How to upgrade your Rockshox Pike travel from 150mm to 160mm

  • IMPORTANT UPDATES:
    1. Rather than removing your brake lever from the bars, it is best practice to remove your brake caliper from the fork to avoid any oil ruining your brake pads.
    2. At the 2:45 mark you will see that we use a rubber mallet to smash the lowers off. This is incorrect. To properly remove the lower, you should use a rubber or plastic mallet to firmly strike each bottom bolt to dislodge the air and damper shafts from the lower leg. Then Firmly pull the lower leg downward until oil begins to drain. Continue pulling
    downward to remove the lower leg from the fork.
    Step by step instructions on how to upgrade your Rockshox Pike from 150mm to 160mm of travel. Follow along as my good friend Fitzy teaches me how to change my Pike shaft at home using only basic tools, and some neat tips and tricks. Make sure you subscribe to keep learning all about bike maintenance with me!

    Love the camera angles, closeups, and corrections you noticed after the fact. Same procedure, minus the new longer air shaft, can be used to do your 50 hour lower leg service.

    Thanks for posting this! It was cool to see a regular home mechanic do this job! Note for anyone else doing this. As noted below I'd pull the caliper/hose "up"/off the lowers. There is always a chance you will drip oil and ruin your brake pads!! Also I would not suggest hitting your axle like that. Would really suck if it bent or damaged threads! AND I'd order new foam rings and have them available. They expanded/stretched and were really hard to get back in! (as well as inspect seals, heck for 16-20 bucks I will just get a seal kit with the parts so I have on hand next time just in case!) I bought cheap C clip pliers that change tips/angle, thought that might be nice? They wanted to "change tips" while in the middle of using them and kept falling apart... The "tab" between the C-clip; your not twisting the tab. Your pushing up, rotating around the whole seal head so the tab is "under" and not between the ends of the C-clip. (and then reverse when you put it together) Also I got all the way done ready to air up and only then noticed I'd sucked a bit of the seal under inside next to the arch. So I had to pull the lowers again. (didn't want to take a chance messing it up and having to wait to order new seats/tool) So good idea to check each step 100% before going to the next one. :)

    Have you experimented with other tires/brands? I ask because I’ve tried LOTS of different tires and I can’t seem to figure out why so many people like the minions. Even people who admit that they don’t roll well, wear relatively quickly, but insist on using them. Just wondering as you said you’re fairly new to mountain biking. Good video btw!

    • @MTBTravelReview
      @MTBTravelReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have experimented with many of the Maxxis tires on the market, and I agree, the minions don't roll the fastest. That is why I normally run what I consider the magic set up with an Aggressor in the back and a Minion DHR up front. Minion DHR handles the dirty work up front and holds traction like no other, while the Aggressor in the rear maintains traction, but allows for a lot more speed and momentum. Thanks for the compliment btw!

    I'd recommend NOT putting your lowers (and brake caliper) into the oil pan with your nasty used oil (if you'd like to keep using your front brake in the future that is), and also replacing your foam rings when doing this procedure.

    • @MTBTravelReview
      @MTBTravelReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว
