My wife - a non-whisky drinker - was offered a dram of Glen Moray as “a whisky with training wheels”. A very accessible, mild whisky that will allow her to join our whisky tasting gathering without being alienated by turning to wine. Your breakdown is exactly spot-on to what we discovered. Thanks, Ralfy!

Thanks for revisiting this bottle. Glen Moray is the least pretentious, often the least expensive, crowd pleasing Single Malt on the shelves ✌️

    I really enjoyed your video.
I remember trying Glen Moray in the end of the eighties from my dad's bar. Legally I was allowed to drink whisky and the Glen Moray whisky was mild and smooth and I was not shocked by the taste and the palate. My whisky journey started there and I am still enjoying a dram of Glen Moray from time to time. Keeping on rocking Ralfy.

Unpretentious, no vacuous marketing, but a useful vehicle and not expensive - much to commend it in the context of what it sets out to be, no more an no less. 🤷‍♂️ Another insightful review, thanks Ralfy.

My former employer in retail liquor had an exclusive distribution arrangement with this label, and we were encouraged to promote this expression vigorously. . After attending a tasting session with the distiller who was touring Australia to sell it, I became surprised how good & cheap it actually was.. This expression punches way, way above its price.

Today was a great whisky day: Spent afternoon at the Milano Whisky Festival and tasted my first Daftmill, which took me an hour to drink and was excellent. Then two IBs (good and curious)and then I spent the last two hours talking with Antonia and Connal from Ardnamurchan. I tried three of them and walked away with two bottles which were fairly priced. The peated cask strength AD 09/22 and the Sherry cask at 50%. Such warm people that I felt we had been friends forever. 2 additional excellent Adelphi IB cask strength drams I took home to finish, making today a great whisky day. Never tried this Glen Moray but will keep an eye out for it. Thanks dear Ralfy. Kindest regards, S.

I went to the Glen Moray distillery some years ago, that was a lovely experience! They had three distillery exclusives up for tasting, cask strength and matured on interesting casks. Incredibly fun whiskies, the one that stood out to me was a peated sauternes finish (starting very sweet and ending very smoky). Still regretting not picking up a bottle when I was there.

This is the thing you can find reasonably priced whiskys like this that are easy drinking but nice. Much better than the typical blended whiskys that you'll find on offer this time of year like the Famous grouse which is awful stuff.

Some of their older bottles are really decent stuff. Back before covid I could get their 15 for $47. Today after almost four years of inflation it’s priced beyond its flavor profile.

Huge fan of this Whisky and lovely distillery. The 15 yr I picked up from the distillery was non chill filtered for £43 and was delicious, but sadly its not online like this. It just reminded me of homemade Christmas pudding, amazing stuff and lovely tour topped off our visit 2yrs ago.

Adding Glen Moray and Glen Keith to the list 👍

I really enjoyed visiting Glen Moray, lovely welcoming staff there too. I tried their new make and it's remarkably good, lots of malty flavours and fruity notes, no wonder it does well in so many cask types, soft at first impression but with hidden depths.
I do think the distillery is very much slept on by a lot of whisky enthusiasts too, their cask strength Warehouse 1 releases, distillery handfills for very good prices in interesting casks and their single cask peated handfills have a big hit of smoky flavour. Their spirit has an oiliness to it as well that you only really notice at a higher abv.
A peated port cask finish I bought as a distillery exclusive was very good, another favourite was a 16 year old that had been 8 years in a Chenin Blanc cask and then 8 years in a Chardonnay cask. By no means bland in any way, love their cask strength expressions.
    Firmly a fan here.

Move onto their age statement Heritage range or the Warehouse1 range and you will see just how beautiful Glen Moray can be. I have been a fan of GM for nearly 20 years and my staple is the 15yr old Heritage, this us superb in every way. I have tried every one in the Heritage range and ALL of them are excellent but my biggest treat was the 13yr old Curiosity madeira cask, this just blew me away.

I've not been drinking much whisky the past few years, most of what I've been drinking been beer, but I picked up a bottle of the 12 y/o Glen Moray yesterday, and am thoroughly enjoying it. Here in New Zealand it's the cheapest age statement single malt you can get, and at that price point you can't complain if it's a bit safe. Can't comment on this NAS Glen Moray mind, as I've not had it, but I did have one of their wine finished bottlings some years ago and also liked it for what it was. I reckon if for whatever reason you need a safe and easy going scotch you can't do much better than a Glen Moray, the spirit is competently made, the maturation is solid, and the price is right.

  • @torbjornkarlsen
    @torbjornkarlsen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I've never had the NAS 40%, but can I just say I'm really enjoying my 12 year old travel exclusive 48% ABV Glen Moray. Absurd value as it is a 1 litre bottle for £36 in duty free in Norway.

I still enjoy GM and noticed it's power with new or non-whisky drinkers, especially those that do Canadian Whisky, mid to cheap rum, and vodka. It's a great "here I'll prove it that scotch is actually good." So many I know only experienced things like JW red.

