Best Kayak Under $1000? Wilderness Systems Targa 100 Review

  • While there are lots of kayaks that cost less than $1000, there aren't a lot of high quality kayaks under $1000. In this video, I'm reviewing the new Wilderness Systems Targa 100 - a sit-on-top recreational kayak that boasts a variety of features, including a removable, integrated cooler. To test the boat, I took it on a full-day mission down the Current River in the Ozarks. It was a great opportunity to test the Targa 100 on a river with Class 1 rapids.

    I like these types of reviews because it helps for someone who doesn’t get the chance to try out multiple boats to understand what various features really do. Would love to see a review of the Tarpon 105 since I have that so I could get a sense of what other boats do differently. Love the videos !

    Hi Ken! I am surprised this didn’t make your Awards List. I bought it after watching your review a million times. I love it and I can actually fit it INSIDE my NISSAN PATHFINDER as long as I’m going by myself. No swamping….great seat….paddles well…stable enough. Can’t wait to get it out more often!

    I have a Perception Impulse 10 which is the same as the Joyride 10 except the Impulse has open tank wells front and rear. The front holds my binoculars along with a length of rope that is tucked under the bungee. I kayak in remote places so it gets dragged a lot. The rope is handy for tying off while it's on the water. Rope is important for rescues and having it readily accessible can greatly mitigate a bad situation. I had swamped the yak in a creek. Instead of using the grab handle to pull the boat out while I was trying to get out myself, I grabbed the rope, got myself ashore, then used the rope to pull it on shore. Much easier that way. A dry storage area can't do that without untying the rope every time. A rope helps feet from getting wet when exiting the yak. I use the rope every time I go out.

    I have a nit to pick. Who makes a cooler that’s going to be exposed to the sun with a black top? It seems totally wrong doesn’t it? The hull shape seems very well thought out though. Credit for that.

      That's a good point... and something that I didn't consider. It will be neat to see how it works on a super hot and sunny day. One thing it has going for it, is that the sides aren't exposed, which is a real bonus.

    Thanks for another awesome review, Ken. I would love to know how this compares to the Hurricane Skimmer 116 and the Eddyline Caribbean 12, both lighter, longer, and Thermoform SOTs. We would be paddling mostly in lakes and slow moving rivers with some chop (always windy in Thunder Bay, ON). Also, would be nice to hear in your reviews, how the kayaks paddle upstream too, as we usually start our river day trips going upstream first. We bought a tandem Aquaglide Chelan 155 last year as a starting point and find it a little slower than we would like. Looking at solo SOT kayaks now. I am 5’4” 130 lbs, my husband 5’11” at 190 lbs. Lighter kayaks important to us. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I am curious if the cat style back end will catch current as you pass? My neighbor has a kayak with similar wide rear end. As you try to maneuver out of current, it grabs the back end and you easily spin out, usually at the worst possible time.

    I think this is an excellent kayak. I myself bought a Lifetime Tamarack Pro. Similar kayak for half the price. I'm not knocking the Targa. Also most 10 foot yaks have a weight capacity of like 275 to 300 pounds. My son is a big lug, so I ended up buying a used 13 foot kayak with a 400lb capacity so I could convince him to go along with me.

    Hi Ken, I'm curious to know how you think the Targa 100 compares to the Tarpon 105 for a comfortable recreational boat?

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know... that's a tough call! Both are very much in the same 'class'. I like the suspended seat of the Targa 100, and the integrated cooler behind the seat is a nice bonus if it makes sense for you. That being said... the Phase 3 seat on the Tarpon is really nice too. I haven't tried the 'updated' Tarpon yet, and so I can't tell you how they paddle compared to each other, but I'm guessing they're very similar. Hard question, because they're so similar. Biggest question is probably what features resonate the most with you. Also... your size. You have the option to go bigger with the Tarpon 120, if you like a little more size and speed.

    what would you recommend as an all around for inner coastal ocean going but also good for swamp-ish and river areas? I'm 50, and generally just do day trips with friends. I'm not doing over nights. This boat is too small but I'm commenting here because its recently active. I used a friends old sit on top Tarpon 120 for a bay trip. The bay here is about 3-6 miles wide depending, and we got cause in some seas rough enough I had waves rolling almost up to my chest, and had no issues with control but it is a heavy thing, and would be hard to transport solo. I'm looking into trailers as well but wonder what you recommend for this environment. It can get windy, and you have a tide to fight so it needs to track. I feel more comfortable on the sit on top ones

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Due to those rough conditions that you can find yourself in, I think you have two options. 1. Sit-on-top. 2. Sit-inside touring kayak that uses a skirt.
      The challenge with sit-on-tops is that they are typically heavier than sit-inside touring kayaks, because they use more plastic. One way around this, is to get a SOT that is made by thermoforming instead of rotomolding (as most plastic kayaks are made). Thermorform kayaks are generally more expensive, but significantly lighter. For example - the Eddyline Caribbean 12 is roughly the same size as the Tarpon 120, but 45lb instead of 63lbs. That's a big difference! It's also $500 more....
      As for sit-inside touring kayaks that use a skirt, you can expect to give up a little stability vs SOT kayaks, and you have to be comfortable with being inside the kayak. The trade off is that they're lighter and higher performing (faster and more fun to paddle). For example, the Dagger Stratos 12.5 (Large) is 9 pounds lighter. www.dagger.com/us/kayaks/stratos-125-large. A thermoformed sit-inside is even lighter - like the Eddyline Rio, which is 35lbs! eddyline.com/collections/recreational/products/rio-lightweight-recreational-kayak.
      Hope this helps!

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing that I would mention to people is that the Pescador isn't nearly as comfortable as the Targa, because you're sitting directly on the kayak, with a small piece of foam between your butt and the boat. The suspension seat of the Targa is a real difference in comfort. Big cost difference though...
