  • Time to clean up the 1947 Chrysler Mopar new Yorker spitfire flathead straight 8 with its first wash since at least 2001. My dad trys a new method using his buffer and bucket of Comet or ajax as some call it... Then we hit the rd, then we pull the head / fix the brakes.. (kind of) and hit the rd again!
First video where we extract it from the barn: • Barn find 1947 Chrysle...

Some background on "Fluid Drive". The one in the 46-52 Chryslers (maybe going back to 38) have four forward gears. Pretty good, eh? There were two gears in the low range and two higher gears in the high range. The semi automatic feature was separate from the Fluid coupling feature. The shifting was automatic up or down with the range between the two gears. This is sometimes called "Tip toe shift" because the upshift was controlled by letting up on the accelerator above a certain speed. And the downshift was provoke by pushing down on the gas provided you were below a certain speed. Not really your toe, in my opinion.
The Fluid Coupling allowed the car to stop without touching the clutch or the shifter.
Lower line cars (like Dodge) had a Fluid Coupling and three forward gears. There was no automatic upshift or downshift between the gears. You can stay in third all day, but if you do , you will have some sluggish acceleration.
So, some guys argue about how many speeds Fluid drive had. It is understandable because Chrysler Corp mixed and matched the terms around.
If you watch a movie like Miracle on 34th Street, 1947 the cabs are DeSotos
    www.imcdb.org/m39628.html
It is said DeSoto cornered the market of urban taxis by offering a transmission that didn't require constant clutch work in stop and go city driving.

I had a 1948 Chrysler New Yorker that a girl and her grandfather had started working on it was in very nice shape but they never got it running because there was a hole in the gas tank and they lost the key. I paid $200 for it, repaired the gas tank and in the meantime they found the key. I had it driving with just basic tune up procedures. I drove it for about a year a very comfortable car. I traded it for a 1938 Pontiac business mans coupe. 👍😁🎩

I'm very impressed! Your on your way to restoring that ol gal. If I don't hear from you again, hope she turns out for you. Hope your able to get those brakes in proper working order. I would never have thought a large old car with locked brakes would even get out of the barn. If you keep working on her I don't see why.you couldn't show her at the concourse de elegance at Vacaville CA. U.S.A. it's ultra fancy but if you've put this much work into her you might cosider keeping her and showing her. Thanks for wonderful entertainment! Your perseverance is paying off. You've saved her from the scrapper! I look forward to more vidios about this ol gal.bye for now.😅

A friend had a historical junkyard. Most of the vehicles were from the late Fourties to the Midsixties. He had two of those straight 8 monsters! One had a destroyed rear axle. When I saw them in the late Seventies I was nearly shivering with excitement. Those Chryslers together with a 48 Cadillac were the highlights in my opinion. The Goverment forced the owner to auction off all the 700 vehicles on the lot. One car I had been trying to get my hands on for Fourty years: A 57 Studebaker Silver Hawk. At the end the cars sold to someone else.
There was a 48 Mercury that was auctionned off for nearly 7000$. The winner paid for it, but he never came to pick it up. Some guys have to much money!
American cars from 1939 to 1950 are underrated in my opinion. They are incredibly solid, have great heavy steel bodies that are amazingly resistent to rust and they are beautiful!
Great that you are trying to rescue this incredible vehicle. And PLEASE: Do not sell it to someone who will mutilate it and turn it into a Resto Mod or a Hot rod!!!!

What a great job you did getting this car to run nice. With full power back you would hardly need to use the low range except for heavy towing or steep hill starts. In high range it will change down by itself at 12 mph unless you you use the kickdown before 12 mph. In the low range the set change speed is 6 mph. The kickdown will also work in the Low range. What a difference from these modern cars with it is with the high torque slow revving side valve motor which in high range could throw this car up to 50 mph in 3rd gear from a standing start unless you let off the gas before that.

