I was stationed on Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan back in '09 doing detainee ops with the USN. Every other day, I would run the 8 mile perimeter road during my time off. I remember this one time running the road in a fairly quiet section of the base, focusing on not stepping into the uncleared mine field areas they have all round the base.
It was a sunny day with ambient nature noises in the back ground. Suddenly--just like a scene out of a movie--I hear this WHOOSHHH and I look up and see directly over my head was an AH-64 flying some type of pattern over the base. It had to be about 300-500 feet overhead. I stopped in my tracks to look at it and thought to my self "I feel sorry for the poor SOBs who gets caught at the receiving end of one of those." They won't even hear them coming until its too late😂

I live in Raleigh, NC. There's a National Guard Apache unit at our airport and I've lived close to the airport for 10 years now. I still often rush outside to spot them flying over my house. Never gets old.

I love this guys honesty. I work with a ex Apache pilot now flys hems. Very good pilots. Multitasking is no problem for them. People don’t seem to understand how difficult it is to understand the symbology and Charlie mike at the same time. With the green monster. I think the echo model is transitioning to a f-35 visor display so it will help. Also 3200 helicopter hours is a lot. 3200 hours in a plane isn’t that much. Helicopters move 120kts or 100kts avg so any dual rated pilots as myself. I do crop dusting in fixed wing and my passion which is helicopters. And fixed wing ive been doing since I was a child with my parents and grand parents both. But helicopters are different animals. People think you can just land and take off. That’s not the case. To be safe we still need to have an approach and departure. I can land with a tail wind in a plane I’ve did it on accident at night and I quickly can see in my decent and the airframe can handle it. Doing a down wind Landing in a helo can be fatal quickly. LTE and couple of other things.

Great episode! Took me right back to my very first "sim" experience: "Gunship" by Microprose on the Commodore 64. :) I played the hell out of that as a kid, and the Apache has always been my favorite helicopter ever since. And, of course, Jane's "Longbow" and especially "Longbow 2" were fantastic sims that I miss a lot.
BTW, Jello, if you are reading this, I would love to hear your thoughts on the recent DARPA tests where an AI allegedly beat a human fighter pilot in simulated ACM five times. Would be a good topic for a podcast "special". ;)

So the human pilot was more of a restricted "sparring partner" to help develop the AI in a scripted environment, rather than the "Kasparov vs. Deep Blue" type scenario outlined in the more click-baity mainstream news articles. The was an interview on the radio here in the UK about this, I cannot remember the time or date sorry. The AI expert basically said, looking at the info he has seen. They cannot rule out the AI may of also learn some of the quirks in the computer system “simulator” and could also be taking advantage of those programming gaps/glitches that the human pilot would not of been able to. Almost like a human PC game player learns how to take advantage of the finer points of a game that a casual player doesn’t.

There are three vehicles that the army is looking at which fly much faster than the Apache. However, their ceiling is about 10,000 feet above sea level so places with high mountains is a no go for them. Their might be other factors such as cost, maintenance time, survivability and the number of mechanical and software problems that could doom a current replacement.

Late response but all services have flight suits and don't wear normal uniforms because pilots are in danger of burns. Army pilots are given two-piece flight suits that are meant to make them look like normal soldiers because some general didn't want pilots to think they were special.

44:27 Jugroom Fort is basically Hollywood came to the British Army. A pair of Apache's are supporting an attack on the Taliban held fort of Jugroom. After the ground forces withdraw they discover that one of their guys is missing. The Apache's search with their cameras and Locate L.Cpl Mathew Ford down in the entrance to the fort. A ground assault to recover him was sure to be a blood bath. So the Apache's collect 4 volunteers and fly them in to the fort to rescue L.Cpl Ford. Before the rescue another pair of Apache's arrive on station to provide support. The original Apache's fly the rescue party in and in the end one of the front seaters leaves the aircraft to rescue the downed soldier. They end up strapping him to the aircraft and flying him out. After dropping the rescuer's off they recover to Camp Bastion. On the recovery they discover one of the supporting Apache's went "Winchester" supporting them. Sadly Lance Corporal Ford died of his injuries.

He said he talked to the test pilots of the rah-66 Comanche and that was one bad ass bird. You could fly 90kts side ways. He actually decided to stay in the army hoping he would get to fly the Comanche. It’s actually a badass helicopter that would have advanced aviation by several years sadly they cancelled it and stopped the development so we’ve lost a lot of technology they put back on the shelf.
