    Resolve is much more powerful and has a learning curve. It is more flexible and the Studio version is very affordable with a one time payment. On the other hand, Avid First is a great learning tool to use before making a decision on upgrading to a full version of the software.

      This is a higher-end package than Sony Media Studio, but with limitations (esp re formats in and out). The best package to use is the one that works for you -- what matters most is the output. But if you are considering a switch, look at the latest version of DaVinci Resolve -- which I'll cover here fairly soon.

    Not to sound like an old fart, but. . . I remember shooting on 3/4" video tape and "digitizing" it - in real time - into the Avid. And we had to let it run overnight to render the effects.
    This is free. Amazing.

    First, really good explanation! I edit long form on Media composer. Consider that the aim of restricting "video formats" is to use a mighty powerfull and safe database management of medias asset on long form and on multi editors set-up. It is problems prone to edit on manually maintained media. That's why Avid as always been use in media and films. Btw, Avid Free DV was the first free editor app from them. The full version of Media Composer is also WAY WAY more format compatible and powerfull. The full screen can also be full quality and on an other screen as what we call the "client monitor".

      Right click on "Computer " or "This PC" or "My Computer" of whatever it is called on your desktop, and bring up the properties menu. From there you should be able to seee your RAM (and if you have more than 4GB of RAM, you must have a 64 bit OS).

    Hi Christopher, thanks for raising awareness of this Avid initiative. I'll also be very interested to see your presentation of Resolve 14. Reading the comments I'm left wondering why people don't look things up for themselves, and then pass their findings on, instead of expecting you to do it for them, but each to their own, I guess. From whatI've read Avid has a steep learning curve and I suspect it is used in the film industry over Adobe as the valuable interlectual property does not live in the cloud. I think I will take up your suggestion and experiment with Avid First. Nicely named, eh? Cheers. Bob.

  • @XSpImmaLion
    @XSpImmaLion 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's very interesting and nice of Avid to put out a free version... but it's pretty limited too. :P
    Seems they've been switching models to match Premiere Pro and Final Cut X...
    Thanks for sharing Chris!
    I kinda hate doing transcoding, but oh well. Will give it a try later on.
    Of the free video editors I've tested so far the one I liked the most was Kdenlive, despite it's bugs. Even made some chroma key stuff, but the timeline got all confused at some point losing links and linking to the wrong sources... it has a good selection of compatible codecs though.
    The one in Blender is useable but kinda awkward, Resolve also has some file format limitations (particularly mp3 files), and then I think I tried a whole bunch of older stuff that just didn't work out, like Lightworks.
    Of course, this will vary with needs and experience... I learned editing with Sony Vegas and worked mostly with Premiere Pro/After Effects, dabbled a bit with Final Cut Pro 7.
    I think the worst problem with Avid is that if you ever decide to go pro, it can get expensive as hell. Yes, it's industry grade software, lots of Hollywood studios go for it, it's the one major NLE in the market which Hollywood studios go for, it's a plus to know how to deal with it for your curriculum and all that... but it's targeted and priced for the professional market, something to keep in mind. I'd love to have editing studio suites with switching boards and all that, but I'm only a hobbist at this point. xD
    If I was ever to go back to commercial packages... well, it's around 20 bucks a month if you pay for the yearly subscription for Premiere Pro CC, Avid Media Composer is more towards 50 bucks a month. It ends up being highly dependant on where you are working at, so there's that... but since I have no aspirations to work in Hollywood studios, for the rest of the market it's all entirely either Adobe or Final Cut.

