This film was my gateway drug. I actually saw it in theaters when it first came out. I guess I was naive and didn't think other countries could make such beautiful films. After that my world was opened up to tons of great movies I never would have even considered otherwise.
A masterpiece! I saw this back in 2000 when it had its limited run across the US right before Oscar season. Only one theater was showing the film in the entire state of Minnesota and they chose the best theater, the Uptown, which was this vintage movie theater from the golden age of Hollywood. Only one screen with red curtains on a stage. Second floor balcony. No stadium seating. Had Dolby Digital sound which was great. Anyway, we entered through the side doors because the front entrance was blocked. Literally zombies! It was mad! Remember: this was before online ticketing, reserved seating and even cellphones! Dad sacrificed himself to wait in line to purchase tickets and we looked all over to find him in the movie theater while people were running up and down trying to find any available seats. Luckily, he was able to save us seats. Theater was packed like sardines. Probably broke a few fire codes. The best movie experience I had in my life. People laughing and cheering. Clapping at all the fights. Of course, tears at the end with a huge round of applause. This was cinema at its finest in my 38 years on this earth.
House Of Flying Daggers and Hero are both a MUST now.

The entire concept of the Force and Jedi Knights and Padawans, etc. was directly lifted from Eastern Asia culture, so anyone who knows their Star Wars stuff shouldn't give you crap for making a connection! xD
Yep. In high school my teacher was trying to explain to a classroom of dumbfounded teenagers the difference in eastern ideology. The concept of god not as a personified single character but as something around you everywhere. Our brains were like 🧱🧱🧱 until she sighed, "I hate to make this comparison... but it's like the Force in star wars." And that's when we all got it.
Star Wars is so popular because it's the west's copy of eastern storytelling. You can't watch 2 magically talented warriors fight with bright colored lasers to operatic music and have their fight be so epic it moves the area around them and not think "..this is so anime. this is awesome!!!"

I remember seeing this on the big screen at my local art house cinema in Dublin, back when it was released. And literally hearing gasps in the audience when the two women are chasing each other across the rooftops - never seen anything like that before. The real acid test came when I went to see it again, and brought my brother along. He hated subtitles etc and said he’d probably fall asleep...he was absolutely riveted. The score alone is a poetic masterpiece. Great reaction guys.
I can't believe someone actually finally reacted to this movie in its entirety! This is one of my favorite movies overall, so emotional and beautiful. I'm pre-liking this movie and am giving you much more credit for taste of film. I do want to say beforehand that I'd say that what I take from this is that there was an ancient martial arts form that could transcend scientific knowledge as we currently know it, and maybe it was best that it died with him since it would certainly be exploited.
Afterward: Ang Lee directed "Brokeback Mountain" which again won for Cinematography and other technical categories, not to mention being a great film overall. The choreographer, Yuen Wo-Ping, did this, "The Matrix" and then "Kill Bill." You definitely need to buy the soundtrack as it is the perfect component to calm down/meditate or whatever. To know that every actor was actually there, doing their own stunts adds so much. The narrative is very much so coherent. There's a mystery, but once it's resolved we begin to know more about every character and follow each to their natural conclusion. And as for the pronunciation of Li Mu Bai, you have it right except that Bai is like "bye."
I may buy a Patreon thing just because of this, just FYI. Thank you so much for doing "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Seriously.
Hero (2002) will fill all your fight choreography needs. It's also a stunningly beautiful movie, every frame a painting. Please, consider adding it to your list, based on your reviews of Crouching Tiger you will both love Hero.

Fun fact: the actress who played Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei) is one of the first female kung fu movie stars. She paved the way for a lot of women in action films.
You guys got it. When I saw this at the movies, one person got up the first time people started flying and yelled at the screen, "This is BS!!!" and left the theater. I felt sad for him (and angry for having the movie interrupted).

