Malaysia and its government like to pride itself on its multiracial and multicultural of a society. It is mainly made up of Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnicities, with other ethnic groups such as Kadazan and Iban, spread out across East Malaysia.
In today’s video, it’ll cover the topic of Vernacular School System. To Indonesians, this system is not familiar to our ears, but to all Malaysians, this topic has been a hot debate for a while now.
Vernacular schools, which are schools that use languages other than Malay and English as the main medium, have been around since colonial times. In simple terms, vernacular language is a local language commonly spoken by a community. Vernacular medium schools are schools where the medium of education is a local or native language.
They are a fixture of the educational landscape in Malaysia thanks to Chinese and Indian migrants who wanted to provide their children with alternative academic opportunities when they settled in the country.
Currently, public primary schools are divided into two categories based on the medium of instruction:
* Malay-medium National Schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan, SK)
* non-Malay-medium National-type Schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan, SJK), also known as "vernacular schools", further divided into
* National-type School (Chinese) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina), SJK(C)), Mandarin-medium and simplified Chinese writing
* National-type School (Tamil) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil), SJK (T)), Tamil-medium
All schools admit students regardless of racial and language background.

I'm malay. I studied in Chinese school for 6 years. I can speak fluent Melayu (all Melayu dialect in Malaysia), English, mandarin, Cantonese and a bit of Tamil.

I studied in a convent school but I mix around freely with other races and learn their languages, culture and custom. In my opinion The true Malaysian should look at everyone as his/her own. It's very unfortunate, they are those who are still not fluent in BM even though it's the easiest language to learn.

It is unimaginable if that happens in Indonesia, each tribe has its own type of school according to the language it uses. There are many schools that model like that later. Since before independence and in the struggle for independence, several races in Indonesia such as the Indian, Arab and even Chinese races participated in the struggle to achieve and maintain Indonesia's independence, after Indonesia was formed, the races that are said to have come from their native country did not ask for compensation to be able to continue using their language in separate schools for their families and children. races that came from countries outside Indonesia (formerly the Dutch East Indies) merged into one nation with Indonesian as the language of unity. Maybe we are not good at English, not good at Chinese, but we are proud to have a language that can unite thousands of ethnic groups in Indonesia. Indonesia, and able to unite the 270,000,000 Indonesian population. Maybe imitating Malaysia, each race is given special privileges, then Indonesia can definitely disband.
Dulu di Indonesia zaman Penjajahan Belanda dan Jepang ada sekolah Belanda,, Sekolah Chung Hwa untuk Etnis China ,, Sekolah Romusha dan Sekolah Jawa. tapi Ketika masuk orde Baru setelah Kemerdekaan Indonesia Semua sekolah berdasarkan Etnis dihapuskan secara tegas. apalagi zaman Soeharto saat itu pemimpin paling Tegas. Secara Indonesia itu negara Multi Etnis Budaya Suku Ras dan Agama yah pasti pecah NKRI sekolah berdasarkan Etnis kayak di malaysia akan ada sekolah Batak Sekolah Papua sekolah Aceh dan lainnya itulah pegangan ideologi Pancasila dan Sumpah Pemuda diajarkan disekolah sekolah baik di sekolah Negeri Swasta maupun Agama.
Jangan heran malingsia salah satu negara paling bdoo didunia masa sekolah ditentukan berdasarkan Etnis aneh aja.. kalau gitu harusnya adil malingsia juga banyak Suku Etnisnya ada Jawa Minang Dayak Kadazan Iban Bugis Bangladesh Nepal seharusnya dibuat sekolah khusus buat mereka. Namanya juga Pemerintah bdoo makanya mereka sekarang terpecah-pecah belah Etnis Disana sulit membaur dengan lainnya dari bahasa juga ketahuan...

