This is the next art app that's actually worth downloading: Cara.

- Sorry Jingna & Cara team... but I hope the app keeps blowing up and racks up server costs into the millions xD I think there is something really profound that this app is not only doing extremely well so quickly, but it was birthed from someone who has been involved in the community at our level. Someone who has contributed to the progress of Artistic and Creative legislation. I love that so much of the art community at every corner is involved in this and giving it a chance. I wanted to contribute my part to help keep the momentum going. We shape not only the physical world we live in, but the online landscape as well. I encourage everyone to make a stand today and demand the future you want without anyone else's permission.

I think the good thing about Cara is it’s great for networking with artists if you’re looking for a job in the industry. It’s very slow right now but it’s very new.
Whats crazy is RIOT themselves are now using it!! It's actually getting really big industry wise!
They actually have a jobs board with posting from big companies. Plus, art directors and art industry folks are joining! Just because a community is for artists, doesn't mean there isn't opportunity! Of course, its still very new, but Cara is clearly focused on supporting human artists in various forms.
@@ennuiwolf Exactly! I saw RIOT themselves posting on Cara !
I wish more companies would go there. So far I've seen only job postings from USA and Canada. On Artstation there's many more, so maybe some of them will join Cara too.
@@MagdaLenaS2312 I was pleasantly surprised to find listings from Indian companies too! It'll be slow, but it'll happen. The art industry still values human made art!
been on Cara for like 3 days and could`n feel better, I found at least 40 new awesome artists to follow an counting.

I haven't seen that joke in years
7:22 people aren't leaving so their art isn't being used for AI, a lot of people understand that the damage has already been done. I think it's more so the principle of the lack of transparency and people wanting to protest the misuse of their work by leaving the platform. Even tho I don't think this will affect insta immediately but it will definitely damage it's reputation and I do believe in the long run insta will lose the art community as a whole if it continues down this path.
that plus not giving them a chance to train on any new stuff that artist will make. It's def a bigger impact if many ppl delete their accounts, than just not posting anymore.
There's the brouhaha with Adobe and AI.

Please note Cara is run by a very small team. If possible please consider donating to their coffee link if possible. As of this writing the servers is costing them around 100k USD per week!
One thing I’ve noticed about Cara is it’s really hard to find artists who are less experienced, which makes it hard to network and find community if you yourself are inexperienced. Everyone on there that I see is a professional and highly skilled artist, which leads to a lot of gorgeous art on my feed, but it’s disheartening when you can’t find anyone even close to your skill level. I wish there was more discoverability of smaller creators, hopefully they will have the opportunity to add that in the future.
Honestly I agree with you 100% here…I REALLY hope it changes. So far, I like that they do sole basic challenges instead of the HUGE contests held on Artstation. I think this is going to be absolutely key for its success.
I just started learning how to do art not too long ago. I haven't signed up for it yet. I can be the worst artist on there lol
@@PinaPirata You and me together!
I'm struggling to find fellow photographers who ain't mega talented pros on there.
Give it time, and be a forerunner. If everyone who isn’t a professional are feeling like you and not joining and posting it won’t grow to include a diverse range of artists.
I've never been on Insragram because never have I ever trusted Facebook or Meta. My mom did use it to display her work, and she was worried about the whole instagram AI thing. She also told me about Cara. Looking at this video and the comments I think I'll take a look at it.
However I'm starting to get tired to have all these accounts in different websites, and especially keeping up with all of them. The more I look at art on social media, the less impact the art pieces have on me and I just hit the like button and scroll. I don't think art is supposed to be that way and it feels we're (at least I am) overconsuming art just because "image pretty". It's just like any other type of post of tiktok that make you addicted to scrolling...
Plus at the end of the day I feel bad for not drawing and posting online as much as I'd like, be it for progressing my skills or getting exposure.
sorry for the rant
Nah, I agree with you.
You're completely right, it's exhausting and even more so now that everyone pushes you to sign up to everything and the FOMO turns into precieved lost profits
All of what you’ve said is just so true. I also feel like my appreciation for art has drained due to the speed of social media. I also end up feeling bad for not making art at the end of the day.
Yeah at this point I'm just tired of social media in general. It starting to feel like a repeating pattern at this point.
