I have a new machine similar to yours so your tutorial was quite easy to follow. I’ve not used the memory settings yet, so this is a great place to start. Thanks so much 🤩
Thank you! As a newbie this is my biggest hurdle and headache. I find myself watching the plate so closely that my fabric starts traveling away from my intended point. This is such an amazing tip. ❤
You! You have just made my sewing experience so much better!!! This legitimately changes everything!!! No more markers! No more tape! No more guess work!!! All the thank yous!!!!
I saw this a few days ago and didn't believe it could be that simple. Well I have tried it and can confirm that it works. It is a game changer indeed. We should all be shouting that on the quilters' roofs! Thank you, thank you again.
I found this invaluable for sewing doll clothes with a 1/4" seam, especially when I was sewing a curved bodice piece onto a straight piece and really needed to squeeze a line of stay stitching in there (silk satin) 😬 I'm so happy to not only understand my new electronic machine better but be a more competent seamstress as well! Thanks a million; you're a real lifesaver 🤗
I have done every one of those things you mentioned so I was eager to see what you would say...... mind blown 🤯... I have never thought to use my stitch width for straight stitches. Definitely a game changer!! Thank you!!!! 😁
I told a friend to move her needle to the right until she had ¼" from the needle and the edge of the pressure foot once. She told me that her machine doesn't do that. The next time I was at her house, I showed her how to use the stitch width button. She hadn't even kniwn what that button was for. Never opened the user manual.
A 5.6 on my Juki HZL F-300 seems to have done the trick (no 5.5 setting) thank you. I’m a beginner quilter and that 1/4 inch allowance has been so allusive. I was starting to think I just sucked at it. I don’t remember anything from Home Economics class (I’m 51) so I appreciate this tip very much!
Wow, thanks for the tip. I can’t wait to try it out. Just a suggestion for future videos, it’d be easier to see if you used contrasting thread and fabric. Thanks!
As someone who just started sewing in August of this year, and who has already figured out that you can use the width on the straight stitch to move the needle and change the seam allowance, I am feeling pretty proud of myself reading these comments.
This is why I hit subscribe. She was clear in the instructions. The camera was focused and gave a close up of where to line the presser foot up with the fabric. The instruction card was clear as to what I was looking at. If you started a school, I’m showing up online in the discussion board everyday. I have looked up online sewing schools. You can’t find an online sewing school that is completely online. I found only 1. And the other schools want you to go back to high school first by doing prerequisite classes. I would definitely support.
I have a “Vintage ” Singer Stylist 513 (the machine is a part of me, I have had it since 1972) so I don’t have access to those numbers, BUT I can move my needle left, right and center to sew zippers. Your video did provoke me to find out what the stitch widths were when I moved the needle. So yes, it was helpful, thank you!
OMG!!! I have always struggled with my seam allowance. What an amazing little hack!! I can hardly wait to try this the next time I am sewing. So glad I ran across your video. Thank you so much.
Excellent! I’ve always made clothing, but now I’m into quilting and need a 1/4 inch seam allowance. I started sewing when I was 5, with help of course. Now I’m 69 and feel stupid.. why didn’t I think of this? I’ve used a Singer , the same old Singer for 40 years. Then I got a newer Singer and now a Brother. I’ve searched all over for a solution.Thank you so much for making this needle position change so easy for me. My husband will be happy too, not having to listen to my vocal frustration. Again, Thank you so much.
This is actually a good idea. I always have trouble following the seam guides, as they are generally underneath the fabric. The 1/2" seam falls right there on the edge of the foot, which makes it so easy. I'm going to figure out how to get the others to land there also. Thanks for the tip!
My Brother has a built in 1/4 guide but I have not used it. I use a 1/4 sewing foot for it. I sew a lot of bags with faux leather, so needed this tutorial. Thanks a lot.
Ok mind blown!! Thank you so much for sharing this information! I’ve used tape, I have the quarter inch foot attachment, which I dislike, and I have the magnetic thing which is a pain! Thank you thank you!!