This is a nice rig, I was born in this model car in 49, know it very well. People will lie to you about how well you did. I see it a bit different... not really trying to do all it takes to make one right before going for a rip or drive. I follow and do use the rig if possible to get the rust off of drums to make easier pulling but to just keep driving seems very risky. I was a mechanic for my dad first in late fifties handing tools and then working full time in his shop. My dad was a mopar guy before it was a thing to be a mopar or no car thing. I was pulling heads and doing valves when I just turned a double digit of age or ten years of age. Copper head gaskets just need to be placed in a pan of hot water and soaked for a while to get them to swell up for a real good seal. We used diesel heated up in a pan big enough for the gasket to lay flat in. I can only think that your afraid to pull the head was the excuse for not doing sooner. Master cylinders are a easy build, especially when the floor pan will come up. Remember Google can be a friend when research is necessary to even find out how to shift a transmission. It has first and second in the up position on the shift lever and second and third in the high position. The very high dollar transmission had a low range only in the standard first gear position but most did not have that option... I figure if yours doesn't allow you to place it into a "low gear" spot then is not got the high dollar option as very very few did. Those that did also had two ranges in the reverse position as well. I just hope that you make a better effort in the future as its always nice to see this old metal making a comeback

My dad had a 1947 Chrysler Windsor 2-dr. coupe with a flat-head 6 engine. It was a light olive green in color. We even had one of the cylindrical speed forced air cooler for the front passenger window that used water dripping across straw inside to produce cooling on summer trips. That car had the same transmission/clutch/fluid coupling (not a torque converter) as the New Yorker you worked on here. By the time I was old enough to begin driving, dad bought a 1955 Chrysler Windsor with 331cu-in. polyspherical head engine and powerflite automatic 2-speed transmission, power steering and brakes. These old 1940s models were very roomy inside and tough as nails! Good luck with the New Yorker!

You have to love those old flat heads. They hung in there for a lot of years. I believe it was 51 or 52 that Chrysler introduced the Hell Fire Hemi. They still have great engine names. And that paint... That had to be a baked Acrylic. the Comet and Ajax (two different products and different coarseness) would have ate right thru liqueur. Bother she's a pretty beast. Keep the body patina and freshen up the dog house, running gear and chassis. What a BEAUTY.

The transmission was called a "Semi Automatic". It had a torque converter which included a set of pressure plates and a clutch on the front side to interface with the flywheel.
The reason it does not up shift in low and in high is because the electric solenoids are not being activated when the accelerator is backed off after the engine has reached about 1,500 to 2,000 RPMs
The 12 volts may have over loaded them causing a shorted set if internal windings or they were seized up from sitting too long.
    Keep up the good work.

"Fluid coupler", not a torque converter. Both look like donuts.
The difference is technical with the latter offering torque multiplication.
The Fluid coupling in this case has fluid which is just inside it and is not shared with the gear box or the engine. It should never get "low" unlike, say a Torque Flite or even the "Fluid Torque Drive " standard in 1951 Crown Imperials.

    @auteurfiddler8706 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Fun fact. The Fluid drive uses super special fluid only available from your Mopar parts man. So they said. Hint: It was mainly whale oil! I'm sure you don't need any fluid in the fluid coupling.
I believe the gearbox also used the same fluid (the are separate and don't mix) but the consensus now is that you can use either any modern transmission fluid, any 10 wt gear oil, or any 5-20 wt synthetic motor oil. There are no friction surfaces, unlike a Torqueflite, so as long as it is lubbed up, it is fine.
You add fluid to the gearbox from the bottom. There is a fill plug and drain plug.

I'm a fellow "Fluid Drive " owner myself. First, let me say ignore every comment about it except those by michaelbenardo5695 . There are only 5 people I know of that are working on them. Including me. One I know personally and he has a couple of videos on his car. The other three are TH-cam guys. All but one are doing the transmission wrong.
You absolutely can NOT convert the car to 12 volt negative ground if you want the transmission to upshift and downshift. It seems you may have discovered this already. No matter what any Ford, VW, GM person, or even Mopar guys with other transmissions say.
I'm your fathers age. In, say, 1980, Joseph Dirt Sr. bought a 55 Chevy 210 Coupe. He wanted to put his Muntz 8 track player in the car. So he rewired it 12 volt negative and the tapes played. But he burned out the headlights and the tail lights. So he replaced the burned out 6 volt bulbs and lamps with 12 volt bulbs and lamps. "I converted to 12 volts!" he said. The gauges burned out after working backwards for a few hours, but what street rat needs gauges? There was no "Google" in 1980 so he could not have found out that there were voltage doublers to easily run the tape player at a fraction of the cost of new lamps for his so called conversion.
So now, 43 years later, people say you should convert 6 volt cars, (positive or negative ground) to 12 volt. "My pappy tole me!"
So, lets take a trip back to the present. There are TODAY 6 volt batteries, generators, alternators, alternator conversion kits, lamps, starters, headlights far better than the 12 volt equipment was in Joseph Sr's day back in 1980.
Using my 1951-52 Service manual as a guide (47 similar) there are three devices under the hood and another three on the transmission that control the transmission. "Gizmos" as my electrical engineer would call them (tongue in cheek).
The transmission is not hydraulically shifted. (like a Torqueflite or Ford C4 or GM THM350) It is "electro mechanically shifted." I'd say it is more complicated in that way than any transmission before ,say 1990.
Unless you can reverse polarity and rewind all the windings in each of the six gizmos, based on OHM's law and sophisticated ammeter measurements of the current draws, you can not get the shifting to work with 12 volt negative ground. I would have to consult all my automotive engineer and electrical engineer friends and relatives to even have a start at doing that.
Of the other four people working on the cars, none have gotten the transmission to shift up and down (in a given range) electro mechanically. I think, except for you, they don't even realize it isn't shifting, because they shift it like a mechanical shifting two speed between the ranges.

