  • Many well known and beloved creators have recently made videos about leaving TH-cam or taking an extended break to some degree. As some have stated themselves, I agree that it's overdue for many. Last year alone was tough for everyone. But I think it's also just a small part of something bigger. Something, hopefully, better. I want to appreciate the path carved out by the pioneers and recognize the importance of work-life balance. I believe, that all of us are on the road to where there is no difference between the two. Living your life in the fullest expression of yourself should be the best work you can do for others - and it's up to the next generation to take it a step further.

    The biggest thing from this was:
    - Running a business is a whole new level of anxiety (but doable)
    - work to know yourself
    - keep on trying, creating, failing, and doing it again but better
    - Don’t be hard on yourself during these trying times

    It feels like a natural progression. When we start working a new job we are unsure of ourselves and are anchored in the new experience. Once we mature in the job and gain confidence we realize that there are other places that we can use our skills and experience, and change jobs. Content creators are simply maturing and broadening their horizons.

    Ive come to the conclusion that being a content creater as a job may not be it for me. Lol
    I tried for a long time to try to make it somewhere. I've been selling my art since 2017. I ended up severely burnt out after 2021, and struggled through 2022. So i took most of 2023 off and I'm trying to fall in love with art again.

    I feel ya, I kept uploading artwork online, and follower expected me to upload it. Came to a point that I realized " I was kept catching up the uploading schedule and it takes up a lot of my time. I can't live in this way forever, or else I would have no time for growth" then I stop making consistent upload and back to a more relaxing upload schedule. It's difficult because followers keep asking me where I have been.

    "A more even distribution of wealth" because of a technology that is leeching off of artists' efforts and is cutting many, especially the most disadvantaged, artists out of the industry? That's genuinely such a hurtful take to those of us who's had our work and chance of a career taken away. I hope I've misunderstood, but I really don't see how there's anything exciting about that.

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I understand your viewpoint, lots of artists are feeling and experiencing being discarded due to these advanced algorithms and learning models. But this is life and it happens every few years. There were so many jobs before ours that were "taken" and yet people still find a way to make an income. However, I think if you look a bit further ahead you'll see what I mean. Look at MKBHD's or VidIQ's new videos on AI generated video. In just one year, it has jumped to an insane quality level. Not even a modern AAA studio will be able to compete with where ai will be in a few years if they don't adapt. Artists need to recognize the shift to become more independent and self sufficient. It's time to stop relying on these platforms milking us for our content and bleeding us dry. I used AI as a partner to help me design a course in just a few months. In 30-50 years teens will be able to make feature length animations thanks to AI. I could be wrong too, but I choose to focus on where one can take advantage of the situation rather than be defeated by it.

    • @SylvesterLazarus
      @SylvesterLazarus 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ergojosh I honestly claim that this is another example of someone having the preconceived notion that technology is inherently able to fix the issues of the human species instead of amplifying them. You're talking about individual people using tech to their own advantage and will make entire studios go out of business as if there was a future in which everyone can access those pieces of tech instead of just the wealthiest corporations. My prediction is that within the next 5 to 10 years we'll see video cards and processors running on a credit system once people get too much into using AI on them, so the manufacturers can cash in on it, then soon after +90% of online platforms are going to make all their content themselves for the consumers instead of paying revenue to the independent creators.
      Once making anything with AI will be possible, the money corporations can make will be in hosting and distributing them instead of creating them. People will soon need to realize that every new piece of tech can only serve one purpose, and it's to make the wealth distribution even more uneven and I'll go ahead and claim that when you're saying "taking advantage of it", that's much more like being complacent and building an even deeper dependency on the establishment.

    • @MrOudeni
      @MrOudeni 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@ergojosh So because it benefits you the mass theft and exploitation is OK? AI is made for the privileged, by the privileged. The AAA studios will just follow suit, they've never cared about anything but profits anyway. Meanwhile the main people being harmed are the ones who were already struggling because of various factors and who now have to apparently just accept their hard work is helping line other people's pockets. Artists aren't being independent and self sufficient if they're using exploitative tech, they're depending on the exploitation of their peers for their benefit.

    Reeeeally wise words. I've been thinking about Audra Auclair lately and why she stopped uploading videos. Now I get it, in a deep way, I understand why, and honestly I prefer good, nurturing, nice videos not so often, that weekly videos from an artist that's burnt out and depressed or anxious.

