Haweswater and The Lost Village of Mardale Green

- After a very dry summer the lost village of Mardale Green has reappeared from underneath the surface of Haweswater in the Lake District, Cumbria. The village was submerged when the level of the lake was raised in the 1930's to supply water to Manchester and the north west of England. Haweswater supplies 25% of the drinking water to the north west. Join me for a look around the submerged village including some great footage from the drone.

Blinking heck. We thought it was low a couple of years ago! That was nowt compared to now. Fascinating history. Very sad that these old villages have been lost but amazing how they come back in times of drought to remind us of their past. Thanks Paul.
Yeah. Really quite spooky walking around the old streets, it’s going to need quite a considerable amount of rain to fill it back up!

My great grandmother Marie (pronounced proper, Mariah) Kitchen lived in Mardale. Her brother Thomas Powley Kitchen had one boot raised as he was wounded in ww1. The Kitchens had 2 farms in the area. Her daughter was Magret Riddley, who begat Joyce Todd who is sat by me now. She very much enjoyed this video and said," Aye, tis a sad tale thou's tellin.".

I walked around Mardale village when I was 11 in 1984 or the year after. I remember it very well but at that age I didn’t appreciate where I was or the significance of the destruction of Mardale. Really want to go back but will have to wait a while I reckon. Fantastic video and thank you for sharing. 😀👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you. I really enjoyed filming this one, it was quite surreal standing in the remains of the village. There was an atmosphere being there that is difficult to explain. Awesome experience. 👍🏻

I am sure that none of the residents wanted to leave their homes... were they relocated or compensated at all?
They were compensated, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been enough. How much would you take to leave such a beautiful place. I’m not sure any amount would fully compensate. ☹️ Thank you for watching. 👍🏻

Some actually did find other farms to move to. The publican moved to another pub in Shap village. Yes, there was some compensation, but it' never enough....

Hello. We didn’t have such a dry summer this year in the lakes so the village remained underwater. The lake at the moment is full.
@@ThatllDoVlog What a shame. I've been watching similar clips of the reservoirs in the Peak district and how this year the lost villages are showing. Of course , they are further south so had a much drier summer.

Yes. It would have been a beautiful village.
Following some further research, I believe I was wrong on the location of the church, however the story of its demolition is still correct. 😀 I was right about the location of the inn though. 😎👍🏻
If the water level drops sufficiently, it is still fairly easy to spot the remains of the church foundations. Assuming you know where to look of course..... It is smaller than you might imagine. By the way, the dam itself wasn't fully completed until 1940, and that is when the level of the water began to rise to it's present level. Up until the 80's, the bridge actually had walls on each side. But sadly the walls have been robbed out by souvenir seekers. You are a little out with your church yard location. The water level was still a little high to see the location of the church. It was almost at the foot of the wooded area that projects out into the lake. In 1984, grass actually began to grow on the tennis court immediately opposite the Dun Bull Inn..... The school was moved, stone by stone, and rebuilt a couple of miles back down the road towards Bampton Grange. A large stone, on which some of Mardale's children had carved faces, is still in position outside the gate of the "school" , which is now a private dwelling..... Shap Historical Society has much information about Mardale, along with many old photographs of the village prior to it's demolition. There are even a couple of publications available - with lots of info and old photos- available from the Society itself.

@@Brian-om2hh I have the original photos of the image outside the house taken by a late friend, the image is now weathered away and was of the headmaster of the school. The stone was found by locals below the dam whilst walking their dogs and moved to where it lies today.
@@daviddanielstephenson2833 Mardale School was removed, stone by stone, and rebuilt around 2 to 3 miles or so back down the road towards Bampton. It is now a private dwelling......
@@Brian-om2hh Hi Brian,The school in question was the Measand grammar school run by Rev Richard Hebson; there was also another public school mid way along the valley.
It was the grammr school which now stands at Walmgate Head and owned by a freind of ours, when we visit te area we always call in for a coffee.
The village itself was Mardale. A particular part of the village was called Mardale Green...... Mardale Green can be seen at 20 seconds into this old film. It is the grassy area projecting into the lake in the middle distance.... th-cam.com/video/bWvNM0M5KKw/w-d-xo.html
