    I would have loved to hear someone at CGC personally address newton rings. Ive pretty much given up buying graded books because every other book I receive is going to cost me a lot of money and time to get reholdered so I can actually see and enjoy the book.

      CaptainSauce we talked about it and they are fully aware but apparently correcting it is a far bigger deal then we think it is. They sound like they are actively trying to figure it out.

    In my opinion; How to improve your chances of better CGC grades for your comic books.
    Learn how to clean your comic books as needed.
    Learn how to use humidity to prepare your comic books for pressing.
    Learn how to press your comic books.
    Learn how to package your comic books for shipping to CGC. Suggestions;
    Use plenty of new backing boards, new comic bags, magazine bags to bundle multiple
    bagged and boarded comic books together, blue painters tape, use larger cardboard,
    bubble wrap or foam peanuts, sturdy shipping box, etc.Good luck and geek responsibly.

    Also it would be interesting test just how consistent they are. Take some older book in lower grade and submit multiple times (let’s say 5). Each time it is resubmitted raw (would involve cracking it and wasting a lot of money). Be interesting to see how consistent they really are

      William Wilson I was curious as well about this that was a topic we discussed. They drew a hardline on this and it appears for the time being that it isn’t anything they will ever be doing. For them it isn’t worth taking the risk of a forgery potentially sneaking by.

    • @undead797
      @undead797 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not a risk for CBCS because they basically work with Beckett to verify signatures and Beckett has been verifying signatures for years. Sure it would be a little risky for CGC to start doing that but it's not like it's impossible. They just don't want to compete with Beckett's signature authentication process. CBCS lays out CGC flat on that one. I wouldn't even send my signed books to CGC if they had that option. Beckett is one of the most prestigious companies when it comes to authentication and grading.

    • @artboston4787
      @artboston4787 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They half ass do that by placing the name on the label which means they think it's authentic. If they don't think the signature is authentic then they'll note name written on whatever page in pen or marker.

    Is there ever the possibility that CGC will ever have a service like CBCS where they authenticate signatures that are not witnessed by a CGC witness? And also my favorite CGC slab is one that I got signed at Knoxville FanExpo in 2018 where I met my favorite Star Wars character, the one the only Boba Fett aka Jeremy Bulloch and got him to sign my Star Wars 68 the beautiful yellow Gene Day cover! Luckily I was able to get a witness and have it graded at a wonderful 8.0!! So happy about that, by far my favorite slab!

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Kelsey that would be awesome but I asked the same question about sig authentication. They seem pretty stern on not doing it and they said it was because they don’t ever want to run the risk of falsely identifying a signature. Take that for what it’s worth.

    I found out the hard way that slabs are not waterproof.
    I had a slab laying on it's back in my basement on a shelf where I stored my collection, and a water pipe nearby sprung a tiny-tiny leak that sprayed a tiny stream 10ft across the room hitting the end of my slab and the water penetrated the case and inner well.

    One question I have is the numbering. Guess the same with money has numbers to be sure it is a real one. CGC keeps a record of the number for authentication, right? so if someone cracks a slab and presses it, and get a new number or the same number?

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elephant In The Room Sahib good question. If you crack the book out yourself and don’t send in the label with it then absolutely it will get a serial number. If CGC cracks out the book, presses it and then grades it that may be a different story. Going to try to remember to ask when I see them at a con in a couple of weeks.

      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Palochik a digital copy of your book would be really cool. A lot of books you can find online but there are still so many missing. In theory you can get you book graded, crack it out(carefully) and just keep the label with the book. If you ever really just wanted an assigned grade to it. .

    -Printing defects that get a pass because they all have them

    I'm usually worried about counterfeit cgc's, if that's a big problem and how to spot them.

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sal Felix I find the best way is to start with the holder. In my experience it usually begins there. If corners look as if they were cracked, edges glued, sides tampered with, etc... I have found multiple tampered books in the past but once you really examine the holder, inner well and label you should be able to deduce if anything has been tampered with. Don’t be afraid to really examine it if you have concerns.

    • @Sal_comics
      @Sal_comics 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goldenageguru Thanks that's good advice. I've seen photos online of tampered cases. I was also worried about the labels themselves when they become faded especially on the older cgc's. To me it looked like someone bought a new case, printed a label off their inkjet printer and then slipped it in, but I read that the ink on older labels can develop a washed out look so I shouldn't worry too much.

