Omg Rani Mukherjee did a Kajol on this one! Just after she had shown so much poise on Koffee with Karan. I started off loving the podcast and now I am a bit bummed. I wanted to hear everyone else more but sigh! That snub to Prithvi was so inappropriate- this is a round table not a debate. Look at Rima, what class!

    • @charanakula4817

I didn't get why rani said what she said, after all if he's been invited then his views has to be respected. Rani, Karan and taapsee will give many interviews to the point of having verbal diarrhea. The least they could do is just let Prithvi have his say and move on. For me Prithvi meant that Indian cinema his more potential and 100x chance to get recognition and respect all over the world. If a small country that doesn't have freedom of speech or is problematic when it comes to cinema, still filmmakers make wonderful films that reaches high level of respect. Indian cinema has all the resources to do better than a country like Iran.

Most of the kids wake up at 6 or 7 to go to school and she is not waking up in a tent in the cold but in an air conditioned room. Hope she learnt something by listening to others about how they struggled for years to make a film.

Tbh Prithvi mentions the Iranian movies because of the rawness. 12th fail is a great story but acting wise, Iranian actors and directors are on another level. Indian Cinema has a long way to go for audience to become that mature to consume raw action.

I really enjoyed the roundtable more because of Jude, Prithvi and Rima - such underrated gems.
I also felt Rani did not understand what Prithvi was trying to say, India has the potential to be the place where best cinemas could be made and there are no shortage of ideas/stories but how many of those ideas are being translated into films? Coming from big studios like Yash raj I don't think she understands how people who try to make the 'different kind of films' have to struggle to make audience even acknowledge such films, I think Prithvi was trying to suggest how Iranians pick ideas from their real life scenarios and translate them into such movies, whereas, the bigger studioheads in India are very worried about the business aspect of cinemas, I mean out of 100s of films made, 12th fail was only one such movies that she could quote which was again made by a prolific filmmaker like VVC.
I felt he was trying to say that within the cinema ecosystem, there is a need to support all types of cinemas instead of giving thrust to movies that is targeted at only making money, this would be 'healthier' for everybody.

Rani misunderstood Prithvi's point of view. I see the family in A Separation directed by Asghar as my own family and identify with their story and characters the same way I relate to Malayalam cinema. Rani should understand that good storytelling that is rooted are important than budget based films. He means that Iranian films have low budget and they struggle to exist when filmmakers and writers are working in a country where freedom of speech or their own profession is threatened by the government. Still they make good movies that found audience around the world.

Rani had more of a valid point. If you make Iranian style movie, it will definitely travel to film festivals but its very hard to make money and here Prithvi is struggling with that with his current movie also and getting audiences in theater. Rather follow what we already have in roots of India and make it more Indian than any other country. Make realistic but also make it attractive to get audiences in theater.

Agreed that we had filmmakers like Satyajit Ray here in India. Prithvi's noble hope is to get back there and making such rooted films again.. Prithvi sir is already doing that. Rani Mukherjee can't defend present day Indian cinema by taking example of a great past. How many years can we simply push on with the great Ray's shadows? She clearly misunderstood Prithvi sir's concerns. He didn't speak anything wrong to offend her. Hope she gets to watch Prithvi's brilliant Railway Children, Pinki Elli?, Seventeeners, sure her notion on him will change!

I’ve watched Animal twice more and managed to pick up so many details that Sandeep had mentioned in his interviews. This man is a genius in terms of filmmaking, even RGV said so. Exactly. I hated the interview right from there. Rani, with her privilege is not aware of where his words are coming from. I think Rima tried to support him in a way without offending the high table panel. Saying, we should be telling films from all over the country by mixing it with her aspirations of making big cinema.
I think people are scared of KJ. Otherwise, Tapsee, Alphonse, Rima, and Prithvi would've agreed to the point of Iranian films.
Rani shouldn't have been in this panel at all. And making films around that 1% should stop. One 12th Fail, or another small Hindi film is not enough.

    • @Finnola
      @Finnola 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

He has a point but rani is just saying things that isn't practical. She also misunderstood him, Indian cinema has different individual industries based on their own community. It's very different as an audience I'm confused as to what defines an "indian" film. I know malayalam and Tamil cinema due to the community, culture and language understanding. I can relate to their stories, even though I've no idea what happens in Assam I could still relate it due to good storytelling. That comes down to ott exposure of various films around the world when even though nobody is informed about Iran, their movies have resonated with everyone. I see a family in A Separation by Asghar as my own family and identify with their story and characters the same way I relate to Malayalam cinema.