I feel the same lol(although I am on Instagram but the whole liking art and then scrolling is so me right now)
Babe wake up another Cara video dropped! Fr tho I hope this app is actually worth the hype
Right?!? lmao I had to hop on the train ez views gg. 😎
Just thefact thts it's something attempting to do something about all that's happening is worth looking into. Complaining is great but action is better
Your videos and perspective on art and society in general are always so refreshing! It's nice to be reminded that there are individuals who see what's going on and can be so hopeful and critical at the same time without making anyone upset. And I ALWAYS want to draw after watching your videos! haha. On a side note, your work is getting so good lately- insane stuff!!! the details!!
Thank you so much! Im glad to hear this, and yeah I feel sometimes Ive gotta be the voice of reason to even out the spicy salty palate of youtube sometimes, even if its just a little.
I love Cara it gave me something that I craved for a long time. A site for artists without filler (ads, ai art, photos of people I don't know, random videos). I got from Cara what I need- art by real people.
I think the main problem is Cara is not ready to handle this many people, they are a small team with a small budget and they are already in thousands of debt.
the good thing tho is how with that sudden hype, there will be more ppl willing to support them 💸 so they could find/hire more ppl to work with them.
I just wish they'd have some more funding sites, as Buy me a Coffee accepts only card payments. And plenty of folks willing to support them don't have those :/
So support them.
They are a new app literally less than a year old. No platform would be ready for such an explosion.
I hate seeing comments like this. Instead of talking about what they cant or “shouldn’t” be able to do encourage people to donate to the team to help them launch successfully. If even half the users donated $5 theyd be able to pay off the debt. $5. Whats the excuse if we all hate how the social media giants like Meta,Google,Adobe are literally stealing artists work w/o compensation. Youd submit to that abuse because $5 is too much????
If the answer is No then why make it a point of focus????

@@isbakernationThere are plenty of reasons to not have a card.
Unlike a lot of the other up and coming social media sites for arists, I feel like Cara has actually gathered impressive traction recently, and I can see it replacing something like DeviantArt if it keeps up. An actual hub for artists again would be so awesome
Their really hasn't been a great English platform by artists for artists since DA left. Artstation and some fediverse instances existed, but they either didn't have the traction or didn't fill out the role of an 'artist community' type vibe. Idk if Cara will fix this, but it's promising.
I recently started my TH-cam channel (for the third time, hopefully third times the charm) and I recently joined Cara, and I love it. I still want to figure out how to sell my artwork. But for now I just really want to share my work and connect with other artists. I want to express myself and make my dream projects. Currently working on a coloring book. Can’t wait to see how TH-cam and Cara will go for me.

I just joined Cara this week. I ADORE it. It fills me with hope and joy, and people are so kind and willing to network. This is the change the art world needed, I think.
One thing not mentioned enough here is why meta are really doing this
As a computer scientist and a software engineer of 12 years, as well as an aspiring artist. I am massively anti AI ( I’m also trying to get out of IT development it’s genuinely soul crushing 😂)
However it has a huge flaw , AI gets stupider over time yes it’s in a boom now but it is degenerative. To simplify ( drastically simplify) if you have an ai that generates a number between 1-10 and every time an answer is selected it is added back into that list as another possibility. So in this example the first time it throws out a number there’s a 1 in ten chance it comes out. If you say yes that selection is correct it then feeds that answer back into the list of potential answers. So say you selected the number 3 now that list has 11 entry’s but 3 is in there twice meaning the odds of getting a 3 is 2 in 11 versus the others being now 1 in 11. Now the more this happens the more chance of same number coming up for everyone is likely
This is why you see a lot of repetition in Ai generated anything
Meta is introducing this policy to tackle that flaw in AI , it needs a constant stream of new images to keep it from degenerating. In order for AI to evolve it needs a steady stream of new unique non AI generated images
If your posts belong to meta ( now I don’t know about this bit) but there’s nothing stopping them from distributing this new data bank that’s constantly fed user unique info to companies. It’s a highly immoral way of getting around a problematic and fundamental flaw in computers as a whole l. Computers cannot make a decision ,humans do we either write a bit of code to say this is the right solution or in the case of creativity we are provided potential answers and we in the moment have to say this is right.
They cannot learn themselves. I would strongly encourage stop posting to meta based platforms for this reason entirely.