    Thank you gentlemen for this video. I’d like to chime in about the micro chamber paper, or acid free paper.
    Anyone can buy these papers at an art store, in pads of various sizes at a good price. These papers will help slow down acid degregation, but will not remove tanning, or yellowing of paper - CGC will not tell you where to get it ( like it’s only available to them, I have seen them address this on their boards in the past ).
    As for safe keeping from bugs, light, and oxidation of comic books, the best way to store them is in a pine box, or pine drawers. I have many conic books from over 30 years old stored this way in pine drawers without any bags, and boards, and there is no yellowing, smell, oxidation of any kind. The pages, and staples are just like they came off the press, and no one is talking about this way of storage. Granted it is not cheap, but either is buying acid-free bags, and boards, and boxes for all our comic books. You can feel d great deals at yard, and garage sales.

    I think CGC is a fairly reputable and professional company, but I feel like they hustle you on the shipping costs. I dropped off a bunch of books at SDCC, and they could've easily grouped more of the books together, but instead they separated all of my books into 8 shipments. Yesterday, I received the 1st shipment. The actual cost of shipping was $16.60 but I was charged $34. I know the packing materials aren't free, but they charge a separate $5 fee for handing, so I was over-charged $18. CGC should credit me that amount, but I know they won't . I assume they're also going to profit from all of my other 7 shipments, and I feel this is unfair, dare I say unethical.

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sergio Reyes that shipping ads up quick, especially since everything has to come back insured. You really need to stack up your tier invoices as much as possible to feel a little better about shipping. I would call them if I were you. They are usually pretty easy to get a hold of. Hope you get some money backer a satisfying explanation.

      Bilbo Howzr those slabs are not meant to protect against light. I would go in assuming zero. Someone did comment that there are UV sleeves for slabs available. Also important to know is that handle hole in your short/long box let’s light in and I have seen the front books damaged with an oval shape on the covers because the box was being hit with direct sunlight. Throw a piece of cardboard in the box between the book and the handle to prevent that from happening.

I remember hearing this from a rep but never did it. jeff hernandez we asked the question about Newton Rings as well. They are obviously aware of the problem and they are trying to fix it. It doesn’t appear to be an easy solution and until there is a new holder redesign I wouldn’t expect there to be 100% correction to the problem.

      @@jasonrichards5661 I've had a lot of key books plagued with these Newton rings and it sucks. So my PC stuff I keep CBCS and stuff I sell I go the CGC route.

      Good Q. I only have that issue with a handful - but while usually (in my experience) its fairly unnoticeable - when it's bad its REALLY bad.

      Derek Whisenant asked about the newton ring and they are trying to figure out a solution but it appears that it is more complicated then it seems. Hopefully something soon come.

    Would that paper be needed if they made the capsules air tight? Why cant they 100% seal the comic books so that they ARE waterproof and completely cut off from outside elements?

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin Roberts paper needs to breath and if it is air tight there will be other issues such at staple and paper problems.

    Yet to have a graded book but I can appreciate the time and experience graders put into grading to the best of their ability. Science and Art is essentially objectivity and subjectivity, so.... grading high grade moderns is more objective capable versus older mid and low grade books where subjectivity begins to creep in, however, the experience of the grader helps to curb that subjectivity. Things to remember when getting books graded... says the guy who doesn't own a graded book lol. Maybe some day soon I'll win one 😃.

    Awesome video guys...me and my partner have set a target of 400 graded books...were up to about 230 at the moment...we make cgc haul and spec videos on our TH-cam channel(Kevin Taylor comics)where you can see lots of low census high grade comics...would like to know more about Neuton rings in the new slabs as the old ones didn’t suffer with these problems and CBSI slabs don’t...I know that Neuton rings don’t damage the integrity of the book they just make them look a bit weird but I would like to know if or why they changed the inner well and the reason for doing so...another really cool video guys...you rock😎👍

    • @goldenageguru
      @goldenageguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Taylor I asked about the Newton Ring and it’s definitely something they are aware of and trying to address, but for some reason it’s far more complicated then everyone thinks. Don’t know all the logistics but if it was an easy fix it probably would have been taken care of.
