    I’m mostly a rock player but this is phenomenal advice for learning to play over changes regardless of genre. This kind of thinking ahead on chord changes is really improving my playing and making it far less boring.
    Thank you so much.

    *How to start soloing over a II V I with arpeggios*
    In this lesson I will take a II V I give you some arpeggios and an approach to make melodies over the progression so that you clearly follow the chords. I also wrote a few examples of the licks using the arps to give you some ideas.

    Via this lesson you candDownload a Free C major II V I backing track from QuistJam :

    Hey Jens, I had some time today to watch videos and this one came on after one of them. Its AMAZING to watch the GREAT evolution thats occurred on here with your videos. This was obviously one of the first ones. You've really built this channel from the grass roots, early days of TH-cam. I didn't realize how long you've been on here. This is an inspiration to everyone out there wanting to start their own channel. Your teaching method was always GREAT. The channel has evolved to not only great teaching, but now it's filled with excellent editing, wit, and humour. It's gone beyond just great teaching, it's entertaining.

    I'm really enjoying your lessons, Jens. You have a great way of explaining the concepts and well thought out techniques for applying and practicing them. Keep up the great work.

      Thanks Jens, greatly appreciated.
      In the video you touch on practicing arpeggios using alternating note patterns, rather than straight up and down, enabling you to use them more melodically.
      I'm stuck practicing straight up and down, and find using arpeggios to create melody quite challenging. Could you outline a practice routine to help with this?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe pick a note (like the third?) and try to write 10 lines that start on that note? Try to play the when you can then try to use them in an improvisation.
      You need to do this a few times probably but it will help expand your vocabulary greatly.
      Let me know how it turns out! :)

      @@JensLarsen This is the exact point i was trying to understand, know which notes to use in advance, so i can use my ear training and my musical perception to create my own melodies and licks based in what i "hearing" in my mind, not being stuck in scales like i was and am until today, in all those 10 years of guitar learning. I know it will take years to master, but i think is the most important thing a professional musician must looking foward. Thanks!

    Thank you very much for your lessons! I just recently discovered your channel and I wish, I had known it earlier. When I started to learn jazz guitar three years ago, my motivation dropped after a while because all the content that was available to me at the time was either too complicated or not applicable (because it did not sound like jazz at all). Because of your lessons I am starting again - so thank you so much!

    damn. wish someone had told me this 15 years ago. I never took lessons and youtube wasnt so big back then. i gave up on jazz cuz i was just totally confused. Instead i just went ahead and learned a bunch of Dylan songs. Certainly not a waste of time, but I am happy to be getting back into this stuff with some actual guidance this time. thank you!

    one of my favorite channels , i'd like a topic treating the poetry within a jazz standard improvisation , like decoration of the melody and remaining faithful to the theme , not just aproaching the change like a normal backing track .

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Moncef Fadal Thanks Moncef! That's an interesting subject for sure! Might be a bit difficult to really make a lesson on but I'll start thinking about it :) Thank you!

    • @moonn4108
      @moonn4108 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you .
      because the struggle is real , going from theory to creating long beautiful lines is realy difficult . some say that charlie parker's and other greats transcription books should be analyzed , and it's always to transcribe ourselves instead of using transcription book for ear benefits.

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moncef Fadal I guess it depends on the sort of melodies. I think that if you can analyze things melodically and theoretically and then take an aspect of that when trying to compose lines or improvise you can improve a lot. That is for big part how I do it, I think. :)

    • @moonn4108
      @moonn4108 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks that's the most interessting part about jazz in my opinion .
      i got recently into transcribing using CAPO i realy nice app you should check btw.
      i have a slightly off topic question , since i haven't found a video on bebop scales in your channel .
      is it important to learn different bebop scales and not just throw a passing tone whever i like ?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CAPO? I'll look it up :)
      I don't really use bebop scales, though the system works for some people. I've often seen people use it as an excuse to run up and down scales and not making an effort to make a melody.
      For me it worked just as well to just work on using passing notes in a nice way.

    J, Thanks so much, seems to be a long time since the last post on this video. Seeing how you have set it up for far away strangers...well it is almost intuitive, being new to this whole phenom, I appreciate your time and efforts to bring this 'sound', which goes from this jazz to...anywhere really in different genres of music. I have been following your weeklies for a few months now and am finally able to connect the dots(notes). As a result, 'am motivated to continue continuing. :) cheers
