Poor Charles Leclerc. He wanted #7. When drivers first gets to get their number, Kimi had wanted 6, but knew Nico Rosberg wanted it because it was both his father Keke and his wife's lucky number, so he pick #7. 4 years after Nico retired, Nicholas Latifi picked up #6.

Oliver Bearman replacing Carlos Sainz for the ´24 Saudi Arabia GP due to an appendicits. Now you got your number 38. Not permanent, but hey, you have to take what you get 😅
It only makes sense to give the constructors the car numbers. If you have a good year and finish 4th in the constructors I would be proud to have numbers 7 and 8 on my cars. Nothing like bragging rights that you can visualize.
Yup, I'm not a fan of permanent numbers. I guess I get why they did it (the driver keeps getting moved deeper into the car) but...put their frick'n name on the side like they used to. Nobody has enough sponsors (the reason for removing the names and shrinking the car numbers) these days anyway so what's the harm.
I quite like the idea of a modification to the 1973-95 system. Teams pick two consecutive numbers to use permanently, except they use 1 and 2 when they have the drivers' champion. No shuffling or anything: that way Ferrari can always be 27 and 28, Williams can always be 5 and 6 etc.
it all changed because Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR was so associated with his number 3 that he started making a shit ton of money on black #3 merch. F1 saw it and wanted a piece of that sweet merchandising action.
"What year is the only time 18 and 19 had been present since 2014?" --- My answer is 2017... And the numbers are owned by Lance Stroll (18) and Felipe Massa (19) at Williams!
You can thank Nico Rosberg (6) for that, he jumped ship from F1 after winning the title and Lance's intended teammate Bottas (77) then moved to fill the opening
Lol I see you overtook Autosport with your channel. Well done and fully deserved. Even with your current channel size I would argue you are still underrated.
I wonder, are drivers allowed to switch to another number once it expires after two full seasons? (Maybe depending on if their first pick wasn't available at the time?)
@@ravindrabastari9013 That doesn't quite hold up tho. Say you "retire" for more than 2 seasons, some rookie comes in and takes your number, and you rejoin formula 1. You now can't get your old number back and have to choose a new one.
@TheWeeaboo Neither the fact that Ricciardo is changing teams nor that he is lower in the Drivers' Championship make any difference. The rule is very simple (extract form the FIA 2019 Formula One Sporting Regulations, article 9.2): "Prior to the start of the 2014 World Championship season race numbers will be permanently allocated to drivers by ballot, such numbers must then be used by that driver during every Formula One World Championship Event he takes part in throughout his career in Formula 1. A driver’s career in Formula 1 will be deemed to have ended if he does not participate in an Event for two entire consecutive Championship seasons. Any new drivers, either at the start of or during a season, will also be allocated a permanent number in the same way. The only exception to this allocation process will be for the reigning World Champion who will have the option to use the number one. The number that was previously allocated to him will be reserved for him in subsequent seasons if he does not retain the title of World Champion." You choose a number and stay with it for your whole career, no matter what your favourite number is, what is better for your marketing, or whatever. There is some kind of a "loophole": If Max wants to change his number to 3, he needs to retire from Formula 1, convince Ricciardo to retire as well, wait until both numbers are avaliable, then convince some new driver to take number 33 while convincing every other new driver not to take number 3, so when he wants to be back he can't have his old number and would have to choose one that is not in use, then choose number 3. Nothing is impossible, so I will say this is very unlikely. Actually, I would bet $100 with anyone on that move not happening.
In Germany these numbers are called „Schnapszahlen“ (grm. Booze/schnaps numbers). that ist because in a dice game you have to take a shot everytime you make a number consists twice by the same numbre. Edit: @9:35
I grew up with the number system from 96 to 2013 and never questioned it. But when they introduced that permanent number for a drive I thought that was genious, putting an emphasys on the driver and their marketability!
Just wanted to bring a different system in because I thought some people might find it interesting. Indycar also has the system of last season's champion getting the privilege of #1, but all the other numbers are applied for and owned by the teams. and those numbers end up being part of a team's identity. So you'll see Andretti with 25,26,27,28 or Foyt with 14 and 41. Team Penske have always favored 2 or 3, so you'll see them using 2,3,12, and 22 a lot in their history. Rahal Letterman Racing have a quirky thing of their numbers being divisible by 3, after Bobby Rahal won the 500 wearing #3.
One Video that Chainbear makes has to go to Autosport, the rest comes here, Its part of a deal they have together. in turn autosport supports Chainbears channel.
It was 2017 with Felipe Massa driving the number 19 and Lance Strolls first season with the number 18. With the end of Massas career at the end of 2017, the first time it will become available will be 2020.
I know I'm a bit late to the party haha but I think it is because it was used as a third car for two consecutive years so drivers don't want to be associated with a third car when they're only 2 teammates.
What I want to know is, when they had "permanent" numbers from 1974 onwards, why didn't someone just say, we'll reserve 1 and 2 for the winning constructor and the following season reserve their old numbers for them to slot back in? Would've made so much more sense.
I was bored so I did a research to see how the 2021 grid would look like with the 74-95 numbering system: 1,2: Mercedes (or 0,2 in a wild case of Lewis retiring) 3,4: Red Bull 5,6: Williams 7,8: Alpine 9,10: Aston Martin 11,12: Alpha Tauri 14,15: Ferrari 16,17: Alfa Romeo 18,19: McLaren 20,21: Haas