I would consider Malaysia as one of the most open minded country in Asia. People are free to use their language and many of them are fluent in English. Driving is not much of a problem compared to many other countries, where you get lots of honking and lots of motorcycles zigzagging on the road. I would say that the roads in Malaysia are almost the same standard or better than many countries in Europe. Street food is clean and many vendors use gloves and aprons. In some countries in South East Asia and Asia, I can only watch but wouldn't dare to eat. i had a wonderful 8 months experience in Malaysia.
Biarkanlah Malaysia dengan sejarah dan keunikannya. Tidak ada yang salah jika kita melihatnya dari berbagai aspek dan sudut oandang.
Begitu juga Indonesia dengan sejarah dan keragamannya. Jika dipimpin orang yang tepat hingga 15 -25 tahun ke depan, Indonesia akan melaju pesat. Dalam 20 sampai 30 ke depan, kemajuan suatu negara tidak lagi tergantung pada SDM (karena sistem pendidikan itu akan berkembang organik dengan sendirinya). Negara yang memiliki SDA melimpah macam Indo dan Malay tidak lagi banyak bergantung pada negara lain.
Kenapa, karena ilmu dan teknologi bisa dipelajari, tapi kelimpahan alam adalah anugerah.
Nanti kita akan melihat negara yang saat ini kaya, maju, dipuja, akan menjadi negara yang layak dikasihani.
Malaysian education system more flexible and independent..you can choose whatever school suit with your interested..the problem is parents make their son as experiment things.
I spent three years in SJK(C), then I moved on to private international school due to my plans to study abroad. I appreciate my time in the Chinese vernacular school though I wish these schools had a more integrated approach. For example, for Malay, I was taught by Chinese teachers who... don't speak Malay that well lol. They just teach it in a way that we can score well in exam. I disagree with this and wish it was taught not as a means to an end, but because it is a valuable language as well. .
Rather than competitive edge it provides, I like the cultural aspect of it. My school would invite the neighbouring SK (sekolah kebangsaan) to our Chinese New Year programs like learning Chinese calligraphy and arts.
I have no problem also integrating with people from other races obviously. But I disagree - I don't think it's a small group of Chinese people only who only mingle with themselves. I think is a BIG group of such people. (lesser in our generation, though). I think the desire to only mix with own race group is fostered since young. In fact, a lot of racist rhetoric is fostered since young through things such as underhanded comments about people's skin tones, customs, etc. You can have Malay friends, Indian friends, etc. and still have prejudices against them and make racist commentary towards them. I have met a ridiculous amount of Chinese people who will make underhanded comment about others such as "of course they did this, they are Chinese/Malay/Indian what" behind their backs. They think this is normal, and do not think they are racist. Sharing my perspective because I think it's important to note that racism is still very prevalent, and each of us should be much more aware and keen to fight it :)

As some one on the receiving end of the treatment (Indonesian bumi studying in Taiwan, with some Malaysian Chinese schoolmate), I can't disagree anymore with Claudia's opinion, especially the BIG comment. No, I don't mean everybody from that system are racist, but saying small group is an understatement.
And I believe, this problem is just an ego problem (Vernacular University that hurt some ultra nationalist ego,etc), that can be easily solved when every party lower their egos and willing to meet somewhere in the middle. You guys have ample of integration example that works from your neighbor, beginning with Indonesian's super brutal approach (that definitely will not worked in Malaysia) to Thailand and Singapore that works quite well in their respective country, albeit very different. You can solve it, and you must (y)

@@hairitajudin4208 betul. mereka yg tk nk berusaha utk merapatkan hubungan antara kaum. kalau dari primary school sampai secondary mereka disekolah mereka mcm mana kita nk mengenali mereka. apapun yg pasti yg ruginya mereka percentage population mereka semakin mengecil. bumiputra 69.7% chinese 22.9% india 6.6%. statistik meramalkan menjelang 2100 population bumiputra akan menjadi 80% chinese 15% dan indian less than 5%. bukan bumiputra mendiskriminasi kaum lain tetapi kaum lain memilih utk mendiskriminasi anak2 cucu cicit mereka sendiri dgn memilih vernakular school yg ternyata mengasingkan diri mereka dari kaum majoriti. syllabus pun dari negara cina. sejarah pun tentang negara cina

Malaysia did have English medium schools before 1975, All those schools were thean converted to Sekolah Kebangsaan. Most of these former English schools are pretigious and have high reputation. Most well off parents of all races would prefer to send their children to those schools. Even today.

Yes,indeed, missionaries schools fully government funded, attended by poor,medium class,royalties, not to mention our present honourable King,DYMM yang dipertuan AGONG,former and present portfolio ministers, government administrators and VIP.Dedicated educators,past and present indeed transformed this unique country tolerances toward education creating a Malay newscaster presenting mandarin news on national television, bilingual diplomats,and last but not least,a simple Malaysian on the street.

Tapi karena dianggap Memecah belah negara maka sekarang sistemnya udh dihapus.....