      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this. Note that the latest version of DaVinci Resolve (14) can import mp3 files. :)

    Hello Christopher, it's my first time commenting. I have to start with my enjoyment from the channel. You do a stellar job in providing interesting, accurate and relevant content on a regular basis all while making it look effortless. Being in IT for nearly (OMG) 33 years and now retired, as you are all too well aware the section of the market you choose to focus upon moves at a mile a minute, I am always impressed with seldom seeing you doing reports on technology that doesn't make it beyond the initial public interest and ultimately later crash and burn.
    Anyway, I digress being a musician at heart, along with many of us in the trade, I would love to see your take on a DAW or Digital Audio Workstation. There are many of these with the sidekick plugins that create instruments or effects upon instrument sounds recorded. Of these, there are free and not free versions. If you choose to endeavor, you'll get plenty of suggestions. Might help you get over that 200k subscriber mark!
    Regardless, I will keep watching, love the channel! Cheers from Peter in Connecticut, US

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This I do not know. The FAQ describes the target audience here: avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/faq/Who-is-Media-Composer-First-designed-for I have never come across anything to say that it cannot be used commercially -- eg there is nothing in the comparison here: www.avid.com/media-composer-first/comparison So I think it is fairly safe to assume that commercial use is OK.

      The interface and workflow are exactly the same. You are limited by the number of video tracks and output formats, but this is basically just like pro Avid, but with a lot of additional functions removed. If you know Avid, you will have no issues using this. And if you don't know Avid, using this will teach you how to edit using Avid, no problem.

      The limit is four video tracks -- you can have as many video files as you like. There is a consensus emerging here already -- sticking with DaVinci Resolve! :) But this Avid release may force others -- eg Adobe -- to launch a free editor . . .

I have seen much in the media here in the US about the development of AI, in particular, a system IBM has called Watson. It seems that doctors are using Watson to learn as much about medical developments and possible research trials as possible. It is even able to suggest treatment alternatives, very amazing!!!! I would like to know your thoughts on this and where it is all going. I know you probably have been covering this subject for years, the recent write ups on Watson has really gotten my attention for the first time.
    Thank you sir!
    Rich

      I Rich. I am indeed icreasingly into AI, and shared a stage with a Microsoft "Technology Evangelist" talking about it at a conference not that long ago. I did a video on cloud AI fairly recently too: th-cam.com/video/iv7_Bf7TGOQ/w-d-xo.html And my 13th book -- due out in late September has the subtitle "The Future of Computing, Robots and AI" (the title is not public yet!). A key message in the book is that the future of computing is the future of AI. There will be several videos on the channel linked to the book from September, and also much free content from the book on ExplainingComputers.com. So keep watching this space!

      It is a not a/the trial version -- it is a cut-down version of Avid (though not that cut down) that you can use for free indefinitely.

      @@ExplainingComputers Thanks for your info man. I just want to make sure before starting my project because the official website of avid said strictly not supported on intel i5 processors.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then this may be the case -- Avid are clearly the gospel info on this! :) But I find that very, very surprising that is would not run on an i5, so my guess is that it would run. Also note that that is a big difference, esp with Avid, between will not run, and not supported by Avid, as Avid have this whole "certified hardware" thing. And if you do not have to run Avid, go for DaVinci Resolve, also free, and far more capable. And will certainly run on your hardware. :)

    • @ExplainingComputers

      Possibly. It depends on the format used on a GoPro, and I don't know what that is.

      I’ve used the full version of Avid for a lot of GoPro videos. GoPro cameras generally shoot h.264, so as long as you import instead of link, you’ll be good.

      Adobe Premiere is a very popular video editor, including in education, and has been for a long time. But it has never been the most common program used in the industry.

    Would someone please direct me to some editing software for beginners. I just want to make simple videos. The easier the better. As long as I can edit out any curse words and get it to TH-cam I am happy. I don't like go pro quick...and they no longer support go pro studio. I tried light works and had problems figuring it out.

    The product requires to allow incoming network connections enabled. For me personally that's not going to happen. If you do not allow incoming network connections the app will not launch. Avid you can keep your App.

    I like that there are some okay free barebones video editing suites now. With some work to Vulcan, and some effort put into a Linux compatible video editor with some more advanced features we can be rid of Microsoft once and for all.