Oliver Bearman replacing Carlos Sainz for the ´24 Saudi Arabia GP due to an appendicits. Now you got your number 38. Not permanent, but hey, you have to take what you get 😅
1:21 Did he just say that Baku is in Afghanistan?
can't wait for the review !! keep up the good work
WHY is 38 your favorite number, you can't just state that and then not explain.
Well, a favourite number can be for no particular reason. Mine is 27, why I don't know, it just feels good.
I prefer 1692
Yeah, my favourite number has 4 digits. Why not though?
@@Propulus my favourite is also 27 because of my bday
@@Propulus yuck thats a terrible number i feel like we wouldnt be friends irl
Mines 410...
Excellent video! So well animated and explained! 🙏
Another top video, keep it up mate! 😁
So why didn't anyone choose 15? Just a coincidence I'd say.
the real question is why no one chose 69

You can fairly say your editing is simple, but definitely not terrible!
Waiting for the season review with high expectations \o/
I quite like the idea of a modification to the 1973-95 system. Teams pick two consecutive numbers to use permanently, except they use 1 and 2 when they have the drivers' champion. No shuffling or anything: that way Ferrari can always be 27 and 28, Williams can always be 5 and 6 etc.
it all changed because Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR was so associated with his number 3 that he started making a shit ton of money on black #3 merch. F1 saw it and wanted a piece of that sweet merchandising action.
"What year is the only time 18 and 19 had been present since 2014?"
---
My answer is 2017...
And of course, the one guy who took the forbidden number HAD to be Maldonado.
He might have taken it to troll every one of us..
😝
Double that, we have Kvyat's... XD
This is the best video I’ve seen in years thank you so much for this 👍🏼👍🏼
I wonder, are drivers allowed to switch to another number once it expires after two full seasons? (Maybe depending on if their first pick wasn't available at the time?)
miles4711 no, the number the first picked stays with them until they retire so they can't change it
Permanent driver number, I guess that’s very self-explanatory.
@@ravindrabastari9013 That doesn't quite hold up tho. Say you "retire" for more than 2 seasons, some rookie comes in and takes your number, and you rejoin formula 1. You now can't get your old number back and have to choose a new one.
@@Excludos You are correct.
@TheWeeaboo Neither the fact that Ricciardo is changing teams nor that he is lower in the Drivers' Championship make any difference.
The rule is very simple (extract form the FIA 2019 Formula One Sporting Regulations, article 9.2):
"Prior to the start of the 2014 World Championship season race numbers will be permanently
allocated to drivers by ballot, such numbers must then be used by that driver during every Formula One World Championship Event he takes part in throughout his career in Formula 1.
A driver’s career in Formula 1 will be deemed to have ended if he does not participate in an
Event for two entire consecutive Championship seasons.
Any new drivers, either at the start of or during a season, will also be allocated a permanent
number in the same way.
The only exception to this allocation process will be for the reigning World Champion who will
have the option to use the number one. The number that was previously allocated to him will be reserved for him in subsequent seasons if he does not retain the title of World Champion."
You choose a number and stay with it for your whole career, no matter what your favourite number is, what is better for your marketing, or whatever.
38 is actualy a saint number in my country as famous hockey player and amazing person used it before he died in an tragic plane crash
1:21 - Baku is not in Afghanistan it is in Azerbaijan!
Well...
Kabul
Baku
They're similar.
Baran Yıldırım It was close enough
In Germany these numbers are called „Schnapszahlen“ (grm. Booze/schnaps numbers). that ist because in a dice game you have to take a shot everytime you make a number consists twice by the same numbre.
Edit: @9:35
Your channel is "Chain Bear", you like the number 38.
The number 38 was used once by Oliver BEARman...))
That's not his permanent racing number.
I grew up with the number system from 96 to 2013 and never questioned it. But when they introduced that permanent number for a drive I thought that was genious, putting an emphasys on the driver and their marketability!
Chose the number 13.
Shows his car in a collision and in the process of flipping over.
Actually though whats wrong with the number 15?
9:10 Is there a reason nobody has picked #15?
Rewatching even though I've already watched it on Autosport
Oh my god, my favorite number is also 38! Been using it since I was 5 (from hockey, it was randomly given but it's epic).
Is this video unlisted or why does it have 14 views? Some deal with autosport or something?

