You have to ask how much durability you really need. I have a 60L sack in 1000D Cordura that I bought in the 1970s. I used it for multiple seasons as a technical climbing sack, mostly on abrasive granite, before relegating it to day sack duties. It has been used for literally thousands of days in the hills, and is still going strong with little visible wear. It will see me out. So clearly unless you are involved in a highly abrasive activity like canyoneering the 500D will do you just fine. Though having said that, a typical lightweight pack only uses 1.5 sq meters of fabric, so you will only be saving 200g or so. As for damaging your clothes, any well designed pack should surely be using something smoother like an Oxford for the back and the straps? These are low abrasion areas where heavy Cordura would be overkill. That's what my old pack uses and it has lasted fine.

The polyester feels considerably tougher/stronger/more heavy duty, yet the PVC version is “supposed” to be “better”. The Amazon brand one is marketed as 500D Cordura, but feels like absolute trash. So my question is how do you even verify what the product is actually made out of, because clearly things can be marketed as whatever they want and not actually be said material…..

I have a GR2 with 1000D exterior with 210D back and straps. Perfect combo. Soft to carry. Will last a lifetime otherwise. It's flawless and durable as all hell. It's a be all end all bag that I plan on having forever. I use it for everything. EDC, hiking, deployments, overnight travel, you name it, it goes.
Bomb proof!! No issues. My 26L GR2 shows no wear. My 34L shooter has been abused, no problems. My Rucker 4.0 was used during an event this weekend and it also is showing no signs. All are 500D 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@JustFluxz the Rucker was thrown around, carried a 20lb plate (normally 30lb) and dragged around. This wasn’t the most intense event I’ve done but I’m confident the 500D is just as capable for anything I plan to do. It’s my preferred fabric currently.
Without any experience it is difficult to describe. Best advice I have is to research or ask the company website where you bought it to see what they used in the design. Otherwise, someone with both fabrics in a bag design should be able to tell you by feel. Hope this helps.

@@RIVERAEDGE not an expert, but I believe the number corresponds most directly to the thickness of the individual fibers - which translates inversely to the density of the weave. So 1000d = thick, more robust fibers = wider weave / more rugged hand; at the other end of the spectrum, something like 210d (as demonstrated in the video) = finer fibers = smoother, denser weave (yet more susceptible to wear over time). Hope that helps; I’m learning all this for the first time myself.
one of my only issues with my GR1 is that wearing it with a tank or w/o a shirt can chafe you pretty quickly, especially on the straps to your shoulders.

I always thought of higher denier like higher thread count material. I have some 1600D stuff and it's actually a smoother face due to the higher thread count textile. Anything with a higher/denser thread count will be more durable. Even the poly non woven stuff in a higher denier is thicker, not necessarily more abrasive.

I do wonder, I too just ordered the GR2 34L in black Multicam, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before the 1000D/500D start coming with the same back and strap denier as the Rucker 3.0. It honestly is very durable for the time I’ve had my 3.0, and would be even slicker for the edc/travel based rucks.
That's a good point. If I know anything about GORUCK they don't often change things rapidly. I suppose that's a possibility that they'll start using 210D on straps in all the rucks. But then again it does change the aesthetic of the bag so I doubt it.

Do you recommend the white cordura fabric for backdrop shoot? Like they said less wrinkles if the fabric is thicker and heavier. Im confused now if I should buy. The 3 yard of cordura fabric.
@@JBOutside1 nice one, thank you, I got my first goruck today (gr2 26l 500D) and went for my first ruck, I just put a 22lb barbell weight in the elastic pouch, it carried alright but would you reccomend a ruck plate instead? Have you had any issue rucking with the 500D one? I thought it would be substantial for rucking as well as using for EDC and travel but now I'm doubting myself!
@@Chivalrousdrake before the Rucker was introduced I rucked with standard bricks from Home Depot (lots of rucking 101 info in my other video). The Rucker is really the best solution if you’re going to do a lot of rucking. That said, the GR2 will work and a plate will be a good solution. The plate for the GR1 is what fits your ruck the best. The bad news is that the Rucker takes a separate plate. You can use the Rucker plate in the GR2 but it won’t be as secure. Check out my “Rucking 101” and “Rucker” videos for some more detail.
The answer is yes. How much, I’m not sure. Since these bags are slightly different designs it would not have been completely fair to directly compare. I think in the larger bags like the GR2s going with the 500d is the way to go because of all the layers of fabric in the bag design.

There is a very slight difference in weight. The more material, the more weight savings. I think in a bag like any of the GR2s the savings of having 500D is noticeable, but not dramatically. I haven't weighed bags to compare but if I had to guess it would be well under 1 lb difference. The feel of 500D is better also for the more layered bags like the GR2.
@@makcz944 Dang, you’re good. I weighed both. 25% savings. While not an exact match weighing the SK21 (2.4 lbs) and GR1 (3.2 lbs) I did see a significant difference.
I’m not a fabric expert but I’m 99% sure it’s not in this application. It looks like that’s a separate coating that is specifically added to certain types of fabric.

How can you tell the difference between 1000 and 500 Denier? I have a jacket in cordura and I am unsure on the denier level

How to tell visually when buying online new or used if it’s the 500d or the 1000d version, is there any indication or label tags on the pack??
No. You can try to find out when it was purchased. That might narrow it down. The color and when it was bought could tell you.

The 500D will be just fine for rucking if your question was about the material. I love the 500D GR2.