This was an interesting read, thank you.
Again some excellent thoughts. My feelings are very similar.
What Cara so far has brought me is the communication I have wanted with fellow artists. It’s literally that simple. If before on social media it had felt to me like I was in a crowded convention center trying to find specific people, now it feels as if they are right beside me in a comfortable room. In the past few days, I have talked with several folks about their sculpting process, which is wonderful! Just looking at some of their work sets a new benchmark for me to work towards in my own craft and process.
It is a platform where I have felt comfortable being able to make comments on artwork and start conversations with people I have never met before. That is a great feeling of connection.
I am indeed hoping that they may continue to be a space where I can discuss artwork and the making thereof.
I think i clicked on this because Cara Delevigne but i am intrigued to look at Cara the app now though. i consider myself a stifled artist. the stress of life and trying to do it right killed my art
I think most of us know instagram already has all our images. Deleting them is more about the principle of it. A form of protest in the way we can. If you want to replace us with ai, all you get is ai. There will be no more human art or imagery on your platform for the users that remain because we removed it.
This. I just deleted my 3 art posts. :/
So idc if they have my images… having everyone mass delete stuff will send a message.
@@zephyrias Yup! And I still understand why the bigger artists aren't leaving, but even my favorite artist, Ron Koza, dipped off the platform and he's pretty big himself. It's not about logistics. It's about the message, like you said.
I also deleted all my stuff. I'm SO glad I'm not into social media enough to post everything, my heart breaks for everyone whose whole portfolio got stolen.
What really bothers me is that social media sites control what Artists can and can't make, whether you like it or not we're all bound by their rules and tastes and we're adjusting and tailoring our Art works and ideas accordingly.

It's been there for over a year... It's a small team still growing the app, so give them time...
And considering how things are going on many other socials, this one might actually become much bigger.
@@MagdaLenaS2312yeah but how many NONARTISTS are on the platform? It doesn’t matter how many artists join it if all there is is artists.
@@ninja_tony Artists need interaction with other artists. It could be for criticism, it could be for finding friends, or just simply look at art and gain inspiration or motivation at the comfort of your own home. Museums exist, but there are people who don't like to go outside and can feel uncomfortable. I personally don't but there are examples out there, like Christian Scott Sava. Most social media isn't focused and broad. This makes it difficult and kind of a chore to sift through the endless content. Obviously, not so great to advertise yourself to the general audience, however that doesn't have to be the goal of this platform.
@@ninja_tony how many nonartists are on Artstation or Behance? How many of them are on Devianart? For regular ppl to join they need to be lured by the artists they like first.
@@ninja_tonythat was never an issue for Deviant Art and Deviant Art was one of the biggest art medias out there. It’s downfall was when it uses art in its platform for AI
Wonderful video!! I really liked your point around the 5 minute mark about encouraging artists to share about their process more, not only to potentially confuse AI (heh heh) but also appreciate the value of the journey rather than just the destination.
Cara isn't the first app to promise utopia, I strongly discourage anyone that's platform jumping. Esp deleting big accounts, majority of audiences won't sign up to another social media just for art. I only see other artists be dedicated enough to do it😅
I know I'm being very negative, and I hope that I'm wrong and we can finally have a space for art. But the biggest concern is actually flagging or reporting art as AI. There will be many false reports and some that will eventually slip past the cracks, I see this as a bad set up to a joke and I really hope creatives aren't the butt of it, as we so often made to be in situations like these
Very thoughtful discussion Josh! I think the craving for community that all of society is seeking right now really impacts what our actions as fellow artists, and you make excellent points on how it's so important for us to embrace things that tighten our bonds.
Being lost is a part of life (something I'm still struggle to be comfortable with haha) so thank you for your hopefulness and support! ❤

First of all, I would like to say that your portrait sketches here look amazing they really capture her likeness. I never heard of Cara, but I will check it out due to
Your video post. You're right that a lot has changed in such a short time with the advent of the internet, but I feel (as a traditional artist) not all for the better, now many of us don't really create physical pieces of our artistic expressions like before. Yet, most of it now is in the Digital sphere where it can be viewed by billion but at the same time used, manipulated, copied, and now even stolen by Artificial intelligence as fragmented pieces of Digital data for others to use without our knowledge, but to be honest I guess that was inevitable. It's funny to hear your story about deviantAR; because this was my experience as well, it took forever for people to like or even comment on your post, making it feel like no one was interested. Now it looks like no one is actually drawing or creating art but using AI so much that you can't even tell what's real art sometimes and what's AI generated.