@@satyris410 Yeah, you must have watched the Autosport version, I know I did
One Video that Chainbear makes has to go to Autosport, the rest comes here, Its part of a deal they have together. in turn autosport supports Chainbears channel.
This is good for chainbear as he gets their followers once they get that chainbear has his own channel.
it's so nice of chainbear to wish his favorite number to be taken by another driver before he makes it to f1 himself
Russell took "my" number :(. Starting a career in F1 2019 is a little frustrating now lol
The number 63?
17 being unlucky in Italy made me instantly think of Bianchi
Hey, I use number 15 in F1 2018

It's really interesting to me that so many people have favorite numbers!
If it was me I would just pick randomly
I am taking 11
Because, JAMES HUNT
I am a ENORMOUSLY GIGANTIC fan of James Hunt.
If they used the modern system back then, Hunt would've definitely chosen 69.
Good luck knocking Perez, out then to get that number😂
It was 2017 with Felipe Massa driving the number 19 and Lance Strolls first season with the number 18. With the end of Massas career at the end of 2017, the first time it will become available will be 2020.
You do realise that Max Verstappen used 38 for his free practice sessions in 2014.
Welcome to the orange army Chain Bear. ;)
Another great one!! I would pick 91 as my F1 number. I actually pick this number in the F1 game series.
What’s the deal with number 15?🤔
I'd like to know too
Yeah, i want to know why
I know I'm a bit late to the party haha but I think it is because it was used as a third car for two consecutive years so drivers don't want to be associated with a third car when they're only 2 teammates.
I'm not going to like your comment bc it is at 15 right now
1:24 you made a mistske
My favourite number is 16 so i guess im Lucky cause its also my favourite driver Charles Leclerc
Same here lol
#38 huh?
Sean Gelael ran that in practice with Toro Rossi at the end of 2017, he's your man
What I want to know is, when they had "permanent" numbers from 1974 onwards, why didn't someone just say, we'll reserve 1 and 2 for the winning constructor and the following season reserve their old numbers for them to slot back in? Would've made so much more sense.
Yeah, but when did anything the F1 management do make any sense?
I was bored so I did a research to see how the 2021 grid would look like with the 74-95 numbering system:
1,2: Mercedes (or 0,2 in a wild case of Lewis retiring)
3,4: Red Bull
5,6: Williams
7,8: Alpine
9,10: Aston Martin
11,12: Alpha Tauri
14,15: Ferrari
16,17: Alfa Romeo
18,19: McLaren
20,21: Haas
How did you work it out? (A Spreadsheet please)
@@mandrke I went to Wikipedia and listed the results of all seasons since 96
And then checked how F1 teams names changed overtime (thanks WTF1)
