    You are the ultimate teacher! The paper stretching has always been a question for me! After watching this I feel better able to do it! I have never used larger sheets of paper, now hopefully I will branch out beyond 9 by 12! Thank you for your sharing your talents! Karen Dirmish, learner

    You answered my questions about stretching. I always was afraid of the packing tape but it looks manageable. Thank you!

    Great information I’ve never done this and tend to use a heavier paper. However, I’m going to try it on my practice paper.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it does work on lightweight paper, As long as it’s actually watercolour paper. I have a stack of 90lb watercolour paper which is great when it’s stretched, and it’s worth the effort.

    Thanks for this, i bought some 90lb paper not realising how much it would buckle ❤

      Ah yes, it’s just bound to happen. Hope the stretching works for you. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it becomes second nature!

    Good information, Diane. Thank you. I'm going to try this on my Daler Rowney Mixed Media Paper. It's hefty enough at 169# so I'm hoping for good results when I attempt one of your flower tutorials.

    Do you take the tape off before you paint? Also is it hard to get the tape off?? Thanks! 😊

    Thank you! I've always been a bit mystified by stretching my paper and had a few people tell me I needed to submerge my board and paper in a massive sink (not very helpful when I don't own one). I've never really known what I was doing and have subsequently ruined a fair bit of paper trying to work it out. You made this look so easy! 😁 When you've finished, do you need to cut the artwork off the board or can the tape be peeled off?

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, and thanks for your comments and question! I’m glad the video was helpful. Yes, some people advocate submerging the paper in a tray of water, but that’s not easy for most homes, and not necessary. You need to wet the board (varnished plywood is the best surface) and then BOTH sides of the paper carefully making sure you don’t leave any gaps. Then let it sit a few minutes, then apply the tape. You will soon find out whether you have left too much water on the paper, a little bit of experience goes a long way! Once your painting is finished it is best to cut around the edge of the paper taking half the tape with it, which acts as a reinforcement for the painting if it is going to be framed. OR you can cut the tape off the painting instead. It won’t peel off like masking tape does. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

    How do you get the gummed tape off the paper when you’ve finished? Thanks in advance. X

    Thank you! I have a large bamboo chopping board, do you think I could use that as a base? Would I need to treat the wood I wonder? 🎀💕

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would work fine, and you're best with an unfinished/untreated surface as the paper tape won't adhere to anything shiny or greasy.

  • @janstittleburg

    I am overwhelmed by the variety of choices in brown paper tape! A non-coated surface or reinforced or water activated or ??? And how wide, your tape is quite wide compared to the painter's tape I've struggled with, would a wider tape hold the wet paper better? My tape seems to come up at the edges. I've seen a bunch of videos on stretching paper, this one seems to be about the most logical and simple method, so it must be right! Thank you for posting this.

      Hi jan, I’ll get you an answer momentarily!!!

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the kind of tape you need Jan for this technique of paper stretching. amzn.to/3yms2NM As well, you need a board which isn't too slick, so the paper tape can stick to it. Hope you have success!

    Thank you so much. I have not ever seen stretching done in this way! Fantastic. I use a heavier hot pressed paper. Would it work just as well on hot or cold pressed paper? Excited to try! Going to look for a ply board fit for purpose. Thank you again. Naomi xxx

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Naomi, thanks so much for your comments, and I hope that you find this method works for you. Couple of points which I can’t remember whether I mentioned in the video, if you use plywood make sure it’s been varnished or painted first otherwise it will be difficult to get the paper to stick and to get it off afterwards. You could also use Gator board. And make sure that your craft paper tape is nice and sticky. There are tapes out there which don’t have enough glue on them. Good luck!

    This was so helpful! Does it make a difference if you take the time to stretch the 140 lb paper?

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, stretching is always a good idea for a painting where you are going to use a lot of water x

  • @bonamiller395

    Thank you so much. This was very informative. I do have a question. Once it is stretched, can it be saved to use at a later date or does it need to be used fairly quickly. I am thinking of doing several to have on hand for whenever I get the urge to paint.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your comments! To reply to your question, yes, I always prepare a stack of stretched paper in one session to have on hand. It will last forever really. I do recommend it!!

      @@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks so much for the quick reply. I forgot to ask one other question. I assume that you leave the stretched paper on the board you used to stretch it. ls that correct

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that’s right, and you cut it off when your done , using a craft knife.
