Hi Folks. Protecting fruit from fruit fly attack is vital if you want any harvest at all from your crops in some areas. In this clip I share with you the method we've found to be the most effective & it's organic to boot.
Hope the clip helps some & that your pest free gardens are booming. 😉

And, also the cherry tomatoes are too acidic - that's my guess anyway Rob, because I've seen many signs of stung cherry toms with skins healed over and no maggot development inside. I agree exclusion is really the best way - I love your hoop house mate I have to build one of them one day! Cheers :)

Thanks a lot for this video. I live in Africa and have recently had all my cucumbers and zucchini’s decimated. Found a little red fly injecting the small fruit which look to be very similar to your QLD fruit fly. I recently started exclusion using some cut outs from an old mosquito net. Not had success so far as I think they are injecting when the fruit is teeny. Might have to go down the hand pollinating route with a net over the whole plant. Happy to have come across this video today!

Hi Rob, I had the same problem with tomato plants here in Manitoba, Canada, I found that if you plant your tomato in a row with a 2+1 system, two tomatoes and one dill plant, the dill will hide the smell of the tomato and the bugs will stay away from the dill. Plus you will have dill for pickles if you grow them down there, good luck and keep it organic! take care and Merry Christmas too you and your family, Cheer's

We used to have a mango tree but it died due to a lightning strike. Had pests problems too but never identified what it was. Sometimes the larvae are small like the ones you've shown, sometimes as big as your pinkie finger (I'm sure that's some type of beetle).
Not to gross out anyone but sometimes the fruits aren't a total write-off, I'd just remove the part where the vermins had ruined and eat the other part of the fruit. Those would taste better that the fruits that are wholly unblemished.

I use cider vinegar or red wine baits in our kitchen. A few cm in a shallow bowl & mix in a few drips of dish washing liquid to help break the surface tension. Normally cleans them up really well here. Also helps not to have any ripe fruit laying around.

Lost a lot of peaches and manderines last year. Fruit fly stung the mandies through the mesh bag. Those bags you show for small crops look like the go. Gone all out this year. Caught most of the early first hatched females on the sticky oranges available online and on the yellow sticky traps. Also made torula yeast sugar and ammonia traps. One of the yeast traps had fruit flies in and hanging around it but not sure about qld ff. Have pybo pyrethrum for backup. One of the sticky oranges has 12 female fruit flies on it. Counting how many eggs they could have layed means some success. Early in the season yet, so will see what happens.

2:52 there are couple of theories i seen: cherry tomato skin is too shiny for the fruit fly to get a firm grip. another theory is cherry tomato is too acidic for its liking so it tastes and dont like it and fly away. i will not go with skin is too tough theory. fruit fly can pierce thru pomegranate skin 😲

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

From what I've seen I think its just the tough skin of the cherries. They try their hardest but just can't pierce the skin.

    • @RobsAquaponics

Hi there. From my understanding it is very rare for it to occur in aquaponics as the micro organisms in the system tend to keep it at bay. I have had a few plants get rot in their roots towards the end of their lives but I'd only be guessing as to what the cause was.

Unfortunately neem doesn't work on the Queensland fruit flies. The female deposits the larvae into the fruit where it has no effect on them. If it did the commercial growers would help to make it legal to use on food crops here in Australia.

    • @RobsAquaponics

I prefer to use exclusion as I don't like to spray insecticides. They kill off too many of the good insects we need in the garden.
You can make up traps that will lure the pest so they can be poisoned away from the good insects. What you use to lure them would depend on the specific pest you're wanting to control.

      Hey Johnnie.
If those buggers are kept out you should do mate 👍 Have a few of these melons that look to of dodged the fruit flies. I think the skin got too hard for them to penetrate before they found them. Fingers are crossed anyway.
Hope you & yours had a great Christmas mate & all the best for 2017.
      Cheers.

Looks like a terrible pest. We have recently been afflicted by a fruit destroying fruit fly, Spotted Wing Drosophila, but it seems to limit itself to soft fruit and leaves the vegetables and apples alone, so we're luckier than you I guess?

wow what an ugly insect, does it have any natural predators?

      Howdy :)
Only the regular insect eaters as far as I know. If there was a stand out predator I'm sure the fruit industry would be using them.
Cheers & all the best for 2017 if we don't chat beforehand.
      Rob.

Hey Colum. Do you get the Med fly their ?
Channel growth is happening in fits & starts. Would be nice to see a nice steep continual climb but I'd need to pump out a lot of content for that to happen I think ;)
      Cheers mate.
