Hi Angela. I'm not a goth and never pretended to be one but as an alternative person I respect the subculture and like some of its music and I find your videos highly inspirational & educating. You're a voice of common sense on this topic. Always eagerly waiting for your new videos. Thank you.

Oh geez, JM is HG--human garbage. The fact he shares a planet with us is triggering enough. No need to apologize about him. As for Itsblackfriday, she is hit or miss on goth things. Same with Toxic Tears (Kaya tho' I will argue was such in a bad relationship, she is now really finding herself). I think you're a sweetheart opening yourself up like this.

Yes reactive abuse, it really is a confusing manipulative game that leaves your head spinning until you realize what has actually taken place. The recovery process is definitely difficult. Thank you for touching on this subject again🖤

It's so disorienting. It's like you're on the receiving end of an onslaught and the other person might even be yelling or erratic in their behavior however once you snap and start to react, that person suddenly becomes incredibly calm and lucid. Their voice immediately softens, their face stoic and concerned as they watch you break down just so they can display how stable they are as you crumble into an absolute mess. It's all by design.

17:00 that part!! people don't fall into this subculture out of ignorance surrounding their mental health. they CHOOSE this path out of self-awareness and de-stigmatizing emotional expression.

My favorite example of a non presenting Goth is Simon Pegg. You would have NO idea by looking at him but he's super into the music. He's given an interview or two about it. He's also just an incredibly nice guy.

Such a motivating message 🖤 I am one of the goths on the inside. I do wear mostly black and love my band shirts but never wore any goth outfits and kinda always did feel like it was a bit of a gated community. So this is lovely.

There are so many undercover goths out there. One of my dear friends is one of them! There are so many different reasons why a person doesn't dress the part whether it be a conscious effort or out of necessity. Either way, it's important that people like you don't feel as if you're not part of the subculture just because you're not out there gothing it up aesthetically.

Personally I just started discovering goth within this past year. I had always liked the style of dress throughout my life but I had no idea it was a music based subculture until I started dressing it myself and wanted to know more. What I like about the music is how a lot of songs seem to involve more bass. Thank you for sharing your information with me and being a part of my journey

Thank you so much. I'm really glad that you enjoy the message. In hindsight I was really upset that I didn't include that part but at the time it was a bit overwhelming to be talking about it so it kind of slipped my mind. Either way, it's an important aspect to get out there because there are so many people conflicted by the same trauma brought on by reactive abuse not realizing that they had in fact suffered at the hands of it.

You're battle of equating music with our gothic subculture is not in vain. So-o-o many young goths mirror your words now, where just a couple of years ago--preach, choir, etc--it really was just being taken over by "style" via "e-girls" or whatevs. However, now at least most make efforts to mostly put in goth music into their little tik tok vids or Insta reels whereas prior they would put in some top 40 ish every single time.

I was a goth when I lived in Cali, but moving to Montana you have no one to hang with when you can not blend in. So I just slowly allowed it to only be on my inside. I still remember how much it was a fashion and the music for me. I just loved how I felt. Now that I am moving to a new state maybe I can revisit it again. I am glad many of us are still around. Social repose is emo. And Jake blah. He is such a worthless human.

I'm not so long time on your channel.
I think I watched many important videos - about how your gothic life started, how it was to be a goth in 90s, about 90s Internet chats - I was impressed. I'm even not a goth, I'm from rapcore/alternative spectrum, but felt like a friendly soul when listened.
In some sense I have platonic fetish to all subcultures (except nazi skinheads -they are rubbish).
When I see goths, punks, metalheads, emo - I like them and think they all are my friendly souls in some way. I can disappoint later, yes. I expect they wikk think friendly about me too, cause 'we both are individualities and know what conflict with normies is', but some of them don't like me, and it's more sad then if normies don't like me - it's at least not surprising.
Or if without sexualizing it can't be called a fetish? I don't know for 100%.
I watched the story about your relations too. I feel sad that it happened with you. I don't know how to be in toxic relations, cause I'm aroace at all, but I know how is it - almost lost your own personality. I almost lost mine in other situation. And my mom is mow in abusive relations, so many people are, and they don't deserve it, and the victims are not guilty.
You said that you are designer. I don't know - did you ever showed your clothing for followers? If not - I'm interested to see. Cause I make clothing (only for myself) too, and you have a good taste

My Mum is a very 'my way or the highway' type of person. My experience with reactive abuse is my Mum refusing to take 'no' for an answer and pestering me until I either do what she wants or stand my ground and fight for important things. Then, she gets even angrier and says I'm not to raise my voice to her/ how dare I argue with her etc. while totally ignoring the fact that this wasn't my initial reaction.