You are right about the electric solenoids that take care of the gear shifting feature. That would indeed make conversion to 12VDC a real challenge. I forgot about the solenoid operation of the transmission.

This car likely has Fluid Drive, and to go forward, just start in first with the clutch, then at about 15 mph, lift your foot from the gas and it automatically goes into second. And when you come to a stop, all you have to do is brake. You can resume from stop without clutching.😊

I agree - lots of work to convert to 12VDC. The blower motor and the wiper motors are 6VDC too and I'm not sure you could find a way to have them changed to 12VDC. The radio is also 6VDC operated with a vibrator power supply built in that converts 6VDC to around 250VDC to operate the vacuum tubes. The original tubes are 6VDC filament operated right off of the battery. It is possible to change the radio to 12VDC by changing to 12V filament tubes, but less expensive and easier to just repair the original radio as designed. Tubes, capacitors and resistors are still available to repair the radios. I have repaired some myself. Good luck!

This car has a stuck parking brake. That brake is a hub style located at the back of the transmission and the driveshaft goes through it. With this being stuck the Fluid-Drive won't work correctly. I suggest that you unstick the parking brake and reference the Factory Service Manual or Owner's Manual for proper operation of Fluid-Drive. There's a lot of misinformation on TH-cam for proper operation of Fluid-Drive.
Side note: I have a '48 Windsor that looks like this car. On the firewall tag (driver's side) is the paint code number. If it's #2 the color is called Saint Clair Blue. Good work guys.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw you trying to put the 14 inch 79 Camaro wheels on. I have a couple of those wheels , by the way.
The only wheels that will fit are 15 inch (I assume you have 12 inch drums ("Nascar stuff" as a certain TH-cam old car guy breathlessly calls them). The bolt circle and the hub diameter are the same as 60's and 70's Mopars and AMC's. Ford wheels will not work (hub diameter) nor will GM (bolt circle).
On my car (52), I only had one of the correct wheels. I could not use my spare 5 1/2 inch wheels from the 70's because the curves of the hub caps pushed against the curves of the 70's wheel, which were in different places than the 52 wheels.
I can't tell if you have original wheels. If you do have all four, count yourself very lucky.
I think they are 15x 4 1/2 or 15x 5. Narrower even than 51 Chryslers. But wheels were taller for their width in those days. Take a look at the fake whitewalls in the 46 brochure if you get a chance.
You and I can't run any aftermarket wheels, however. All of them require special NUTS and there is no equivalent in even right hand bolts. There are no new left hand bolts of any sort to be had at all, by the way.
Even some factory wheels with standard wheel mounting won't work. Even if you saw off the top of the peg/stud, the 5 rivets, protrude enough to prevent a wheel with a flat mounting surface to fit. If you use a spacer, the bolts aren't long enough and you lose the hub centering.

    • @auteurfiddler8706
      @auteurfiddler8706 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The wheels are of course tube type. From what I've seen, the wheels are very high quality and it looks like you could get away with a tubeless tire and no tube if you used a large base valve stem.
As much room as there was in the backspace area , the wheel mounting surface was so close to the fenders, I was only able to fit a 6 inch wide wheel and it looks like a 215 70r 15 or 205 75 r 15 is the biggest tire that would fit.
