I don't understand everyone's obsession with making ipadOS exactly like MacOS. That would be a horrible experience, in my opinion. The ipad is meant to be a hybrid device. MacOS is better suited for strictly desktops. I stopped using macbooks 5 years ago and haven't looked back. 80% of my usage is for work, productivity, and yes even content creation. The other 20% is for R&R. I love that I can go from writing a video script with a keyboard to using it as a tablet creating a thumbnail with the apple pencil. It's current multitasking capabilities are more than enough for my needs Even when I was using a galaxy tab s8+ with Dex I rarley ever needed to go back and forth between more than 2 or 3 apps at a time. Also people don't give the ipad enough credit for running full fledge logic pro and a solid tablet version of final cut. And even a solid version of Photoshop for creating thumbnails. With an ipad I can replace my entire workflow on a tab s8+ I can't. And I think your better off comparing the ipad to other tablets in the market than comparing it to a macbook.
This has been my thinking for several years now. I like MacOS on big screens, multiple displays. The IPad is a more focused based device. Which I love about it. I have a desktop Mac and the IPad Pro for portable computing.
I agree with you, but sometimes when you plug in a monitor and mouse, it's just an awful experience, so it feels crippled. But also considering they had 4 years to fix it now and it's still awful, you can't minimise a video export (seriously?), file management is god awful with it showing 100GB free but not being able to export a 2GB video for god knows why, multi tasking is awful with different apps behaving in a different way as you try to resize them (some don't resize at all) - it's just a hodgepodge of problems that seem impossible to solve without starting over. On a Mac at least you can switch between normal window management and stage manager.
my thoughts exactly! like i sold my macbook for the mac mini and i have macOS solely as a desktop. MacOS on an ipad is the dumbest idea ever, first of all developers would completly stop making apps for the ipad and we be stuck with unoptimized versions of apps that arent even on the mac app store. if devs can't be trusted to make MacOS apps for the app store for MAC why the hell would they do it for ipad?
Because iPad OS doesn't make sense anymore. It's a separate ecosystem from iOS and MacOS with very few apps that are cross compatible between them. On top of that, they are squeezing more and more advanced hardware into a device that can't take advantage of the extra power.
I’ve been using the 11 inch since launch. I love it. One thing I hate and a potential deal breaker to some is that iPad OS still doesn’t allow you to play multiple media at once (with sound). I used to watch TH-cam videos while watching a football game in the same screen on my Tab S9. Frustrates me how iPad OS does not allow two sounds simultaneously
I recall on earlier ipad OS versions there was a workaround to this if using a browser video with two windows open to be able to play audio and pressing pause and rollback after opening another app with video. You hit the nail on the head, if only ipad os had an equivalent to Samsung's sound assistant app to complete the multitasking functionality that the Tabs offer
No doubt about the OS, but what I will say is I don't think Apple ever wants to make this a full blow computer. In defense of the OS, if your like me using for a salesman carry, it's close to perfect. I tend to switch between split/slide over view and Stage Manager depending on situation. If I want to make a note or check things off a numbers sheet I tun it on its side with the MKB on and it's comfortable and secure. Very use specific device for sure. Obviously a great device to kick back with and travel with. Cheers mark!
No doubt about it! You’re right. It is an awesome device to kick back with and travel with. Been doing it nearly for two months now and it really is amazing. I think I’m just speaking on behalf of those who were a little disappointed with iPadOS18 and wish it was… better than 17 haha. Thanks for tuning in!
It’s also great as a tablet. If you do tablet work: drawing, taking notes, editing photos in photoshop with a pen, annotations, reading, watching tv and videos, and playing mobile games - it’s the best tablet out there. It’s similarly priced to the Samsung OLED tablet, and outperforms it for tablet work for sure. A lot of people want it to replace MacBooks, and that’s justified because apple has a weird lineup lol. They have cheaper LCD airs, even cheaper iPads, a mini, and a pro… and they all have the same purpose… but then again, each provides a different quality of life usage… and that’s great too, having an iPad that’s not too different in performance for all budgets making it accessible. You want a kindle replacement? There’s the mini. You want a cheap tab for your kid to play Roblox on? You have the base iPad 10. You want a cheaper Pro that sacrifices on the display for undergrads and high schoolers? You have the air. You like the air but wish for a better display for content consumption and creative reference? You have the pro.
When Apple put out the iPhone 15 Pro and M3 family chips, they wanted a 3nm SoC. TSMC didn't have their N3E process node online yet, so they created N3B specifically for Apple, but it result in more complicated manufacturing with low yields thus making N3B SoCs much more expensive. Now that N3E is out (and on TSMC's 3nm roadmap), Apple is using M4 and A18 in _all_ their products so they can retire any SoCs made on the N3B node. This will allow TSMC to retire the N3B process nodes which are only being used for Apple devices. The performance cores in M4 are probably one of the fastest CPUs out there, and for average non-multithreaded consumer workloads, single core performance is the real determining factor for a computer's _snappiness._ Resource intensive tasks are often multithreaded like video transcodes, video or audio editing, or 3-D graphics design, but consumers rarely engage in such activities.