This falls under - but is a bit more layered and has more depth to it - the banner of 'Wuxia', which is basically the Chinese martial arts genre that incorporates fantastical and mythical elements like near-flight and so forth. In layman's terms, it's their version of superheroes, but carries the weight of nationalistic pride in their traditional martial arts.
Yea their early comparison to jedi were really not far off.
If I recall correctly this was first time Chow Yun Fat did a proper martial arts movie, he was more well known for action movies, including sterling classics “Hard Boiled” and “The Killer”, which you absolutely have to check out. Proper action cinema.

This was my personal #1 movie from 2000, and while I really liked Gladiator (which won Best Picture), it wasn't even in my Top 10 for that year. That really was a great year for movies looking back on it.
Dana says- Although, my personal rating would be a 9.5/10, I agree completely with your reasons for appreciating this film. A lot of people who make fun of the "floating" quality of the master fighters don't understand that it is lore that this skill existed in some true masters of the past. Because they are uneducated, they make fun of what they don't understand. It is such an incredibly beautiful film, I'm glad to see reactors who see the amazing artistry displayed in it. Zhang Ziyi's acting will always consume you. Love her. And Michelle Yeoh is standing the test of time.
When the two women fight, that was one of the best portrayals I've ever seen in film of a match between an unbeatable weapon and an expert fighter.
The fact that she uses the power of the sword against its wielder, knowing it will cut through a weaker sword so smoothly that she would still have force enough to reach the neck of her oponent? Great.
Yuen Woo-ping's fight choreography meshes perfectly with Ang Lee's directing. It's clear from the scene that Yu Shu Lien outmatches Jen Yu in every way -- showing perfect swords(wom)anship with a variety of weapons. Without the Green Destiny sword, Jen would be nothing. The scene highlights one of the central themes of the movie: Jen is incapable of letting go -- dreaming the wulin dream (without ever truly experiencing it) she is incapable of giving up the sword. She'd rather forfeit her own life, as exemplified in the scene where she jumps from a cliff to retrieve the sword that Li Mu Bai had freely thrown away. That's the great antithesis of the film: Li Mu Bai has reached a point in his inner progress that makes it necessary for him to abandon the sword -- as he states towards the beginning of the movie, he has reached an end point in his meditation. To progress further, he needs to abandon the sword (and with it, the memory of his comrade of old, Meng Sizhao) and finally embrace his love to Shu Lien. Jen is the exact opposite: She's about to get married off to a guy she doesn't love, and she's realistic enough to see that her time in the desert, with Lo, was just a beautiful dream. Her solution is to hold on -- tightly -- to the only thing that seems real to her: the (aptly named) Green Destiny sword. Li Mu Bai wants to let go; Jen wants to hold on. This is also a battle of the generations: Shu Lien doesn't want to injure Jen because she sees a former version of herself in her: Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai have spent too much time holding on the the memory of their lost friend, which kept them apart. Jen is now making the very same mistake. The genius -- and I mean: genius -- of the movie is that it encapsulates these complex relationships in scenes like the one shown above. I could write a book about this movie, I really could. It's closer to my heart than any other movie. Thank you for uploading.
I love films that remind us that cinema can indeed be an art form. This is one of those.
The reason it’s so beautiful and poetic to watch is that there is no CGI or green screen at all, all done with wires. I think it’s a very spiritual film
During the second fight sequence between Michelle and Zhang, hardly anyone noticing that she only had the upper hand because Michelle held back soooooo many times....
There is a reason for the flying... those who are true to themselves and are freer fly higher. Michelle Yeoh cannot fly as high as Jen because she has emotional baggage.... she cannot profess her love to Li Mu Bai whereas Jen loves passionately...that is why she flies more freely. That is how Ang Lee explained it.

I remember going in with a friend to the cinema thinking no one care about a foreign film. Both of us were already big wuxia fans so it was day one watch for us. The only theater to play it was a Regal that I actually use to work at during my high school days. When we walk into the seating area to our surprise it was pack. We had to sit in the corner right in the front row. Our neck got a workout that day. These screen were huge to and we still enjoyed it. Bought it on dvd, than on bluray, and now 4k which is probably my last purchase of it.
After that a bunch of these type of movies started hitting the big screen. My favorite out of all of them was Fearless director cut with Jet Li.
If you like this kind of style, Hero (2002) with Jet Li is probably the ultimate expression of wushu style movies.
Kung Fu Hustle. It's not only hilarious, but has some of the most visually impressive, creative fights I've ever seen. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Kung Fu Hustle are my personal favorites from China.