Sekolah Negeri
Sekolah Agama
Sekolah swasta
Dan sekolah international
biarlah malaysia menyelesaikan massalah bahasa negaranya sendiri. bahasa indonesia tetap dicintai dan dibanggakan di nkri

Orang cina totaly menolak dasar kebangsaan malaysia melalui persatuan zhong dong. Persatuan yang cukup racist kerana pengasasnya telah dilucutkan kerakyatan. Buktinya anak cina malaysia menterbalikkan jalur gemilang malaysia. Bukti ada. Orang cina diragui dan boleh bersekongkol dengan musuh. Correction.. Vernacular schools are public schools thus they are fully funded by the government. What does she meant by they did not get complete funding by the government? Like any other schools they also received external donations from private entities but claiming they did not get complete funding by the government is a lie and misleading. Admit it or not vernacular schools does create divisions among Malaysian mainly due to the language taught at the schools, Language unites thus it's disgusting to see some of the them can't even converse in national language properly or not at all.

In USA the white and the black (and others) all use English yet quite divided and a lot of division. Not really true, as we have many countries shown.
Just to correct you there. Not all public schools in Malaysia are fully funded. A lot of vernacular schools and former missionary schools are partially funded. What does this mean? It means teachers and study materials eg textbooks are funded by the government. But every other expenditure eg electricity and water bills are to be paid by the schools themselves. Even replacing broken chairs or getting a new hall built requires the staff and students to raise funds. This is why you see many vernacular schools and missionary schools (I studied in Convent) organised Canteen Day, Jogathon Day - to raise funds from the public.
So this interviewee is correct and you are wrong.
The core problem is actually Malaysia still divide their citizicen by races in many aspects. In myKad, they have to put bumiputera or not. In the education system, they still give the bumiputera priority in the university entrance (I have asked both my chinese and malay friend for this and the answer was interesting). Still open the vernicular school because afraid to lose the competitiveness. The good thing of vernicular system is people still can learn their heritage language. But the world changes. With a massive technology development, an American living in USA can speak Malay, chinese and English. I met many non Chinese and non Arab who speak Mandarin or Arab so fluently. I am Indonesian, non Chinese, learning Mandarin for my own goal.

What about Thailand and Vietnam, ?
I do not think that they have vernacular school . On the other hand, besides the pro of that these students in govt public schools , will DEFINITELY able to homogeneous intermixed and able to speak to each other well without the taboo of "labeling not good enough Bahasa Kebangsaan " speakers by the majority. ..
This is a BIG PRO .!!! On the added advantage to learning one's mother tongue or even some else mother tongue , I know that the Vietnamese just attended another language class privately outside their public school and the end results will be just be more the less the same. ie They have an added language to compete in this world.
I am no education expert for sure, but looking at the regions that had worked and not much issues raised publicly , now and then, must have some significant common denominations.
Singapore choose to "have English " as the common language of instructions . So that a non excuse or non combative reasons for all. Whilst other races can elect to take another mother tongue langue in the sidelines.
If Malaysia can have the same system like Singapore OR maybe into the likes of Thailand ( not 100% sure if similar to Vietnam too ) and or Vietnam type , may be stand a better choice to ward off the bitterness and obvious "sore thumb" now if in Malaysia and really be able to intermix in just one type of school . My 2 cents.
All parents want their children to have the best education regardless . Just provide the best , and demand will be easily met !. Reflect on the government and the country and most of all the backbone of the nation which is the family and every future family. Is not the question of race, religion or culture, but love ❤ for all humanity. Race, religion or culture will always divide, whether we like it or not, which shouldn't be the case if we all just embrace and love ❤ one humanity principle of one blood .

Sekolah berdasarkan etnis secara otomatis akan memecah belah masyarakat berdasarkan etnisnya. Walaupun selain orang Cina boleh sekolah di sana tetap saja jumlah etnis lain yang mau bersekolah di sana akan sangat sedikit kalau tidak mau dibilang hampir tidak ada. Beruntung di Indonesia tidak ada sekolah berdasarkan etnis seperti itu, tidak ada sekolah khusus orang Jawa, orang Sunda, orang Batak, orang Ambon dll... Hal seperti itu dapat menyebabkan kebanggaan terhadap etnis atau suku yang berlebihan. Sudah sepantasnya bahasa Melayu sebagai penutur mayoritas di sana menjadi bahasa resmi negara dan digunakan oleh seluruh rakyat Malaysia tetapi sama seperti suku Jawa, Sunda, Batak, Ambon dll yang boleh menggunakan bahasa sukunya masing-masing maka begitu juga dengan suku Tionghoa, India dan Arab juga harus boleh menggunakan bahasa sukunya. Kita harus menjunjung tinggi Bahasa Persatuan yaitu Bahasa Indonesia.

