- Her story is remarkable. When she left home at 17 she wasn't able to come back home. She soon met a man, got pregnant, and married by the age of 19. It became a toxic relationship and she found herself planning an exit strategy with no money to her name and no support from family, with two children to take care of.
Meet Emily Adams..."I grew up always asking “why” and dreaming of finding true happiness.
Born and raised in the Amish culture I always wondered why. Why did we live differently? Was there more to life than being Amish? Was there true happiness somewhere?
I was not your average Amish girl. I had no interest in learning how to cook, clean, sew, or do anything girly. I was a tomboy who loved to be outside, playing sports and training horses.
At the age of 17, I made the decision to leave the culture and leave everything I had known my entire life. This was the first time in my life that I realized the amount of mental strength I had and the ability to believe in myself even when no one believed in me.
A year later I was pregnant with my oldest son, Jordan, and got married at 19. A year into the verbally abusive marriage I knew I needed out but felt stuck since I just found out I was pregnant with my youngest son, Cameron. Fast forward two years I knew I needed to leave the abusive marriage for myself and my boys. Gathering up what strength I had, I filed for divorce and became a single mom."
Emily's story is remarkable. In this video, she shows us how you can leave home, but home doesn't leave you. Her journey towards releasing what no longer served her in her culture, and really stepped into her power as a mom is a beautiful one. She now coaches other women on how to transform their mindset and live in a place of truth.

I very much admire Emily for her courage and strength. I also believe that being Amish is not just a culture, it is a religion as well. The culture and the religion are mixed, like in many other religions. I always felt when I was a child, and I was raised Roman Catholic, that the bible was written by men to benefit men. I did not experience unreasonable behavior from anyone, but I noticed that the opinions, written in the bible, were biased and not sincere. Biased information can lead to injustice, and it does within the Amish community (and in other religious communities as well). I respect religious communities, but I will never be a part of them, because I believe it is better to have your own thoughts and opinions.
I support the women who left . ❤️
I’m so sorry for what you and your sons went through. The fact that you forgave your husband is amazing. It took courage to tell the story. You are an amazing person.
Amazing. Glad you got out safe. Thanks for sharing your story.
I wanted to add that you have gone through a LOT of trauma and you have done SO WELL to leave that abusive man and give you and your boys a better life. I can't believe how much you controlled WHAT you said about the boys' father. Well done!!! Very proud of you. 😊 May you continue to grow stronger and remain close to your boys.
My son's mom is not letting him or I see my granddaughter - we're going to try peaceful ways. This was very helpful! 😃
I know exactly what Emily is saying,it happened to me as a hutterite sll I ever heard was how bad I was so I became an angry mean don't give a damn person took off on my own at 15 years old ,I hah 3 dollars and a pack of camel cigarettes and a job lined up went to to work on a small farm/ ranch I'm seventy years old got two great children four grandsons been married 49 years and I have taxied the Amish ,I like some of them but not the ones that think I'm an outlaw because I left the same kind of brain washing behind, being a a person that calls it like I see it,I suppose they have a right to see me as a threat, the only thing I ever tell the young people stay away from drugs and don't drink to much
Are you on Facebook? Just started watching you, as we live near amish communities in north central Minnesota. You are totally amazing. Yes we did watch #1 Take care and thank you for informing us on this cult?
I watched your first video and was struck by how courageous you are. I began watching this second video and can relate to leaving a toxic and abusive marriage However, I was very surprised when you commented that your parents wanted to see their grandchildren, so you agreed to “slide back” so to speak into your previous life by obeying the “rules” and wearing a dress?! Being the mother of two boys myself (or even girls) I would worry that is teaching them to be okay with a patriarchal society. I feel that religion is tantamount to child abuse. I was raised southern baptist, church 3x a week, revivals, and dresses and a terrifying fear of hell. I was talking to a Jewish friend one day (20 years ago) and she was telling me how she came to realize she was an atheist. I began explaining to her that I was pretty sure I was an atheist, but terrified of going to hell. She replied that it seemed that was all that I was still holding onto- fear. That is when I knew I needed therapy and deprogrammg. I’m 53 now and it took me years to get over abuse that was hiding behind religion. And I’m still trying to forgive my parents. I can not imagine going through what you did.You seem like an amazing mom.
