) between Imperial and metric standard brick sizes. I had to learn both systems during my apprenticeship and it was a total pain. Some godawful lash-ups were to be seen in the times before wall-starter kits were marketed or Imperial bricks were reintroduced for matching up.

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      brando6BL .Just had that problem on an extension. Trench block and 100 mm block up to DPC leaving 3 face on the outside (225 mm) problem is it’s 73 mm brickwork ( 249 mm) so the brickies finishing off the brickwork have got a load of cuts to do !

  • @edwardlees2992
    @edwardlees2992 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great job clean tidy very professional but surely you could have got secondhand bricks that would have matched better in colour and brick length. I’m a retired brickie and that’s what we would do most of the time whenever possible.

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could have got a load of free ones but I find re claimed are always on the big side in depth . Even on this job with new Cheshire pre Wars it was really tight getting them in and filling the toothers. The house brick were a bit strange as they were very narrow . Thanks for watching and commenting. We have another video of a garden wall where we have re used the old engineering brick 👍🏼

    GREAT VIDEO. GOOD JOB. Would really like to see you put out a video to properly build,plumb, square block leads. Some people have their own methods. I want to know the quick correct way of properly and quickly building a block corner lead. Would very much appreciate it. Subbed to your channel..

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild

      Jim Jam . Good old washing up liquid 😬, I normally use The concentrated plasticiser where you only put about 10 millilitres into a mix but forgot it .

    Hi mate, currently watching all your window bricking up videos as I need to brick one up, what mix did you go for please? Ive got a 1930s, with a cavity, it has been repointed with sand and cement in the past but original looks lime behind this.
    5 soft to 1 cement so its not too hard? Not sure theres any pont puting lime in the mix for a small area?
    I watched one of your other videos, alex asks what the mix is and you tell him the chargers broken 😂🤦🏻

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      🤣 We used to just mix 4 to 1 for everything but we use lime more and more now 🧱👍🏽

    Is that a fiberglass or rock wool insulation? Things are definitely different on my side of the pond but love seeing how things are done around the world. Great work as always

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Wargo . Yes John it’s fibre glass . They are called cavity batts . They come in rectangle sheets 4ftx18inch and widths from 2inch up to 4 inch . If you watch our extension video you will see the insulation in more detail .
      Thanks for watching and commenting from over the pond 👍🏼

    Maybe a silly question. Are the bricks above the window quite stable without a lintel? There's no risk of the wall collapsing before you get a chance to brick it all in?

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Woodyard Hi Mathew such a small opening is fine without a prop 👌🏼👍🏼🧱

      It’s a fantastic job . The house is probably 100 years old and the bricks are brand new . I’m a bricklayer not a magician. The video is probably nearly 2 years old and you are the first to complain about it 🙄