Yeah brother actually he is genius people may troll him or hate him but he analyses the film like a genius who actually knows the craft of directors and his vision example he talked about animal movie. Making a simple narrative story into vast and complex content with that suspense and brilliance of Sandeep as director with great originality and great music sense. Putting a sad and emotional song in the climax during the fight sequence between ranvijay and Abrar fits perfectly. If he is at time of scripting or narrating the story to an actor he may find it odd but that is what a brilliant director thinks doing such a thing which people may think odd at the beginning that talks about the director's originality.
If we talk about Punjab pind scene that is such a beautiful scene with Ranbir entering with that Punjabi song and leaving the pind with his cousin with use of that background score using electric drums. When i saw the teaser first two expressions of Ranbir I said to my friend that I am sold. But people talk about misogynistic and feminist. A movie should be watched for entertainment purposes not what impact he will put on society. A movie can't change the mindset of people. It changes those who already have bad thoughts in their mind and those who have good thoughts in their mind.
Then we have to talk about films made in Hollywood like knock knock, wild, roma etc they also showed misogyny and feminism a director with that originality should not be trolled I think

I'm glad that Jude Anthony explained the experience of going out in the awards circuit in the west. At the end its not as straightforward as watching and liking the movies. There are too many movies for juries to see and then choose, at the end most of the movies who have promotion dollars can only go so far as making it to final films choosen for Oscar nominations. Also juries have their top countries like European cinema and then in Korea and Japan from Asia. Theres a preference for filmmakers like Pedro Almodovar from Spain and others who have only done non-english films but are household names in the west.

I somehow did not like the patronizing attitude of Rani. She could be an achiever. But, the way she ranted after a participant shared his point of view and going on prompting words when Rima was expressing her opinion was a bit much to take. They, in my opinion, are greater achievers as they came up without any patronizing.

As a huge fan of Indian Cinema, (all languages) it is disheartening to hear OTT are not taking "smaller" films because often the 'smaller" films don't play in my city (Minneapolis). OTT is the only way I would see an Assamese film and the Kanada films talked about here. (We got Kantara and KGF) Its also hit or miss whether we get Malayalam films playing here. Its tragic that DVDs are rarely made too. I wish OTT platforms made sure EVERYTHING they stream is subtitled.

Seems like Prithvi sees Indian cinema having better chances to win oscars if Iranian cinema has 2 and also the recognition and respect. If Iranian cinema can go from being anonymous to that level of recognition and respect than India can do 100x better and has more potential than Iran. Yeah right?… even I made a similar comment… mr Prithvi must have watched vast amount of indian cinema and Iranian cinema and he must have arrived at a conclusion that Iranian cinema is better than Indian cinema… atleast in his opinion…. So he will be in a right position to compare indian and Iranian cinema and justify with logical facts why in his opinion Iranian cinema is better than Indian cinema..: in a general scenario, Rani’s opinion could be different from what Prithvi said… but whether her opinion was formed in a right way with sufficient amount of case studies? To my understand, NO…. I am damn sure she would not have seen not even a single Iranian movie, let alone watching various cinema across the world…. But went to bluntly bragging indian cinema is best in the world… NO, unless you equally know each and every kind of other cinema all over the world … you cannot say whether our Indian cricket team is best in the world or not, when you don’t know about Australian cricket team, South African cricket team etc…. This is the problem with majority of Indians… we don’t arrive at opinions based on proper logical, rational and reasonable facts… rather we just go with what we know as the “facts” 😂… we don’t accept the reality particularly if it is against our country or culture or religion

When Prithvi talked about Iranian cinema, he didn't mean disrespect to Indian cinema. Most of our directors and actors get inspired from Hollywood etc. He was merely suggesting to explore Iranian cinema as an alternate. No need to bring diversity card of India and say that we have no need to learn from others. Not the way to express a point. 12th fail is a biopic and as a consequence has to come from our roots. If she had brought up a Vettrimaran movie and asked Prithvi to watch such fictional movies grounded in roots, it would have made sense to me. Felt that it is truly uncalled for to dismiss a co-artist like that.