I didn't slide back to wearing a dress or to their culture. I still showed up to see them but was wearing what I wanted to wear not what they told me to wear.
I can understand the amount of reprogramming it does take! I'm going through that now 🙂
I'm so grateful that religion isn't a major part of life here in the UK, I admire how Emily found a way out of the Amish community, Emily may not have had such a great start after leaving the community but now she's moving forward with her life with her sons.
I know people from other religions, Mormon, Jehovah's witnesses etc, as an outsider looking in, I noticed that women are treated like second class citizens, as a man, although I'm single, if I were with a partner, I would consult them with regard to any decisions, but I've read bits of the Jehovah's witnesses Bible and the Mormon Bible, they are very anti women in many ways, not all, I'm not going to say that they're completely anti women, but I admire your strength and courage to escape.
Bethy, I I haven't ignored your comment, I hope that you and Emily have a successful future and your past experiences at least the bad ones leave you in favour of positive experiences, good luck ladies
@@andrewgage6942 thank you for your kind words!
@@EmilyAdams_ I can understand your situation with regard to an abusive marriage, my sperm donor was abusive to my mother, my sister and myself, it is/was racist, homophobic and an animal with its fists, what you described in your first marriage was the same as we had to put up with with the addition of physical violence, we parted ways in 1989 and it was the best thing to happen in my life, my parents divorced, it really screwed up my mother right up until she passed away in 2019, I don't know what happened with the sperm donor, honestly, I don't really care, I don't wish it any harm, I'm just glad it's out of our lives.
@@andrewgage6942 I'm glad you don't have to deal with it anymore.
I live in the middle of an Amish settlement in central Ontario Canada.
These Amish use Martin Luther's 1522 High German Bible. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch and not really true German in most cases. They educated in English but not educated officially in most cases in the German language of their bible.
Most of them have no clue of true Christianity.
Are you God?
Who are you to define "real Christianity"?
@@stephenfisher3721 No I am certainly not God. However I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ through his death, burial and resurrection. In the process I became "Born again." My conversion to true Christianity from being a "False convert to Christianity" is exactly according to what the perfect word of God teaches in the 1611 Authorized Version or King James Version teaches.
In order to be a "true Christian" one must thoroughly believe the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ, which is distinctly noted in the following scripture;
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
King James Version
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures
If one truly believes that salvation is only possible according to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus one must approach God in prayer as a repentant sinner calling upon God asking for forgiveness and salvation.
Some sins cannot be forgiven resonates with me. So many religions have this judgement yet if God loves us he will forgive and rejoice when he meets us. I feel this conflict.
According to the bible all sins are forgiven once a person is born again. The only sin that is never forgiven is a person's choice to reject Jesus as their personal savior.
John 3:36 KJV
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Amish is not German per se. I am German and Amish is unintelligible to native German speakers from Germany
I thought it was low German or Pennsylvania Dutch. Heard of low Swedish.
It is their dialect of German.
There used to be many dialects of German, some quite different.
The Andrew Sisters recorded an Americanized version of a Yiddish song in 1937. Yiddish is the language of European Jews. The song retained the Yiddish line, Bei Mir Bistu Schoen. It became a big hit in Germany, even among Nazis who assumed it was a German dialect. It was a major embarrassment when the Nazis learned it was Yiddish.
Is Swiss German German?
Do you understand Swiss German?
never bad mouth the other parent= I totally agree!
Brilliant story can anybody tell me what name she is under on Utub please. Good story gbh ❤️
I realized that wearing pants

Women who have been initially brainwashed and threatened with the wrath of God and the withdrawal of parental and heavenly love can fall prey to an abusive man. It took courage and perseverance and is an example for others that they can do it, as well. I do wonder however, if there isn't an organization run by other Amish "refugees" who help those who are in need? Seems as though it would help people like Emily, who have recognized that the culture they were born into, is no longer compatible with who they are.