  • @northernway4769

Thanks for a great video. A great gift is to get through tough life experiences and feel that you matured and grew from them. I got my share, including some reactive abuse and mind games. Luckily it only took 2 1/2 year to get through. Fortunately I had a good therapist supporting me through it. I got late into goth, after being into all the base cultural aspects, aesthetics, music, literature, fashion, through 20 years (late 70s to mid 90s). I discovered the subculture through the early internet. I like it because of its great bandwidth. Really well displayed at WGT, a wide range of music, fashion and cultural expressions. I have a very curious mind so I would never settle into a culturally walled garden. I love trad goth music, but also Beach boys, Tom Jones, Neneh Cherry, Bach, Rosalia and a lot more. My best advice to new goths up through the years: Go to goth clubs and events as early as possible in the evening. In my experience those who turn up then are "nice ones". The ones that organise events, build the community, and are very happy to see new faces. The arrogant elitist bunch that look disdainful on everyone not following the local codes usually turn up later, and could mostly be ignored.

I knew about 7 kids who had cut in HS but besides 1 goth kid, none of those other people I knew who were goth. The 1 goth kid also had issues with other things like doing drugs and they weren't someone I hung out with. honestly most of those kids who were cutting were doing drugs like Acid and E.

I may not be as verbal about it as I was in the 90's but yeah.....I used to argue with 'Christian' or 'Muslim' 'Goths' online that there is nothing for you in our culture.
Though I still believe this I am more forgiving to a point in my older age, Being Spiritual is totally cool with me now and I sometimes partake in what our reality is and the history of Space/Science and humanities place therein.

But that's where TikTok confuses me - so many are adamant on Goth being a fashion culture and downright refuse to acknowledge the music and I can't fathom why when it's downright amazing. I's full of mystery, eariness, makes me feel as though I've stepped into my own world. The entire subculture is so tranquil, and puts a smile on my face. I look forward to really delving into it, and I'm thankful channels like yours exist to actually educate those posers and us babybats on actually being Goth. You've taught us so much. 🤗

I thought this was going be another of those videos you eluded to.
Here is my problem as someone whom had started as a J Rock and Visual Kei.
Even if one switched their interests, and focused exclusively on American Goth Roxk. What happens when they become a musician, and carry over that influence?
Turns out Coldwave meets J Rock ends up very similar to Gothic Metal.
So the bulk my issue is with the "Goth Rock isnt Gothic Metal" types. It offers nothing useful to people whom came from Visual Kei first.
Also trying to also supplement Pinterest to fill in the gaps of my knowledge, and my actual aim is character reference outfits for a webcomic. That is for a gothic fiction. Gothic fiction and goth rock is not the same thing.

  • @KaiDecadence
    @KaiDecadence ปีที่แล้ว +9

† On the fashion thing, it was actually a breath of fresh air to have someone not be so focused on the clothes. The landscape of the "goth" TH-cam back in the early-mid 2010s was very polarizing when it came to the music because so many "goth" channels would only talk about fashion and not much else. And some of the darkly-inclined channels calling themselves "goth" who did talk about "goth music", they would be talking about bands like Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, HIM, Type O Negative, Nine Inch Nails, and Rammstein, pretty much bands that weren't goth at all and if you so much as uttered actual goth bands and dared say that those bands were not goth, you were called an "elitist", "gatekeeper", and/or "bully". So to have someone actually speak on the music and not be ashamed of it while explaining why those aforementioned bands weren't goth in a non-condescending way was more than necessary and in turn, helped many newcomers actually get into the scene and learn what it truly was, by getting exposed and encouraged to trying out actual goth bands and this snowball effect lead to where nowadays you have more newcomers who actually know goth music or at the very least are given the true resourcers of getting into the scene thanks to playlists and discussion videos about the music.
Compared to 2010 to about 2015 when this stuff was hardly spoken about, this an amazing thing. And though there are still people who think that the scene is about fashion/clothes and listening to metal music, there are others who understand and learn that the scene is a music-based subculture (based around goth, deathrock, darkwave, and ethereal wave) and they can make their own decision if they want to go through with it or understand & realize that they don't need to be goth to like dark things. It's beautiful. You did your part spreading helpful information and now it's fine to talk about the fashion because it won't take away the music help you have provided on your channel.
† As for the call outs, it was a necessary evil that had to be done because many of them had (and continue to have) large platforms that were spreading the misinformation and sometimes even negative stereotypes (the ones who called themselves "goth thots"). Someone had to speak out against it otherwise things probably would've gotten worse. It's one thing when you have someone like It's Black Friday making content that isn't necessarily targeted at goths because she does play goth music in her videos at the very list and hasn't spread misinformation about what goth music actually vs someone like Jake Munro, Toxic Tears, and Social Repose where it's just obvious they aren't into the music but try spreading the whole "goth mindset" shtick. But at this point in time, there's enough actual goths helping with exposing the actual music to anyone who is interested in truly learning about the goth scene.

