- Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) are surface-to-air missiles designed for use by an individual or a small team, primarily to target enemy aerial assets. Often called shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, these weapons were first introduced in the 1960s by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the Redeye and Strela systems marking their debut.
Since then, more than 20 countries have manufactured an estimated one million MANPADS, either for their own use or for export.
MANPADS have been responsible for downing many helicopters as well as strike aircraft in Ukraine.
In this video, Defense Updates lists the Top 8 Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS)

Ukraine has shown the limits and strengths of MANPADS. MANPADS limited destructive capability can be overcome as technology has gotten better and seekers smaller which allows for bigger warheads but its limited range will never be overcome. Ukraine has shown that weapons like AIM-9 and AIM-120 for SHORAD are better than MANPADS against aircraft due to their substantially larger warheads but mostly due to their longer range over 20 miles. MANPADS are the 4th generation right now
I expect to deal with issues found in Ukraine that the 5th gen missile will have larger diameter between 80mm and 90mm at least to address short comings
How is the hell is stinger above vrba?
Good overview
The “Man Portable” part of the equation seems to have been lost on a couple of these (utilizing elaborate mounting equipment for launch).
Thats why US and Russian systems top the market, they are truly MANPAD and dont require much to sue
The US DoD/NATO designation for the Igla-S is the SA-18 Grouse and the 9K333 is the SA-29 Gizmo.
Oh yeah where is this video been all my life
I think that only shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles should be counted in the ranking of manpads. If it's tripod launched it should be disqualified
Yes and no
The reason we are seeing tripods is because technology has advanced
Thanks to carbon fiber , titanium and high strength aluminum
those tripods are relatively light
Ukraine has show the strenght and weakness of MANPAD
Limited destructive capable and range
In theory, you can address those but you have to make the missile likely heavier and that tripod will make life a lot easier
Red-eye early60s sam-7,stingers 80s,how many types now world wide,? Jf.
Close to 100 types from 16 manufacturers
The expansion is due the sanctions. Sanctions prevent many from acquiring such weapons so they make their own
China and Iran reverse engineered copies till they made their own. North Korea acquired FIM-92 from unknown source
Most former soviet bloc countries make reverse engineered copies of Russian weapons including MANPADS
more of these are supplied where army doesn't get to see any bomber aircraft or helicopter
Corvettes?
You have to differentiate between a portable system that a single soldier carries and move fast and another system with more components that cannot be carried by a single soldier and has to deploy it. example Igla vs Startreak. For other side Verba has more range ( 4km altitude and 7 km range) and can be deployed with a portable radar linked to a viewfinder so that the operator can watch the incoming threat.
Please do something different from top 10 whatever. Respectfully, please
Very Briefed And Summarized Ideas:
For the Russian they are usually manufacturing multiple weapon systems for preforming the same missions, only in manpads systems they do providing new generation and upgrading systems but not multiple systems competing between them and the international products, similar to our Chinese friends which are designing and producing multiple manpad systems, although unfortunately it uses the same guidance systems,
I think the Russian Armed Forces needs to compensate for the small size and modest capabilities of its air force (VVS) by deploying the largest possible number of manpads systems among its ground formations, especially the motorized infantry and even tanks divisions, similar to what the DPRK used to do by installing manpads systems on its armored fighting vehicles AFVs...
those manpads could be useful to shoot down cargo planes and commercial jets, as it happened by the blessed attempt by Al-Qaeda to shoot down a number of commercial flys belonging to the zionist entity, but the attempt failed...
regarding the nato alliance starting with what is very temporarily called the united states of america and to🦃,
I think it was valid during the cold war with duo to the possibility of this cold confrontation developing into a comprehensive hot war, as the skies of western europe were to ne clouded with thousands of MiGs and Sukhoi aircraft, alongside aerial decoy drones (decoy targets) and thousands of cruise missiles, not counting the continues heavy showers of MLRS missiles and ballistic missiles, crushing the nato military machine, then those manpads system could provide the tactical units some protection for certain period of time against the low flying aerial targets, thus now its a pure waste of resources especially since they will be wiped out within the next 48 months at maximum...
These top 10’s are scrapping the barrel. Do better.