I have the 1tb 11inch m4 also, my only con would be the speakers tbh. I feel like they’re not loud enough. I traded in my M1 Max mbp for this iPad and don’t regret it one bit since I mainly use it for video watching, doing web research, trading and that’s about it. Didn’t need a mbp since it’s bigger and heavier to carry/travel with so overall I’m happy with my purchase just wish the speakers were louder is all
Definitely feel that. The MBP speakers are next level. But I didn’t find the speakers on this 11” all that bad. Good move on switching to iPad if that’s all you’re doing.

I am fascinated by the YT collective when they review the iPad Pro, with their need to compare it with a laptop. Why are they not comparing it with a smartphone or...a toaster? I have seen hundreds of Galaxy Tab reviews, and not one compares the latest Galaxy Tab S with a Windows laptop! So, what is this weird obsession? It is for 1/ Clickbait; denigrating an Apple product makes the non-Apple audience pop in and flex. 2/ Apple does not sponsor, so they can do strange comparisons. Yet Samsung is the gift that keeps giving, so be nice to them. 3/ Creators, despite the obvious fact that the iPad runs a tablet OS, it is not a desktop OS. They need help understanding, despite Apple consistently saying iPadOS will never replace/run macOS/port macOS apps. Every year, the same agenda is repeated despite its foolishness.🤨 I have no problem with complaints about improving iPadOS, and it does need some extra finesse. However, the Files app is unlikely to change due to sandboxed apps, and add-on modules are unlikely to change for the same reason. As for the M4 being overkill, I understand that the M4 was the first M-chip to have a TandemOLED co-processor/driver, so the M3 would not have been able to power the OLED. With Macs getting OLED next year, pushing out the TandemOLED chip was essential so they could improve on it for the OLED Macbooks. So, the iPad Pro is the best tablet out there. It is costly, and value-wise, it is for a niche market. I see it as Apple does, as a complimentary device to a laptop, but an iPad 10 or Air offer better value alternatives.
Simple Answer which I think you're over-thinking into conspiracy or melodrama-online territory: 1. Price of iPad Pros is comparable to Laptops so for many people's budget's it's EITHER/OR = Comparison with Laptop is not just natural due to Budget decision aka PRICE : PERFORMANCE : PRACTICALITY. Put it another way: People will ask themselves: "Can I get just 1 device instead of spending X2 Price on 2 Devices which means given the extra features on iPads, can my iPad be used as a laptop? - not can my laptop be used as an iPad!" Fairly simple, really. 2. For a lot of people the iPad can probably do 80-90% or even more of all their computing needs WHILE extending possible usability and enjoyment of use with multi-modality options = Pointer/Type + Touch/Write (and shortly with more AI Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT integration Voice input too or iPadOS-18 Accessibility features). Again just on first appearances: iPad = M4 which is in fact a higher M-Series chip than any other Apple product currently (if not the most powerful): So why would people not compare that to Laptops running M3? It just makes sense just hearing the headlines about the device let alone the details. Finally, you're ignoring the convergence acceleration of tablets hardware with laptop hardware and the inevitable visual comparison when you dock the iPad with the Magic Keyboard, it even LOOKS like a Laptop. This is going to be a more and more relevant question to generations of kids who grew up using iOS and iPadOS at school or university even and wonder if they can still get away with using an iPad as both personal device and work machine for whatever work they're starting now: Being accustomed to both Apple and iOS more than PC or MacOS it's natural for them to want their iPads to "do the job" as they transition into the work-force. These videos must naturally cater to that ever on-going trend? Using Occam's Razor we can surely say your speculations are needlessly complicated in contrast to the observable phenomena? Hence why so many videos especially at the given price (eg Price : Performance : Practicality) of iPad Pro M4s let alone this was already the case with the M1 back in 2021. Certainly the conclusion is still, for a variety of users iPadOS is too restrictive and limited and hence it's not worth buying the top-end iPad Pro M4 at the price point if Laptop or iPad is on one's mind. Better to go for the cheapest Tablet such as the 10th Gen or even 9th Gen for $200 and buy a suitable laptop with the savings. Again even your own conclusion of this device is: " It is costly, and value-wise, it is for a niche market." This iPad Pro 2024 could never have been made without the M4 Chip for at least three reasons: 1. The M3 was not able to drive this dual layer display. 2. Nope. Much shorter battery life. No more usefull keyboard available from Tim Cook’s Apple. Don’t buy it. You’ll regret it.