I disagree with the why everyone is on social media i want just a platform where i can use it as a portfolio nothing else , i am not for attention. but i agree why most of it do.
Guess me being chickenshit about posting my work on social media has secretly been a blessing? Plus I am really happy I was able to get my real name as a handle on Cara
I was just thinking the same thing
Abobe is doing the same sht as instagram, except they're also going after everything you keep private, including files on your device. Microsoft wants to do the same with recording everything you do on your computer (they say those will be stored locally, but that's how it always starts).
These companies can't just wake up and decide to mine their customers just because the law only covers overt theft. Using a product shouldn't entail handing over every bit of data associated with its use. Especially, when it's used to render its users obsolete.
Ugh what…. 😭 microsoft noo… there better be a way to opt out. Theres loads of ppl who use windows computers for work. Those have sensitive data and info on clients. :/
At the beginning of this year I decided to step back Twitter, the only social media site I use, even though I had started to post my art and follow artists but it became something else... something unhealthy... Used up too much time too. Since then Ive learned watercolor and I love it! Its something I always wanted to learn but keep falling short. I only had the time because I stepped back from Twitter. My girlfriend says Ive been in a better mood too. I was taking in too much negativity! All of the AI junk can be depressing!
seriously the dark background on Cara (at least the website i have not used the app) is such a big plus. Seriosuly white backgrounds are just disorienting..
Please, don't be naive, sir. The old people who make the laws know EXACTLY how powerful the Internet is and they know EXACTLY what they are doing to creatives by allowing big tech companies and AI to work the way they do. The things that are happening are by DESIGN and are intentionally malicious and maliciously intentional.
in many places they are forcing you to submit evidence or your request won't be accepted. i still plan on using it neverless
I'm sure Cara will work out just as well as every other Social Media platform with no financial plan or funding.
Haven't posted anything myself yet, but already following you on it 😁
"at least seeing other people's likes are still a thing on twitter..." oh no you jinxed it
I saw a lot of AI bros on Reddit who is almost choking on their own spit in delight while watching Jingna Zhang's posts about how much money it consumes to run servers (she shared emails recently with the number ~90000$ in it). Like "ooohh yeaaaah cara is done already". Why the hell? How Cara's existence is affecting this young and not so young persons? Does it mean that they will never be able to scrap current AiStation or whatever they want? Nah, artists just want place for themselves - and it pisses AI bross off.
They also try to spread the rumors about gray goals of Cara to scrap artworks, too, but I still don't understand what's the point of it. Comparing to Meta, it's small like a grain of sand comparising to the whole beach. Isn't it easier to just grab what is already online? What's the point for Jingna to risk her reputation? So many questions.
They went for the wrong network architecture model(client-server), it's only suitable for business models rooted in the corporate business model.
They should have gone for a peer-to-peer(P2P) model.
I don't post art anywhere, or use IG much. but if I were to start Cara would be my first to start uploading somewhere.
Countdown to Tencent acquiring Cara
they are in 90k worth of debt from running the servers alone.
yep. That's the only temporary problem I see...I was thinking maybe about a funding campaign or something robust, because that's big big money, and it would be a shame that it ends because of not having servers.

I left instagram personally.
I don't post for the grind, or I don't make money out of the content I post. So, really, I just want to be in a community that feels safe. Cara gives that.
I have been thinking of leaving instagram since the reels push, actually. So when I saw that meta decided to remove the opt-out option, it really was a cataclysm of elements that made me go away.
I'm not making a living out of this, so it was easy to just quit right on the spot.
I know I'm lucky to be able to make this decision, but im glad I have done so. Instagram started to feel like brain rot. Cara is like a breath of fresh air, it is so nice.
Yes, I'm staying on meta because the locals in my area use it more. I am on cara also.
You have a lovely eye for chiaroscuro.
