The day after he died, I mean the very next day, I went to a bar somewhere in Hollywood and the door guy literally had a TShirt on the said “I 🪼 Steve Irwin” It wasn’t a jellyfish emoji tho. It was a stingray emoji. I laughed so hard I found out I was goin to hell.

Based on Wiki it was a little over 2 months between when he died and when this episode aired. A-grade irony, such a quick turnaround. South Park and Simpsons do this so expertly. I listened to this line 4 times in a row when I was watching. Simpsons will say one thing and show the opposite, like “[event] will never happen” and then the next beat is it happening. South Park will say one thing and then say the exact opposite, the characters will completely contradict themselves. Having a person do it when you can inhabit their mind is, I think, more hilarious than having the irony written into the world.

  • @williampilling2168

They did a joke the episode prior to this, with Steve Irwin showing up at Satan's Halloween party with a stingray sticking out of his chest. He was forced to leave the party because he wasn't in costume.

I think the point of this episode, which it feels like most people miss, is to make fun of all the movies that have this trope.
the young sports team, that is facing a tough challenge, but not only do they have to worry about training hard, they have a sick child in their team, and if they dont win the game, the child is going to die. theyre poking fun at how ridiculous it is.

Yeah, it is surprising that South Park didn’t fit in a Mighty Ducks poop prank in this episode. And on the contrary, it would be Cartman sneaking out with Linda Stotch’s purse, crapping in it, hide it under a tree or bush, then tell Butters that his mom misplaced her purse and point out the location. Then Cartman watches in amusement as Butters retrieves the purse, then brings it into the house to his mom. 😂

Whats up Dash--I'm a recent subscriber and I gotta say, your videos rock man! I'm a long time south park viewer and I've really enjoyed your episode reactions. Always quick to recognize references and I think you do a great job of picking up on the little nuances that make Trey and Matt such incredible writers. Also very cool having you translate the bits of Japanese that will occasionally come up in episodes; happens more than I had realized 😂
No idea what your selection process is like and I'm sure you get tons of reccomendations but in any case, here are, in no particular order, some episodes that I think you should check out:
    - Ginger Cow
    - Mystery of the Urinal Deuce
    - The Snuke
    - Insecurity
    - All About Mormons
    - Osama bin Laden has Farty Pants
    - Stunning and Brave
    - Sponsored Content
    - Cartoon Wars I & II (if you can find them, both banned)
    - 200 & 201 (if you can find them, both banned)
Keep it up Dash, love your content!

Sorry for recommending such a dark episode its definitely one that you will remember.
Here's a quote from butters that may help us understand "Well yeah, and I'm sad, but at the same time I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like, it makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good, so I guess what I'm feelin' is like a, beautiful sadness."

The ending shows the Red Wings having a triumphant and redemptive happy ending like a standard upbeat sports movie, but it also shows the painful perspective of the team they triumphed over and the tragic, fatal effect it has on Nelson. Almost makes Sarcastiball where the goal is to be the nicest seem reasonable.

The Steve Irwin jokes are Matt and Trey doubling down in response to controversy over them making fun of him in the episode “Hell on Earth 2006” earlier in that season. That’s a fantastic episode that you should watch. It’s one of my favorites.

@watus1674 as a kid I didn't get the joke because in South Park he did not die via stingray, but via helicopter rotor. I guess they had forgotten they had killed him off in an early season already screwing up their own continuity.

No joke though, the rivalry between the Avalanch and the Redwings has always been pretty intense. The idea of the Redwings going all out against a peewee team from Colorado, plausible.