Amish rescue mission
I wish she could have been allowed to keep talking without constant interruptions.

Having a personal relationship with Jesus is the only way to find the unconditional love we all seek. No one or anything can filled that space.
No we do not ALL SEEK god ,
In my country god is not really mentioned although we have many very old churches we seem to enjoy the architecture and a lot of people get married in them because they are nice ....not many virgins ...most people just live together....most don’t follow a organised religion written and changed by man when used to control people or try to feed them guilt.....
We have a lovely life without all that .....brainwashing, fear tactics, bullying , and ignorant shunning...and then the church steps in ?? pathetic behaviour......
That may be your belief but my belief is God is within all of us and we just have to know how to find that and tap into it.
Uh, your gods love is unconditional?! But he will send you to hell if you don’t love him back? That is the very example of “conditional love”.
@@idgie68able He doesn’t want anyone to go to hell. But he can only allow people into heaven that don’t want to sin. Otherwise we will have the same problem in heaven that we have here. If someone wants to continue sinning He has no other choice.
@@MrPaultopp I’m also living free from religion with my family I don’t want anything to do with religion at all.
Um...she felt happy...???
A balanced Biblical worldview sets us free. What about the love of Jesus who cleanses us from sin, guarantees eternal by grace through faith and gives us liberating principles to live by.
The Amish community looks like a cult.
Please don’t run from bad religion to another cult of worldly philosophy and agnosticism.
She is Amish rebel 😄😄
There is a lot here. The marriage you got into was probably worst than what you might of had in the Amish community. I’am not Amish but this whole atmosphere you are in is still garage. It is too bad you couldn’t have found a love in your community and develop who you are. Your family fail you but this world is crap. Don’t buy into it ! You will be disappointed
I am sorry, I was agreeing with Brenda Lunsford.
Without a personal relationship with Jesus everyone will go to Hell.
Most Christians have no personal relationship with Jesus even if they say they do. Most put on a show.
Interesting to know that 99% of the world is or will be in Hell.
Jesus was on Earth some two thousand years ago. You are probably pretending you have a personal relationship with Jesus.
It sounds like rebellion led to catastrophe. Even though she questioned things, if she had accepted her misfortune until she could meet a decent man, her life would have been spared. We all have to put up with our have-nots and make the best of it until things get better. However, when we make moves without a lot of prayer, it can get all messed up. Perhaps a lesson we should learn is to pray more and throughout the day. If we have communion or a relationship with God, then we have confidence we can go on when we have talked to him about it.
That is your perception and your beliefs. This was my path and you didn't live it so you may have a different opinion and perception since you don't know what it is like to go through things like this. I stand in my beliefs and know in my soul that I did what I knew best in the moment.
Oh wow. How Holier than thou of you! She was practically in prison!!! Being held against her will!! And she was supposed to just pray?! Wait for a man? Stfu. Seriously. Because your post is beyond ridiculous. Just Stfu.
UR only partly hearing her.
@@EmilyAdams_ hey Emily, it is wonderful that you DID question things. You have a right to your own thoughts and opinions. I'm much older than you, but I questioned what was called SCRIPTURE and have now discovered the entire NT is a total fabrication, plus some books of the Tanak, aka Old Testament. This religion called Christianity is used to control people. I still adhere to the Tanak and obedience to Torah, which is way different to Christianity, which I was involved in for about 50 years! The NT was written by The Flavians and Pisos who were Roman Emporers. That is my little story, lol. Thank you for being honest, you are a sweet soul. Mrs Kerry from Australia
@@QuestionThingsUseLogic thank you for sharing!
Why didn't you rumspring? Or have they ended that practice? You weren't baptized into the amish religion.
I think the guys do that but I’m not sure
There are different orders. More "liberal" orders do this, but the one she was in it was just a time to be with peers in a church group. My understanding, in the liberal orders you just take this time to figure if you will join the church or not, it's not how the media portrays it.