saya rasa sekolah vernakular ini adalah konsep yang menarik. kebebasan kurikulumnya patut dicontoh. Gejala yang mulai nampak di daerah saya adalah sekolah negeri agak mulai ditinggalkan sedangkan sekolah swasta terutama yang jenis islam terpadu mulai diminati. kendalanya adalah dana yang dialokasikan pemerintah.
pemerintah terus-menerus mengguyur dana ke sekolah negeri yang sudah ditinggalkan ini, di sisi lain masyarakat menghabiskan uang ke sekolah swasta. mengapa uang negara tidak di salurkan pada siswa bukannya sekolah? yaitu dengan cara sekolah jenis apa pun itu mendapat dana pemerintah proporsional terhadap jumlah siswanya sehingga sekolah yang siswanya banyak. mendapat lebih banyak dana ketimbang sekolah yang muridnya sedikit.
ada kisah SMP Negeri di daerah saya yang murid barunya hanya 45, tapi anggarannya gak beda dengan SMP Negeri yang siswa barunya 100, bahkan anggarannya (full dari negara) lebih besar dari sekolah swasta yang murid barunya 70 orang.
Klo sekolah venikular di terapkan di Indonesia maka jadi pemecah belah bayangan kan 750 etnis yang punya bahasa mereka sendiri punya budaya mereka sendiri punya history kerjaan sendiri punya makasanan mereka sendiri lantas punya sekolah venikular sendiri. Misalnya saya etnis Makassar kami suku makassar punya bahasa kami sendiri punya budaya kami sendiri punya sejarah kami sendiri Kesultanan gowa-tallo kami punya pahlawan kami sendiri kami punya pulau kami sendiri Sulawesi jadi untuk apa terikat dengan Jawa kalau kami bisa berdiri di atas kaki sendiri untuk apa belajar tentang Indonesia ? Fokus ke daerah kami sendiri saja lantas punya pendidikan venikular dari pendidikan bergerak ke arah politik dan gerakan pro suku makassar atau Bugis di Sulawesi apalagi fakta bahwa kita terpisah oleh pulau otomatis teman bergaul orang lokal yang punya pemahaman yang sama

Alhamdulillah. Indonesia 🇮🇩 dengan satu Bahasa satu bangsa satu negara Indonesia 🇮🇩.. Tak peduli suku agama apa keturunan apa. Soal bahasa Étnik atau suku... Kembali ke pribadi keluarga masing-masing.
its cant be compared with other countries because our country initially built through agreement and understanding, tolerance and acceptance, respect and appreciates. we call it national integrations. basically everyone must accept and respect Islam as official federal religion, bahasa melayu as official language and sultan and malay/native right. As for return, everyone freely practices their cultures, languages, and equal right in constitution. that's why initially there are English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil types of schools. Nowadays no more english and malay school but they named it national school. But it didn't stop anyone to go any schools. I'm initially from Chinese school because we are from plantations estate area but when back to my hometown, continue to national school. My brother manage to finished his Chinese school. And its no problem even better for him since he now professor in Islamic university which only English and Arab as their official languages, See, how rich our country with various of languages.

Putrajaya is 99% Malays. GLCs are all Malays. ASNB only allow Malays (mutual funds that gives highest return, consistently), MARA loan is for Malays, public unis disciminates non-Malays, elite Malay schools (SASER, MCKK, Sekolah Tun Fatima, Kolej Tunku Kurshia, SMS Sabah) are only for Malays.

Vernacular schools are a constitutional right. It is guaranteed in the Malaysian Constitution. Theoretically, if there are enough people of a particular language, they can start a vernacular school. There are other types of vernaculars schools like those teaching in Arabic in Kelantan and Telugu in Perak. If there are enough Malaysians of Korean descent, they could start a Korean Vernacular school as well. Any language actually.

In Indonesia there is no race mentioned in the form. It might cause division if you mention about race. For example if it is divided into Papuan race and Malay race, then how do you classify the people in between, for example Flores people? Or do you want every ethnic group is classified as its own race? The total number will be 300+ of races.

Just because you had bad experienced or getting bullied in ur SMK doesn't mean everyone else does, it's individually not the whole community
I feel that it is very important for the Indians and Chinese to keep their vernacular schools as this will provide an advantage for the Malaysian society as compared to our neighbouring countries. As we all know that the major economies of India and China will be the biggest economies in the future so this will provide a much bigger advantage for Malaysians in the future. Hope the myopic ultra nationalists politicians can see this advantage.