    • @artbyinky
      @artbyinky 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that last bit is why I had to stop watching some artists. I only watch the ones with healthy balances now. The one I stopped watching I used to love, but it’s so beyond obvious she’s burned out and just ignores it… she uploads full length videos weekly one to her personal vlog and the other to her business art one and her art no longer has the same soul it used to. It feels just like generic designs to sell a product now and it makes me sad. She’s working on her down time, working on her vacation time and it’s to a point where she gets neck and back pain after working for a half hour… she also looks incredibly exhausted and drained, so I doubt she’s sleeping and will tell the camera this is just what we artists have to do! And I’m like no it is not!
      it’s just chaotic to me and when people have told her to hire an editor, take a break, hire temp help or whatever she gets really snarky about it. Like girl, you have an addiction to work and being busy. I get this is your livelihood, but it won’t be when you seriously break emotionally or end up needed surgery for your shoulder. None of that is healthy and I don’t want to support it at all.

The content is lack luster and the thumbnails have become lazy clickbait. Do we need anymore taste testing old food/ mre videos? Or unboxing videos? Or those damn reaction videos?
      I think in someways TH-cam has gotten better, but overall the internet is in every aspect of our lives that there’s this pressure for us to monetize and share every aspect. When we don’t and shouldn’t be doing any of that. There’s still plenty of wonderful creatives on here, but you won’t find that on the Home Screen usually lol.

    I realised what your saying about everyone just out here winging it. The reason for that I think is because of limits of knowledge. Also with the fact that what separates us from the greatest in art, maths and science is experience and training, not that they are made of something special. That being true we can see that the structures in place that seem so official were put into place by people just as fallible as we know ourselves to be.

    TH-cam is heavily censoring speak. Even IF you watch your language youtube will dem. your channel or video. But youtube will still make money off of peoples work.
    Combined with the AI Spam channels that are being promoted by youtubes algo.
    Why even bother creating hard work content anymore if you just can let AI create videos for you and you even earn money from said non-put-in-work videos?
    Especially in the art community. I see smaller channels with insanely well drawn art getting pushed out by ai generative channels.
    Older channels (OG) have to play a new game and debunk AI channels. While also getting much less views and being promoted less.
    Interaction of people with the videos is lower than ever. People like videos less (it takes one click to give a like, too much work).
    They don't share the video (click the share link, even if you don't. It tells the algo that the video is worth sharing).
    But older people are being pushed out if they don't give up their original idea of why they wanted to create their channel.
    A few are lucky to be able to keep going, but that are most people with normal jobs as well in real life.
    It's sad but i remember the quote.
    "Don't be sad because it's over, be happy because it happened."

      I see what you are saying. It is true, especially with shorts that the demand for more clickbaity low effort content. I lot of people stop creating content because the YT algo has been built to only promote content creator's they approve of. Therefore, no matter how good your content, if YT decides to shadowban or simply not promote your video's, you'll never be seen. My corner of content has a single focus and a large untapped community, but my video's are lost in a sea of AI generated video's, which YT promote's ahead of mine.
    Luckily I make content regardless. It's fun.

    Great video dude. Only thing I’d add to the ai bit is this. Yes, we’ll get to a point where 3-4 people will be able to make high production level projects in a relatively short period of time, but it will come at the cost of the process itself. The better the technology gets, the more it will be capable of doing, the more we will allow it do. There will be a future where the average person will be able to create their own piece of art or entertainment with a simple thought. Being a “great artist” will eventually be a proverbial item that u purchase at a retail store. So in a way, we are indeed “selling our soul” lol.

      " There will be a future where the average person will be able to create their own piece of art or entertainment with a simple thought. " Idk if you even realize how profound this statement is. In reality, we already are imho. It's just how our brains perceive the time in-between each thought. I also think thats the point where everything loops around again in infinity. And I love the last thing you said too! Selling your soul....can actually be seen in a positive light. I think the process can still be enjoyable, just different. Similar to how digital art already removes so many steps within the process of traditional painting. Shining the unique light that resonates from each soul is the most valuable thing you can offer to anyone. I still disagree that being a great artist will be perverted. The stakes just continue to rise, along with what people want to see. AI still can't generate the type of work I make because of its censorship and limited "understanding" of what it is doing.

    I see AI as lazy. It’s for people who don’t want to do the work and hone their skills. Humans are meant to be good at different things. If everyone uses AI to create art, then you are eliminating artists. You are creating robots.

      But on the other hand, AI is enabling people who never could become artists before. I personally know two people who have disabilities who always wanted to make art and could not because of their disabilities. Now they can. Would they rather be able to make it traditionally? Of course. But at least AI has given them that creative outlet.