I totally agree with your standpoint on how we artists should view AI from a different perspective. As artists, we excel in creating art and contributing unique perspectives and beauty to the world. While contemplating how to integrate AI into our practice, consistently sharing our artwork on various platforms, both online and offline, not only influences new artists-just as certain artists' works have profoundly inspired each of us-but also shapes AI models positively, enriching and broadening aesthetics.
I have a question! The part with the example of the dog in the photo. If we post more process photos like that. Won’t it just train the ai to get around that? Whatever we use to complicate the image, if we’re adding more sources for the “weak spots” of AI, wont that just make it more well rounded?
There is some evidence that suggests that glazer work merely improves the Ai.
At this moment night shade and glaze are basically essential oils trying to cure a cancer.
I don’t care if they scraped it already. I don’t want them doing it going forward. I am allowed to choose. I don’t have to feed Ai if I don’t want to. Forcing us is the problem. If someone wants to make money doing art, they can if they find a way. Do what YOU want.
Cara feels very much like old era facebook, when people used to post their random art and just wait for people to interact
. Genuinely feels amazing
I was already frustrated with Instagram before AI, so there's really not a lot that's keeping me there
Hope Cara can get all the support it needs to thrive!
The thing with ai from a code perspective. I was telling my dad this is you can't code the bigger picture. The bigger picture is nuance. The bigger picture is consciousness. Idk exactly how to word this but the reason ai art has that flat feeling is because of that. It's mimicking patterns without seeing the bigger picture of those patterns. And with some artists the literaly patterns in our work can be so miniscule which can lead to an even more complex overall image not from seeing the detail but the idea the detail is even there to begin with. That doesnt even really explain what im tryna say id have to show but well the example in this video shows it pretty well on the surface.
3:16 Drawing from Cara and Raya reference images and getting Pocahontas is a wild XD
I wasn't so sure about Cara but it seems like it's a really comforting atmosphere for creatives ^^ Maybe I'll make an account too~
I definitely downloaded the app and made an account
I don’t think I’d delete my account but definitely lessen my usage and opt out of them scraping anymore of my stuff (even though the damage is already done)
I’m excited to start anew on a new app and be inspired by other artists.
Does Cara know you're using AI? Because the entire point of the platform is anti-AI.
I mean, what’s even the point on doing that? Cara is now an app that is more meant for artists than to non-artists. My little audience on Twitter is made more of non-artists, people that appreciate art more or less.
Let’s get real: if you want to connect with other artists just to interact with them and they with you, fine, Cara is good for it.
But what about jobs? Commissions, freelance work or making yourself visible to studios, companies, partnerships, etc? Artstation was our way to go on those and commissions is pretty much anywhere, but mostly the ones that want commissions are non-artists that want to support the artists that they like/love and sometimes artists supporting another artists.
Right now, it seems pointless to just go to the next new social media because the ones that we use are corrupted (always were). It would be just for sharing your work more than actually make some cash of it or even living of it… I it may sound greedy, but is a valid point to think of if you really love what you do. I mean, this whole shit will never end so there’s even a point in fighting against it?
I tried to post some figure drawings this morning, but it wouldn't let me. I know they said they can't allow NSFW content now, but I thought they're not even hyper realistic or super detailed, so I figured they'd be fine.
I love the figure drawing community we have on Instagram, but it's a tough spot because of all the shadowbanning. I know Cara doesn't have the resources for moderation right now, but it's still pretty disappointing
Thats the one thing that sucks the most rn imo. I so lots of figure drawings too and have experienced the shadowbanning but hopefully they allow it soon. Could be a good opportunity for another platform/app in the future. Otherwise it looks like Patreon is the best bet there.
@@ergojosh Yeah, I hope so. Even though I'm branching out again, doing more character/creature work, figure drawing is still most of what I do. It's gotten me the most attention and connections. But Instagram hasn't been the best place for it, and it seems to be getting worse

i miss the early 2010s. back then creatives were highly respected, unfortunately i was to young at the time to make anything of value so i never got to capitalize of that.
No they weren’t.
I was born in the early two thousands. Creatives were treated as dirt as they are now.
@@Waspinmymind I'm talking about the 2010s and up to around 2022. Ppl simped for artist online.
I've been using it and I have a problem when no one ❤ the works people do.
