  • How long will a Tesla battery last in the cold if you're stranded and stuck in the snow or in a massive traffic jam? It might be longer and more comfortable than you think. I put that to the test in sub-zero tempertures.

Thank you for doing this. You, Brian Riebe and the others are providing excellent, real world information that is very helpful to us EV owners by doing these experiments.

Would love to see someone do that test with an ICE vehicle. I know for me in Phoenix stuck in a jam I have seen my gas needle drop fast.

It’s more complicated and a gasoline vehicle. Since most people will be starting the car, warming it up, and then turning it off in an effort to conserve fuel.
A quick Google says 1/5 of gallon per hour.

Nice test. Compare simultaneously to a Rav 4 prime

Wow, I've just heard on the UK news channel, BBC, that you guys in the upper Midwest had temps as cold as -45C/-49f with wind chill yesterday/ today.
Firstly, hope you and your family are OK.... Second, that would have been the ultimate test xD

Yes! We’ve had some cold days around here. I’m closer to Minneapolis so we didn’t get anything colder than ‘-30C. We usually only get a few days a year like this, so this test was probably run during the coldest day we’ll get! But yes, that’s one of the goals of the channel- is to see how these vehicles work in these conditions since we live in them every year. Hopefully it will show that EVs fare better than most people would think but also where they could use some improvements. Thanks for the kind thoughts and words!

I mean charge your car to 100% before a snow storm seems reasonable. People top off their gas tank before snow storm too.

I agree, I guess I meant it was less reasonable that you'd still have 100% charge by the time you got stranded since you had to drive somewhere and eat up some of that battery.

How well did your battery function after your test. Also is the battery's long term function affected by routine operation in extreme cold.? If a battery goes bad in an EV, the car is nearly worthless.

It's only been a couple of weeks, but it functions normally. I don't believe the battery's long term function is affected by regularly running it in the cold. It's more affected by large amounts of DC charging and leaving the battery at 100% or 0% for long times.

Tesla looks after the battery heatind it even if the car is off, so in a Tesla you will not have a battery problem