Well I never knew about this trick at all! I have learnt lots of tips and tricks with sewing over the past year or two from watching TH-cam and never knew about this one. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Oh my goodness. I was searching everywhere on TH-cam to find how to do a 1/4 inch stitch away from another stitch and all I could find is on quilting, I am so glad I found yours amongst the others. Wow it really is a game changer. Thank you so much for making a video on this. I truly appreciate it. I am trying to top stitch a market tote for my grandson for Christmas and it means so much to me to get it right. thank You!❤❤
I just found you this evening. My sewing machine is put away now but you can bet tomorrow am I will give this a try. I am a quilter and 1/4" is needed. Thank you from Beverly on the Treasure Coast of Florida .
Wow an absolute game changer. Didn't realise the stitch width changed the position of the needle. Thank you so much for this tip. It has helped me tremendously.
What an amazing tip! I have always struggled trying to get the correct seam allowance and you have resolved my problem in a blink of the eye, LOL. Thank you so very much.
Thank you! I hadn’t sewed in years and the machine I had used then didn’t have the ability to shift the needle position like this. I used my new machine for the first time a couple of days ago and couldn’t understand why the needle was so far left while the seam guide was on the right, totally throwing off the seam measurements. So thank you!
I'm very new to sewing, so I TH-cam seam allowance your video has made it clear what an seam allowance means. I've had my brother se600 for about a month now still learning.
Just tried this.....absolutely fantastic....many thanks ......great help for quilting seams just starting out, so should make a great difference....thanks again.
I am blown away! Most valuable thing I’ve learned on TH-cam. I’ve tried tape, etc....all frustrating. This adjustment of 5.5 for an accurate 1/4” seam allowance works perfectly! Thank you!
Thanks so much. Saved. I was using this but did not know the actual settings, never seemed to get it right. Definitely struggled with this. I will get right now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Thank you so much. I wanted a 1/4 inch foot for a Bernette machine I bought, love the machine but am having trouble buying the foot. This just solved that problem!
Maam you just changed my life omg thank you!!!!! it's crazy how many number of specific features our sewing machines were created with in mind and nothing is random but there are just hidden treasures in them I learn about all the time. I didn't know what the purpose of the width was. I guess it's not just for that purpose though I need to research that now! but yeah will be SO helpful for my 1/2 inch project that I've been struggling with.
I had purchased a new machine a few yrs ago. It was a couple of years later!! before I realized the machine had this function of moving the needle left or right. It is possible with one of the straight stitches selected, but not with a different straight stitch. I had read the owner's manual, but had somehow missed this. Very handy.
Excellent tip. Was hemming a tablecloth this weekend and used this technique. Beautiful stitching right on the edge. Another great machine feature I never used before. Thank you.
OMG! I had no idea! I have tried EVERYTHING to get 1/4” seam allowance. Thank you so much.
Subscribed for this alone! Top tip 👍😊
I have a new machine similar to yours so your tutorial was quite easy to follow. I’ve not used the memory settings yet, so this is a great place to start. Thanks so much 🤩
This video saved me so much frustration. I just bought a Brother sewing machine. I know the basics of sewing, not much else. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Wow! Game changer!! I had no idea. Thank you!!! Mind blown haha

Wow, right under my nose all these years and I never thought of it! Thanks so much for sharing! 👍😊💐

I have been doing this for years and just assumed others were too. Glad you shared the tip so that everyone could see how wonderful this trick is.
Yes, so have I. I thought everyone would know.
Same here.

That’s fantastic! I’m a blind sewer and you’re right, those magnets are ok, but this is so so good. Thank you.

@@ellenhofer3343 That's hilarious.
@@ellenhofer3343 I tried it but mine was doing the zig zag stitch instead of a straight stitch. Can't figure it out
I think mine does zig zag too when I alter width. Don't understand this at all!!!
AMAZING! All these years & this is the first time I've heard this tip. Thank you so much.

Wow! Grand idea!
Oh my soul...maybe I should've read my manual. This is priceless.
Its amazing isn't it .... wish I found this out years ago too ... hope it helps in your sewing xxx
@@TheDressmakersCloset it already has🥰. I don't understand the markings on my machine's plate but this method works great!