That could backfire, what if it gives the AI a frame of reference for what looks like a good drawing Vs a bad drawing, and then it starts to bash together other people's art more effectively
I know I wont stop sharing my art on insta anytime soon. I also created a Cara, I just hope down the road they will allow figure drawing in the upcoming future I hope. I sure hope I can see this new app grow into the new hub for us artists grow within the year. I'll eventually start to reupload on Cara overtime as I learn the program little by little. But as a Artist/Coder, it's always fun to see a brand new app on the horizon though. I am hoping it will grow big in no time to push Instagram back on the ai issue eventually. One can only hope.
Josh, I always love hearing talk. :)
Oop....Twitter just made it so Likes are now private...lol
Don't forget to just appreciate other people's art and vision, it's very easy to start comparing yourself to others, and then Cara will become a nightmare in your life. Have fun, get inspired and don't take it seriously, keep moving forward on your own path.
Heard about Cara and considered supporting it on a monthly basis as the rightest obligation as an artist. Let's see where the developers and community members will drive it!
If you are an emergent artist I think Cara is for now the app to subscribe because it is new and it is quite good for networking. For the rest I use Instagram as an extension of my business card…but this doesn’t allow Meta to use my work to train its IA. I think it is time to know the problem is not AI but those big tech corporation. I think those big tech are the past and in the near future the way we use technology will be totally different and not even in the arts.
You cant opt out of Meta plan to use all your data to feed their AI though. Soo whatever you post in Instagram or facebook 'll become food for their AI, no matter you want it or not
Great video! I love your nuanced and balanced take
cara is supposed to be an alternative to artstation not instagram. It just has instagram inspired UI because thats what the community asked for. its not for the average consumer, its for professionals looking for professional work and artists looking to make commections with other artists. not to reach a huge audience to sell more merch or prints or whatever. If thats the reason you joined cara, ure out of luck.
I joined to interact with other artists and look at art to get inspired, knowing that the person on the other end is a real artist is so much more worth to me than a couple likes on instagram. (which suppresses my content anyway because i refuse to succomb to the reel hype)
that intro was hilarious
Great Birds Eye view/ grounding perspective. I like the concept of Cara, but it’s a lil heavy on illustration atm -hoping other forms of art start to show up. Fashion, furniture, irl sculpture, etc.
I'm not afraid, people are complaining about not finding their target customer on Cara, wait a little guys, trust me, while almost all real artists will be on Cara, serious customers who support real art just won't get it the choice to go to Cara, to create an account, to find them and contact them! Be patient...haha This is just the beginning! People are already annoyed by all these fake posts, not even from artists, it's just a matter of time!
This video was relaxing. Love it ❤..
I've had an IG for a while, and I was posting artwork for a bit. I knew my art wasn't amazing by any means, so I stopped. I would post day to day things. I'm drawing again, and I'm considering posting my art to cara, but the thought of artwork not being 100% safe is kind of scary to think about. I know it's a fear in the whole community. I just hope later on it won't be a fear anymore.
By what I know the only big big challenge they have is to find money to maintain the servers. Everyone migrated so fast and massively to Cara just like with Threads but personally, I think Cara is actually a good platform. Maybe if the make a Kickstarter campaign or something like that. I mean it's big money they need tho...
worth checking it out
Cara seems a lot what Ello use to be
glaze and/or nightshade your work everyone.
honestly i think i might try our Cara myself since im really tired of many other places. only tumblr has provided me with a fulfilling experience so far
that said, in regards to likes being public... no. i actually hate this feature on any platform - it makes me feel pressured to pick and choose what i'm liking and hurts my sense of data privacy, even if it isn't being shared with others. i hope they allow this feature to be private
Also the answer to my „opt out“ was that they will not be using my art for AI „moving forward“
Sounds pretty scummy to me
Just signed up on Cara, thanx for the tip!
I do agree with everything you said, josh. seriously.
Who's artwork is that at 13:14 on the left? The beetle warrior looking guy. I really love that.
Thank you for the video. ^_^ I might make an account on Cara at some point. I will say to artists that worry about not interesting OTHER artists, there are artists like me that hunt for productive artists (which is rare) that will color or animate or just fill in for a skill th hiring artist doesn't have time to do. THUS don't be disheartened if you would like Cara to eventually lead to revenue. Train and work on the niche things you are great in...or be a jack of all trades. :3
