I watched TWC A LOT, as a teenager, and John Hope, was one of my heroes. I wrote a letter to him and he was kind enough to write back!, I miss him dearly.

Me too! I miss the old Weather Channel! I grew up in the early to mid '80s with the Weather Channel...it got me interested in meteorology. One summer, I wrote them a letter about my interests in meteorology, and the mentioned it on one of their promo commercials. They played that commercial over and over again for a period of time. I was so excited! :-)

WOW! Now this is the Weather Channel I grew up with! I especially remember the cool animated graphics.

The only thing that makes '80s emo muzak even cheesier is listening to it waver on 20 year old tape!

I remember those days! When they used to spend a few minutes each day to reading letters from viewers. At one point I drew a weather map and sent it to them. Although I did not see it I was told they did show it on the air!

That music at 4:00 is so 80's. I remember they split the Weather Channel with MSG for a time.

I totally forgot about Tropical Storm Henri. It came through the Boston area with little or no fanfare, a day or so before Gloria.

I think this was in about Sept-Oct of 1985.
I was stationed in the USCG in Portland, Maine and we were on alert.

Interesting stuff displayed from the WeatherSTAR 3000 at 5:40. I never knew the 3000 displayed hurricane and tropical storm status.

Another WeatherSTAR Fan! I did intern at cable stations, it had dymo labels on THE RACK MOUNT BOX , ON it etc, sayin NWS/WX FEED CH 16 OUTPUT ETC. sat feed wires etc. I run the simulator for 4000 CURRENTLY and ITS AS CLOSE AS IT CAN BE I GUESS.

I was in 4th grade, and remember some of this. Once the storm got close weather channel sat/cable feeds went down between the WEATHER STAR NWS FEEDS WITH THE RED SCREEN SCROLL TAKING OVER. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HURRICANE WARNING etc it was sort of exciting as a kid , the power was out for some time. We were huttled around our AM and weather radios, playing board games , cards ,etc. with candles. It was very humid/tropical. Neighbors helping each other cut up wood from trees, and mom cooking all the frozen food, no school it was fun for the first storm we had. Hurricane Bob was not as nice to us though.

Amen. I'm a geek who watched TWC A LOT as a kid, and John Hope was one of my heroes. I wrote to him and he was kind enough to write back! Wish I had saved his letter...
Loving this slice of old-school TWC, especially the quintessentially '80s synthesizer Muzak. Anyone know who performed that piece at a little after 4:30? Sounds like Mannheim Steamroller to me.

I know you left this comment 14 years ago and I'm not sure you already ID'd it, but that's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' by Kittyhawk from 1984!

He mentioned that a brownout fucked up his VCR, so he had to get his camera out.