Thank you for this review. The GM 12 and 10 Chardonnay Cask (which you reviewed 10 years ago also) were my first SMS. I have all releases available in the US in my collection. As you have taught us our palate will change and mature as our whisky journey continues and I find most of their expressions too light and uninteresting now. The exception by far is the 18 which is NCF 47% and according to the company uncolored. A lovely first fill bourbon cask expression. Their specialty releases are wonderful and interesting but not sold in the States. They have the Classic, 12 and 15 NCF and at 48% in the Travel Retail. (I would love to try them!). Their inde Products are sometimes excellent. Especially SMWS and Douglas Laing. Sorry to have gone on so long! Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Very well said review! I love this distillery because it’s very affordable and I can sip it without being distracted by it, I don’t have to think about evolving flavor notes or high proof mouth punches. It just goes down as easy as Sunday morning. Great easy sipper for no occasion occasions 😆 Cheers 🥃

I really like their warehouse 1 range. Its generally: cask strength, natural colour and non chill filtered. The manzanilla is really good but the Barollo which is is if I remember; 16 years in bourbon then a 4 year, ''finish'' in Barollo(sic). Great stuff at good prices....hang on....I bought a second bottle of the Barolo and just dug it out. Distilled in '98, 3 casks and bottled in 2021. All natural at 52.9% I bought this last year after being so impressed. The only one I didn't try was the Japanese wood. Not tried the new warehouse 1 selection as they seem to be finished a bit too much.

Love Glen Moray. Their handfills from the distillery are possibly the best value handfills out there at the moment. They also have the Warehouse 1 range, cask strength, natural presentation for the whisky geeks :-). The Warehouse 1 Manzanilla they did a few years ago I really enjoyed.

Currently savoring the very last hefty dram I've poured of your Glenallachie 2009 Single Cask pick. I've told people left and right that I don't go crazy for sherry forward whisky, but this one just nails it. Hopeful that you do something like this again. Our palates usually agree, but in the case of this barrel it truly is something special and I hope you feel proud of picking this one out! Cheers from San Francisco

Good on you for reviewing this Ralfy! I buy maybe 1 or 2 bottles a year of this or the 12 Yr old. Good solid well made whisky priced between $50.00 and $65.00 AUD. Also the Aldi Highland Black 8 Yr blend is solid $42.00 AUD. I don't buy Glenfiddich 12 anymore as it ranges in price between $78.00 and $110.00 aud in Australia now depending on retailers and discounts offered. JW Red tastes like bad vodka. JW Black tastes like bad vodka with some sort of artificial high fructose corn syrup added. Chivas Regal is not what is was and either is Dimple. Just my opinion but think there is less single malt and more grain being added. Ballantine's is still good but J&B is pretty bad now. Just my opinion. Adam.

The standard expressions are well made, if somewhat pedestrian for the experienced malt drinker.
However, older, higher ABV, Glen Morays are unfailingly special which gives one an indication how good the spirit is and what can be, if it is given attention.
There is a skill in being able to consistently make something that appeals to the average whisky drinker. Which, I am sure most of us start out as.

I usually buy a bottle of Glen Moray perhaps every eighth bottle and have tried the peated, the heavy charred and various others. A decent low cost unpretentious whisky. A friend put a black label in front of me last week as we both used to work for DCL. It was very, very bad. All down hill for Walkers since they shut Hill Street.

Although I've seen plenty of Glen Moray in my local ABC stores, I've never gotten one. I should. I've only been taking whisk(e)y seriously for almost 3 years and still consider myself new to it, but I do think this might be a candidate for intro single malts along the likes of GF12, GM10, GL12. So this may find a place in my collection. As Ralfy alluded to, I'd prefer to try this than a JW Black. At this point, I'd probably opt for Jura 10 over any JW.

Fun review. On JW Black, I noticed that when the 1.75 L went from a bottle with a handle to one without a handle, there was a big downturn in quality. I had an open Bowmore 15 year old and added some to it and it transformed into something that I would enjoy on a weekday when I don't really want to dissect smell and taste as if I was writing a review. Once in a while, those big JWB bottles go on sale for less than $60 and it's too hard to resist.

Now that the UK is out of the EU, why can't the SWA mandate 42.8% (75 proof) and 750 ml as the minimum strength and volume of Scotch whisky? Those were the original values pre-Brexit. The EU values were based on their valuations across the channel and gave the UK distilleries a chance for a kill. If really sought for, the SWA can easily decree otherwise. OK, it is more profitable at 40% ABV and 700 ml, but shouldn't customer preference have some value. They bow to US rules and their whiskies are 43% 750 ml. Asia, mainly India, insists on 43%/750 ml imports and the SWA- read FM Bureaucrats- is backing out and won't equate Asia at par with the USA. Patronising !

I have tried 12yo and like it, for the price is very good balanced flavour not rich but OK, maybe the best from mainstream .... Glenfiddich - this is totally overated, for me - garbage.

I didn't even like the Glen Moray 15. Very harsh aftertaste, unpleasantly bitter, lots of fourth and fifth fill soulless casks.

Can't be the same 15 as I've been drinking as my tastes sublime as it's always done since it's inception

Glen Moray is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE whisky.
If you want a whisky that is dirt cheap and will get you pickled, buy this poor excuse of a whisky.
Glen Moray.... Do BETTER. MUCH BETTER.

Sadly true. And it wouldn’t take much effort to improve it to the level of passable. But they won’t take it there. They’ve found their entry level sipper.

I disagree. This whiskey is weak and wanting. It's a real piece of garbage. I've bought this crap at 30 years old and its a very weak irish whiskey. Stay away. If you like water........this is your malt. Bugger me!