    It is hard to build a reliable income online, especially when you tie it to what you love to do. Obviously you want to fund the thing you love so that it can be successful- but I don't think that it will help the heart of that thing thrive. I think that the world is just too fast and it doesn't merge well with the creative spirit. People are realizing what they have to do to live the life they want to live and the steps they need to take towards that for themselves. I appreciate your optimism of the future, and to focus on doing what inspires you when you wake up in the morning.I've got that written down on my desk. It's made a huge difference for me. I feel like one huge weight on my shoulders in terms of creating art has been hindered by this feeling that the world is too full and fast paced for my art to exist in it. So instead of seeing the world with my art in it, I'll see a world within my art that exists on its own. We don't have to follow the world's vision, we must, and are fully capable of following our own.

      Stay focused on discovering who you are. As someone over a decade ahead of you trust me-dont get distracted by what's going on around you and waste time. Don't stay under a rock (unless you really want to) look at what ends up in front of you and take note of what you like, what excites you, and keep following that path. You'll find your way, but you have to let go of having a guarantee or else you'll just be swept up in the masses. Having a unique Identity is going to be the most valuable thing in the next few years and onward.

    TH-cam creators veering into making content they want rather keeping up with what makes the channel financially stable has been an amazing movement. It's like watching the age of TH-cam Poop for the first time where people just went wild with videos and there was something surprising or memorable in every one. For a long time, we entered the dark ages where all youtubers in a genre would post the same exact content with minimal differences like how to use procreate, which ipad is right for you, how to properly cycle a fish tank, let's all unbox this newest huion tablet, 10001 reasons to not add a common pleco to your fish tank, let's paint with bargain bin art supplies, etc. I've gotten sick of just watching it all, I can imagine youtubers being tired of making it.
    When a youtuber who, for years, made his channel about showing off NYC luxury apartments nobody can afford shift from showing off those apartments to filming deep dives into NYC's housing crisis and the corruptions that contribute to it, you know the times have changed.

    Although I appreciate the positivity and such about having an art career, when it comes to AI usage I think you are massively underestimating the stranglehold that big corporations have on these industries, as well as how easily hundreds of billions of dollars can be used to bully smaller companies or devs. And that's on top of the already unethical way in which AI has acquired their databases. In order for AI to give us small time creatives a real advantage we need ethical collection of data, ethical retention of data both with the AI and in the corporations that will undoubtedly be using said AI, and realistic usage models that doesn't provide advantages for wealthier clients. Unfortunately for us the AI industry doesn't want to do any of these because they would find less benefit in them.

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also think it's easy to OVER estimate the power industries have. Look at what happened to TV and news channels. Newspapers. The tech industry just cut hundreds of thousands of jobs they realized they didn't need. Ai can only create based off of what's already popular, and there isn't much out there to copy from that isn't similar. Very soon you will see anything that is AI generated will have the same look and taste to it. Theres SO much content that isn't online or deeply buried by popular trends. I am completely on board with the high level of criticism and management of AI and the ethics, but it does nothing to focus on the negative. Regardless of ethics, AI will never be able to create diverse content until it actually becomes "Artificial Intelligence" and starts to think for itself. We aren't there yet, all of this is just advanced machine learning.

    • @mattg6106
      @mattg6106 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ergojosh the problem is that the much of the tech industry, AI companies especially, cater their products to the large corporations in order to profit. And the large corporations themselves focus more on cost-cutting efficiency than creativity. The fact that AI generates similarly styled imagery is of no consequence when that style is the status quo these companies perpetuate with their current profit-first ideologies. And when the actual artists out there create something different and interesting it will just end up feeding the data sets as well, if we allow it. Even with regulations some will still probably get through as many of these companies know they will gain more than they will pay in fines, assuming they are caught.

    Disagree on that AI stuff. Even if a smaller group of people can produce extremely high level stuff, the same tools are available for the big corporations as well. And unlike the smaller creators, they have a lot of capital they can use to invest into advertisement and so on. There will be outliers of course. We are just seeing the inevitable death of art as an industry. It might be a slow or quick process, dunno.

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd bet money but I'm not a gambler. I think it's time we stop overestimating the power of these corps. We're all just people. I do think that there are going to be some outliers like Apple that take their time and find a way to incorporate AI to level up even more. But corporations are slow and extremely risk averse by nature. That will always be a weakness.
