    This was actually my first sl1 run ever, as I completed it before beating Radabeast in the ER RL1+0 Zwei Only Run. Some afterthoughts:
    I guess I never realized how cancerous Soul of Cinder and Twin Princes could be simply because they just do not have enough HP and do not do enough damage to ever pose a big enough threat on a normal playthrough. They don't have to force you to be consistent against them if you can tank any BS hit with an embered HP bar and finished the fight with 6 estus leftover. I think all ds3 bosses do too little damage and have too little health in general and these two exemplify it the most as they go from unchallenging to hair pulling if you need the fight to be consistent for any extended length of time. You can tank hits from Soul of Cinder at Sl1 in New Game Plus 7, it's that pathetic. Even if we try a treat Lothric's teleport into fast overhand like Godksin Noble Belly Wog and try to watch for it when we know he can do it and then just reaction roll every other option, it still doesn't account for when your lock on gets broken and you aren't facing him, his blinding white particles from teleporting to and away block your vision point blank against the camera because he TPs behind you for a lot of the options which causes the particles from his TP away to be right against the camera when your lock-on spins you 180 degrees. Plus the fact that he has like 6 or more other options from teleport with some have extremely similar poses after teleporting like double slash.
    It's still so funny to me how no-one ever complained about combat branching until ER when it was actually polished and consistent finally after so many games (DS2, BB, DS3 and I'm pretty sure even Flamelurker in Demon Souls). Case and point Lorain, Nameless, DSA, SoC, Gael and others holding their follow-up attacks despite you being in front of them and not completing their combo. Not to mention how prevalent posture breaking exists in this game as well, only difference is some bosses you don't repost and the fights are shorter so you don't get as many.
    In the end I feel like I still don't understand Twinces, Friede, or ESPECIALLY SoC to my standard, which is to be consistent with all their moves 95ish% of the time and also know which attacks are 100% safe to heal on. Still just fluked it out at SL1. Friede has got to be one of the glitchiest bosses they have made. I just feel a tiny bit hollow as I feel after all this I didn't feel like I learnt any of the bosses any better than I already did from casually playing the game all those years ago.
    All that being said I still love this game and there's really on a handful of problem attacks just like any From game, but I'm glad they bumped the scaling in Elden Ring.
    P.S. The muffin I munched on after abyss watchers was my breakfast from before I booted up stream. 1 pistachio muffin, an espresso and a handful of cocktails for the whole day smh

      I came here certain I could find some discoveries on how to fight ds3 bosses now that Elden Ring has educated us on the multiple ways you can avoid a boss attack but this run made me feel kinda sad over how little depth is in ds3 bosses' move set in terms of how to deal with them. It's just rolling in any direction you want (with a few exceptions). No positioning, almost no side strafing, almost no running from, and almost no punish in between delayed attacks. Just roll the same strings and R1. Like you said I didn't feel like I learnt any of the bosses any better than I already did. Very entertaining nonetheless. Thank you

  • @ClydeNut

    The perfect example in my mind of why runbacks are ultimately detrimental to one’s enjoyment of a boss actually comes from one of Elden Ring’s few runbacks. In Selia Crystal Cave in Caelid you fight the Fallingstar Beast for the first time, and even with shortcuts it’s one of the only true runbacks in the game where you have to constantly deal with those annoying kindred of rot enemies. It was partially because of this runback that I fucking hated Fallingstar initially and thought he was one of the worst bosses. Later on however you fight another version of Fallingstar in Mt. Gelmir, this time with more HP and a bigger moveset. A harder fight overall, but there’s no runback as the site of grace is right outside of the arena. As a result, I love Fallingstar now and think he’s one of the coolest bosses in the game, because I could actually get to know it without a constant headache. Long runbacks mostly just make the boss at the end so much more stressful for no good reason, putting you in a position where you’re less likely to take risks and more likely to play in a passive, boring fashion just so you don’t have to do the goddamn runback again. It promotes the idea of a boss as a chore you need to do to get to the next level, rather than what it should be: an eventful reward for making it through that level.
    Also the people who complain about how they want runbacks can just choose to spawn at a site of grace further away or not use the stakes of Marika if they don’t want to, the people who “miss” runbacks can literally make their own runbacks now, though I’m guessing most still don’t because deep down they know it adds nothing.

    • @An_Euco
      @An_Euco ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I've liked the idea of runbacks in the previous games because in those games the bosses themselves are usually very simple. A runback with some enemies can bring complexity to the experience of beating the boss in a way that could not have been achieved otherwise in those games by encouraging you to find ways to get back to the boss quicker and without getting hit on the way. It was just another thing to learn for me.
      ER is different in this regard because its bosses are actually very good on their own; they would never need such an extra part to it since learning the boss itself is already a complex, complete experience most of the time. That doesn't mean it never added anything in other games to some people.

    • @TigoODonnell
      @TigoODonnell ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The idea of run backs in Demon’s and Dark Souls 1 especially were to add to the complexity of the world. It felt fine because shortcuts were built into many of the levels allowing the player to circumvent much of the run back while also making players focus on interacting with the world. Those games, especially DS1 were also far less linear than the rest of the series, and DS1 is essentially a Metroidvania. The latter games due to enemy composition and more linearity within their level design mean that run backs feel more tedious because the exploration has lost that lack of depth. It also doesn’t help that the bosses in Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls have a different philosophy compared to the rest of the series.

    • @ClydeNut
      @ClydeNut ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TigoODonnell yeah it seems like those older games prioritized level design over good bosses whereas it’s kind of flipped around these days (even though the legacy dungeons and caves are still expertly designed). I’m pretty ok with that though.

      This was my biggest pro on the catacombs and con on the caves. The catacombs having the boss door right next to the grace but needing to go find a lever to open it deeper in the dungeon was a stroke of genius and I wish they had done something similar with all the minor dungeons

    This video made me realise how I always thought Ds3 boss damage was fine. But that was only because I always thought armor is some cosmetic bs that doesnt do much. Seeing how many hits you can tank just with starting armor is actually insane.
    Also for Twin Princes there's this old really cool speedrun tech where you unlock, circle to the right, bait a slow swing and attack letting your weapon pull you out of most of their attacks it can make this fight super easy just requires some getting used to (also works on heavy weapons I do this in every playthrough).
    This also makes it way easier to see what they do next after they teleport. -->Very intuitive if you ask me (ykyk hahaha)

    Personally, I rate the difficulty of Souls games based on both the areas and bosses. I find Demon's Souls to be by far the easiest, followed by DS1. The former because both the enemies and bosses just can't live up to what comes after, while the latter for similar reasons to a lesser degree and more because of how insanely breakable it is with different builds and/or tactics. Also, I find the "I haven't played in a while" thing not really reassuring. If you asked me if I could confidently beat Artorias on my first try, despite having not played DS in over a year and only played it 5 times (never mind 2000+ hours), I would honestly respond with 'yes, I could'.
    Overall, I find DS3 easier than ER and Sekiro, but more difficult than all the others. BB is brutal at the start in Central Yharnam before taking a nosedive with a rocket propelled missile strapped to its back, with only a few places where it gets notably harder. The enemy encounters especially seem to get progressively easier.
    DS2 has one of the easiest boss rosters in the series, and while its enemy configurations are relatively challenging, it's not that bad if you play it more like an RPG and use your tools effectively.
    DS3, for me, has some of the hardest enemies and combat encounters, and one of the harder boss selections in the series.
    Also, I really don't have an issue with distinguishing Lorian's teleporting attacks; I just always wait for him to appear first and then dodge based on the wind-up, and it works perfectly well. Don't know what to tell ya.
