The Dumb Brute is a more combat-focused variant of the Blob (which was a damage-sponge with utility skills) from the ancient Space Gamer article "The Flinger & the Blob."
@@jimmurphy1591 Do the new version of the rules still make bommerangs the best thrown weapon in the game? 'Cause that was the other half of that old article. The Flinger was all about standing behind his Blob pal and killing things with boomerangs, of all things - or maybe handfuls of shuriken if the target was lightly armored. So much cheddar. I hope they nerfed that silly concept. :)
Thanks for showing this off, Jim. I missed out on the Kickstarter due to a lack of funds at the time but I was really curious to see the product before I went and bought it myself as well. Personally, I'd happily allow the Brute. If he gets to be a bit too much, nothing a little mind control can't fix. ;)
Haven’t been feeling well and your videos have been a great entertaining way to pass the time...RE-watched several of my fav Game Methuselah videos. This one was great. Thanks!
Thank you..... I am embarrassed to say this but I did the Kick-starter for the Legacy Addition SOLELY because you made it sound cool. I haven't read through much of it yet, just the rules for Melee and Wizard. I have to say the Labyrinth came with that newly printed book smell that is sooo intoxicating.
God bless you for making a David Carradine monk! Also, great build suggestions. My loyal DND group is excited to start a full blown campaign with me! Looking forward to the brutal combats and tension created by them!
Thanks for the video Jim! Your comment about the Toughness talent alerted me to an error on a character I'm currently playing. I shared your video to a TFT channel on Discord as well.
Thanks for the video - Had I been aware of this Kickstarter, I would've gone for the "I want it all" package... I still have my original Fantasy Trip plastic sets (somewhere).
Great video Jim. Can’t wait for this to arrive in the UK. I love the way they’ve emphasised the “game” aspect of TFT in this Kickstarter, with lots of cool counters, cards and hexes. Apparently, there’s another KS coming up called “Decks of Destiny” with loads more cards.
I've been hoping for someone Champion GURPS on TH-cam the way Seth Skorkowsky does CoC and Jon does AD&D. But I'll take Jim Murphy and The Fantasy Trip. Definitely a win for SJGs.
Maybe... I never played This system. But now intrigued. Went to web site and now interested in seeing it. I’m going to look at getting the the games and some backgrounds. Fantasy, SciFi, old West, all interesting
Different Steve Jackson; there are actually two! “Warlock of Firetop Mountain” is by the _British_ Steve Jackson, another creative giant and Good Friend of Gaming! 🙂
lol, I am watching the part you show the little character sheet and am thinking "I been using index cards to put all my characters on for years. @@jimmurphy1591 "Muddy fantasy trip" makes me laugh. I just asked cause my friend loves it and I only played it a few times. So I figured since both Steve Jackson games they would have similarities.
I remember when Melee, Wizard, and Death Test were in little, plastic bags. Ahh, the good ol’ days! Thank you for spreading the “good news” of TFT to a new generation. Now let me spread the news of your video. Here’s a link to my post on the Steve Jackson Games forums: Video About TFT Legacy Edition by “Game Methuselah” Jim Murphy forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=162729 It’s the least I could do to thank you for your consistently top-notch content. : )
I had those versions as Well. The productiin values on these are head and shoulders above it, yet the Melee and Wizard boxes aren't much more expensive in inflation adjusted prices. They are both $14.95. Melee original price of $2.99 is $12.47 and Wizard's $3.99 is $16.64. The new Liz Danforth art thick, die cut counters alone justify the difference on Melee.
@@jimmurphy1591 Indeed it is. Really, all you need is one book and some dice. Everything else you can create. I spent more taking my wife to see Bohemian Rhapsody last year than the minimal TFF setup I described would cost and that is more than you to start with something like LabLord. Yet, after a couple of hours the movie was used up. That's shorter than a game session. BTW, you have become my favorite RPG channel if for no other reason than it is fun to hear someone who remembers some of the things I do talk about them. Even better when it is someone who wasn't a kid so saw more than I did.
Jim Murphy - Yes, I really wish I was that young again! Everything was new and exciting as I expanded from playing Avalon Hill and SPI war games to start enjoying pen & paper RPGs. Thankfully, gaming has kept me “young at heart” even though my body has insisted on following the calendar. I’m glad I lived long enough to see Steve Jackson finally acquire the rights to his masterpiece and bring it back home where it belongs. I’m looking forward to any advice, experiences, playthroughs, or live sessions of The Fantasy Trip that you can share with us. Game on!
I can't believe someone used this game (as a precursor to GURPS) to say that Jacksnon's system came out before Champions. This seems far closer to Warhammer 40k than the HERO system. Does if feel more like a squad-level war game than a role-playing game?
if i run a “heavy duty scenario that’s likely to result in a (pc) fatality, and healing failed, i’ve had the player create several (npc) and i take them to allow the player to replace the dead (pc) with one of them (entering the group as a(npc) who than integrates into the group as a (pc)
The Fantasy Trip was so much better than the complete mess that Dungeons and Dragons has become. Wizard was the best magic system that I have ever seen.
I agree, but D&D is stuck with building on and fixing an early 70’s design. But it has the advantage of being the first and best known. It has lots of loyalty from old gamers like me.
Sounds like an awesome game. Seems that a game is only really as good as what you make of it, and a game's quality is best determined by how much it enables you to take the system and run with it. In any event, thanks for the introduction and for the video
@@DaveScurlock it is a great game. I pretty much played old copies to death and might have scavenged some this century. The KS was a great thing for me. Melee is avaible cheap if you want to give it a spin.
Just to fanboy one bit more, here is the website: thefantasytrip.game The small games are available separately and are very high quality. If you want both Melee and Wizard in a more retro format they are also available in a pocket box with both games. Don't be scared by the $119 box. You can get everything you need with the Pocket box and the In The Labyrinth book. You'd need to make your own hex maps and other goodies, but it would be all you need to play.
Is Rope still a creation spell? The original rules a creation spell must be cast in a unoccupied hex. So rope is sort of a trap spell. Not that great in combat.
Jim, you're my absolute favourite gaming personality on TH-cam. Thanks for giving us these great videos on a regular basis. Lucky to have you here.

Ah Melee my favorite Melee dueling build is ST13 DX11 morning star small shield. My first wizard character was ST8 DX16 IQ8. Good memories. Thanks!
