Prairie Dogs: America's Meerkats - Social Life

  • This program discusses the Social Life and behavior of the 5 species of prairie dogs; the Black-tailed prairie dogs and the Mexican prairie dogs are the black-tailed group who have black tail tips, and the Gunnison's prairie dogs, the White-tailed prairie dogs, and the Utah prairie dogs are the white-tailed group who have white tail tips.
    All prairie dogs live in the grasslands of western central North America, and all are social. They live in relative harmony within their social groups. All of the species are similar in their social behavior, although the black-tails are somewhat more social than the white-tails. Learn about a type of hibernation called Torpor that prairie dogs employ. See pups before they emerge from their natal burrows as well as in different stages of life (an average prairie dog lives 3-4 years), rare above ground mating, a lot of greet-kissing, territorial behavior from fighting and aggressive chases to social structure based on plant food sources on each territory, mutual grooming, and prairie dog personalities!
    Prairie dogs are considered Keystone Species of their grassland ecosystems -- some 200 vertebrate species and a number of invertebrate species of animals depend on them for food or for their burrows. Prairie dogs survive in 1-2% of their historic range of habitat. Their numbers have declined drastically over the past 100 years to 1-2% of the number of animals there were historically. Agriculture, land development, target shooting and disease are the primary reasons for their continuing decline.
    The Mexican prairie dogs are listed as Endangered (under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species -- CITES, as well as recognized by the Mexican government as at high risk of extinction), but are still being killed primarily for agricultural land interests. The Utah prairie dogs are listed as Threatened (under the United States' Endangered Species Act -- ESA), but they are being killed due to land development. The other three species need to be listed also in order to have some protection under the law. The Gunnison's prairie dogs are currently under review for listing under the ESA.
    A number of prairie animals are at risk of extinction (as well as prairie dogs themselves) because prairie dog numbers are so low. Five animals that are dependent on prairie dogs and are at highest risk are Black-Footed Ferrets, Swift Foxes, Mountain Plovers, Burrowing Owls and Ferruginous Hawks.

    Farmers over-graze the land and blame the prairie dog. Bison co-existed with prairie dogs for thousand of years. And prairie dogs actually make the vegetation more nutritious, so much so that herbivores prefer vegetation in those areas.

    • @deannelson9565
      @deannelson9565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah and if there'd have been no prairie dogs there would have been three times as many bison! Have you ever been in a prairie dog town they graze that s*** down to the dirt leaving almost nothing for anything else the only time you get any new grass in a town that's worth anything is if you get some fresh rain on it and you get growth faster than they can eat it! I personally love having them around but don't kid yourself they are a very destructive species if your livelihood revolves around the grass as the ranchers does! Pretty sure if somebody put their hand in your pocket and pulled out twenty thousand bucks you wouldn't be overly appreciative of it either!

      Human beings are the ones that over feed. We eat and kill all the animals and blame it on other animals that there's no resources left 2 go around. Gotta love all ppl we r fat fucks.

    • @comanchio1976
      @comanchio1976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dean nelson I can understand that the ranchers aren't too thrilled about having them around, if they feel that they are some kind of threat to their livelihood, but to compare a creature that's just going about it's business the way it has done for thousands of years, to a human thief with corrupt intent, is ridiculous.
      Other methods of managing or deterring local populations should be attempted, as wandering around, massacring such creatures seldom works in the long term.
      Case in point; coyotes. Shooting individuals or groups in and around farmer's properties, had zero effect in the long term, as another individual or group would just show up and take their place.
      Deterrence via livestock guardians, ensured that the local population of coyotes were familiar with, and deterred by the dogs, for generations.

      Eating meat, eggs and dairy are the #1 cause of deforestation and ecological disruption and 70% of all crop farms in the US are used for lifestock feed. Yes, feeding food to animals is a HUGE waste of calories, they don't convert to meat calories efficiently by any stretch of the imagination I forgot what the exact numbers are but suffice it to say that if we didn't rear lifestock we could feed all the poor countries in the world with that farmland instead and that there is a good reason the poorest people can't afford meat at all, it's too expensive to produce meat. The only reason it's affordable in America is because the government subsidizes the hell out of it, your tax dollars are going to annihilate the rainforest.

      I know this comment is ancient, but prairie dogs are NOT "on the brink of extinction". There are five species, and only the Utah and Mexican are endangered, the others are listed as "least concern" by the IUCN - which is the best listing a species can have.

    Thank you for this informative, humorous and sad based on what humans are doing to them video. I often think if all other species on the planet were able to vote whether or not to keep the parasite that is humanity in existence, I think it would be a landslide. Then again other species are more tolerant than we are so maybe they would allow us to stay even at their own demise.

    • @deannelson9565
      @deannelson9565 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      More tolerant are you kidding me only you triggered snowflakes that I have absolutely no idea what the hell that goes on in Mother Nature thinks animals are tolerant! Animals have no sympathy no apathy and no respect for anything else but themselves and to act like they're somehow Noble is just a very good way of letting everyone else know that you have no idea what you're talking about!

    If you think back to your childhood communicating with your surrounding was not that hard. A tree could be your best friend for example.
    Then we began this institution we call school and there we are taught that trees don't speak and non-human animals don't speak and son on and so forth. Slowly that living world we knew as children begin to fade.
    Some of us find the path back to that connection but sadly most of us civilized humans don't.

    I would so love to have a prairie dog. Unfortunately, there are so many animals that I would love to have… But if I were to actually have them I would be an abusive owner. Because I do not have what they need to fulfill them and make them happy and thereby making myself happy. I have seen so many times, people buying animals because you’re cute and they look like they’re a be fun to have, then, because they do not understand the animal completely they do things that are not good for the animals. Or, the animals, By it’s nature is distractive and many other unpleasant results… This is due again tell mismatch of lifestyle and personalities. I love watching the films I love videos, and this my fix, seeing them happy in homes that are suited for the animals.
