    Just purchased a Gen 2 Fathom 25N. Excited to try it out and experience the new features. Love all my current Fathom 2 speeds. Loading it with 50# Izorline solid braid and a short 40# mono topshot. Will be used for live bait and jigging. Will be fishing it for the 1st time on an 8 day trip in Oct2022.

      Lee! That’s awesome, it’ll be fun. 8 days!!! I’m envious lol. Have 2x 3day trips before end of year. I’m looking between the Gen 1 and 2, still up in the air with this drag cam and lever.

      @john smith I posted it. Think it might have been a different thread.
      Short version - I love it. Used it a lot on the trip as a 40# live bait setup. Performed flawlessly. Casts great. Strong. Looks sharp. Caught at least 50 fish (YT, YFT) with the majority being released. Highly recommend.

    Congratulations again the PENN product development team. The Fathom II LD series won "Best new multiplier [conventional] saltwater reel" at the EFTTEX Show [European fishing tackle show]

      Awesome news. Congrats to them. I uploaded the full vid for the 25nld2 and take a look in comparison with Gen 1

    Honestly, these aren’t as interesting as i would have hoped. The sideplate is going to make maintaining the clicker harder, the larger handle is not going to be supported with that a handle that thin, and issues with a walking cam are not a huge issue. The new 2 speed system is alright though. I wanted to see a more optimized cam for higher drag settings and a updated drag system to eliminate side load. Hopefully they make a new torque with something new. As of now ill be sticking to my speedmasters and talicas.

      Agree. I’m actually really happy with everything I currently use and own at the moment, only added this more for the audience as I feel everyone prefers latest new thing vs what already works. Penn already did a great job on V1 of the Fathom. The Torque is just a beauty to have in the arsenal, I added a Torque 30ld2 after foamers were close by home trips so I can bomb into them and still have low gear just in case. My Talicas are truly the bread and butter of the line up that just can’t be replaced.
      Let’s see how these things hold up, already read some reporting damage to handle upon opening box.

      @@Seastheday88 yeah the V1’s last forever but they seem to get really stiff past 10lbs of drag compared to the speedmaster. I used a fathom 30ld2 and 25nld for 40-50 duties and 14-17lbs of drag was annoyingly tight for them. The thrust bearing doesn’t seem to as effective as it’s supposed to be. I tried the speedmaster 12 this year and was blown away, it gets tons more drag and is surprisingly unaffected by drag under 25lbs, even at 36 which is the max it feels like the fathom at 22lbs (sunset). Hopefully they do something to reduce all that sideload at lower drag settings. The speedmaster 12ii is basically a fathom 40n’s drag in a 25n body.

    Do you know the size comparisons to Avet reels? Would size 30 be comparable to LX size? Or 40n to HXJ?

    • @Seastheday88
      @Seastheday88  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve held the Avets but haven’t had them side by side. Looking at spool capacity, they are very close and similar. Even by weight it’s close. LX/30 has close drag. While the HXJ shows 10lb more at full compared to 40n.
      I’m on a trip soon and hopefully someone has those avets to compare with. I’ll be bring both 40n and 30.

    Is the lever drag handle metal or graphite ? It looks like graphite with the dull color

      The Gen 2’s weakness compared to Gen 1: Flimsy Thin Handle, Inferior Silver Paint like the Old Daiwa Saltist, Plastic Cam & Lever Drag….most likely Penn Engineers are Not Anglers..