It's really creepy to try to take advantage of mentally ill people, and people with issues with self-esteem and family, goth or not.
Victims of these issues are often not submissives coming from a healthy place. True submission comes from a place of having self-esteem and power over yourself, then CHOOSING to give to someone else out of TRUST, not fear of abuse or abandonment.
I know this might sound gatekeepy, but I am trying to show the difference between ethical, chosen power exchange and abuse. I am not saying people with mental illness can't be in a ethical PE relationship, I am saying the way the relationship forms and continues show if it is healthy and ethical.
An ethical dominant negotiates, respects limits, and knows consent should be able to ended at any time without fear of backlash or abuse.
Please take care of yourselves, and watch out for others.

Laura Purdy's Pale Court stuff can still be looked at on the wayback machine. The nostalgia and tragedy of it came to mind when you were talking about fashion. I feel like Kambriel, Purdy, and others were more part of the scene(than just people who make dark themed clothing) because they patronized goth musicians and artists, and vice versa.

A few years ago, I attended a few college classes. There were Goths in my classes. I was old enough to be their grandparents, but they accepted me and were very approachable. They were some of the nicest and academically astute people I've ever encountered. I could discern that a few of my fellow classmates came from troubled families or relationships. I befriended a lovely young Goth lady. Over time, she confided in me. She told me about physical and mental abuse from her guy. I told her to get away from him, stay away from him and begin bonding more with her father, mother, and siblings. The lady ended up obtaining a restraining order against her ex-guy. I suggested that she attend groups for women who've suffered abuse. I also encouraged her to find wisdom in The Book of Proverbs. The last I saw of her was before Christmas 2022. She was with her family and new-found boyfriend. I could tell she was living a loving and fulfilled life. Thanks, Angela Benedict. Stay safe. 🐈‍⬛

I am an old school early 90s goth, I do not dress and or look it anymore but my music is still Bauhaus, Sisters, Skinny Puppy etc. So when they posted metal or alternative guys. Used to drive me nuts when someone would say oh it is about what's in your heart not the music. Gah No! it is literally all about the music,! because I would not call myself a Goth, although I love black If my music taste was just merely 80s or Dark wave or New wave or electronic. It is not I mean yes I do love that stuff as well but my heart sings to Goth music. Also HIM is pop music made to look goth lol

Thanks for your older videos, about a month ago I made a decision and broke up with someone who was treating me like your ex. It was incredibly hard for me for seeing that person doing this same method: blaming everything on me, on my mental health for his bad decisions. He was the one who felt the more hurt than me.
I was able to see the technique through your story, and realized he's turning me grey slowly, but more subtle ways, like not saying having tattoos are bad or my piercing is ugly, just throwing that he would be sad for those on me. He knew my history of domestic abuse, and made it very uncomfortable for me having a nose piercing. Or mentioning nose rings are not pretty, not feminine enough. Even though I gave him the benefit of the doubt for not knowing that much social norms and empathy we was still manipulating me.
Just to know that my story has a kinda happy ending:
Last week I bought myself a nose ring. And never felt so empowered within a year. I hope Angela's video help others too 🖤🖤
Also, I'm glad for mentioning that Munro uses the gothbranding for himself to make money, and tended to hide very well his abusive and creepy behvaiour toward fans and others int he community.
By letting anyone use goths to playout social norms and dodge any type of controversy or consequences just ending up all horrible stereotypes about us. And those who suffer from those sellout abusers are turning that person to a "missing stair"- a problem that goes ignored, because no one wants to face the issue that would confirm bad stereotypes.

Simply put, to be Gothic or 'Goth' one need only have a natural, not forced, affinity for and attraction to the morose, morbid, melancholy and macabre facets of life, expressed primarily through music, fashion, art and literature, in addition but not limited to, cosmetology, architecture, film/cinema, poetry, dance and other forms of expression.
If the 'Goth' subculture is solely about the style or genre of music, why the specific aesthetic and accoutrements, why all the black, bats, skulls, spiders and coffins. "There's a difference between Gothic and Goth!", they cry! Gothic music, just like Gothic Fashion, existed long before the 1980's and can be heard throughout the classical music genre, via composers like Wagner, Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy and many others.