In the first "action fight " scene with the thief and Michelle, Michelle actually broke her leg and she was out of commission for a few months, but she recovered and finished the rest of the movie...from a former Miss Malaysia to one of the most recognized female action stars around...

This film is what first introduced me to Chow Yun Fat, Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh and to this day I believe they are highly underrated actor/actresses. The film score is grade A quality, can't go wrong with Yo-Yo Ma on the cello.

The fight scenes in this movie are well choreographed. My mom saw this movie on the Ovation Network and she says it was pretty good. Fun fact: Director Ang Lee would later Direct the controversial superhero epic HULK, starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly. He even won Best Director for Broke back Mountain, and visually stunning adventure Life Of Pi, which won 4 Oscars, Including Best Director.
I'd love for them to do Life of Pi.
I'm always amazed by the number of 'new' film aficionados discovering movies for the first time. I try to keep my cynicism of 'making a living from TH-cam' out of the picture and focus on the positives of young people getting on board with the idea of good or interesting movies being worth watching instead. It's rare anymore to find something made recently which is pure in vision, original, and entertaining. In the words of John McClane - "Welcome to the party pal!"
fun fact the whole idea of the Force and the Master/Padwan of Starwars was based of the Chinese martial arts legends - the Force is Chi as both are an unseen yet fundamental part of the universe and it was believed if you could master the flow of chi within and around yourself you could do a whole host of supernatural things like those seen in the film plus control the elements like lighting and fire

The sword fight between the two leading women is the best sword fight ever put on film in my humble opinion. This was the first dvd I ever bought and it was the only dvd I owned for a few months while I had no television, so I watched it a lot.
This movie will forever be one of my favourites. I remember being a teen and watching this in the theatres and being blown away by it's beauty and awesomeness of the fights.
Ziyi Zheng is in this movie as well as Hero with Jet Li and House of Flying Daggers. All came out in the early 2000’s and beautiful movies!

That final fight with our two female leads was conceptually a masterpiece. Michelle Yeoh's character was the more skilled fighter but couldn't get around the strength of the Green Destiny Sword. The sword kept getting in the way of her winning the fight outright until she masterfully uses the weapon's greatest strength, it's sharpness, against her opponent to win. That whole idea of turning negative to positive comes up frequently in some these martial arts films and it's something that I ABSOLUTELY love. It really shows how much thought goes into the individual narrative of each fight scene. Jet Li's movie Fearless has some great examples of what i'm talking about and is an excellent film as well. Please react.
It's a common theme in martial arts, use your enemy's strength against them. Whatever they have that makes them strong, find a way to turn it to your advantage. She eventually did.
Jen's Chinese name means Little Dragon,her Jade comb represents a dragon's soul & the sword represents freedom, what a wee dragon needs the most. She is fighting against everyone wanting to control some aspect of herself & soul- her parents,Jade fox, social conformity, lu mu Bai, even her lover lu who wants to keep her in the desert. The end scene is where she finally choose to be as her dragon nature dictates - to be free. In this fantasy world, she's most likely elevated as either an immortal or a goddess. Like how padawans,through time, force spirituality & hard work, become jedi masters in the Star wars universe. ;-)
Fun facts:
*This was actually a Hollywood movie. Plan A was to shoot it in English and they actually shot a few scenes before they decided it was too weird. They decided to shoot it in Madarin instead... which much of the cast didn't speak. Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are Hong Kong stars where they speak Cantonese. They had to learn their lines phonetically
*Ang Lee is of Taiwanese descent but was born in The US. His other big notable hit was "The Life of Pi" He also did the first Hulk movie at Universal, which, though flawed, is worth seeing.
*This is fight choreographer Yuen Woo Ping's second Hollywood movie after training the cast and staging the fights in "The Matrix"
*Based on a historical adventure novel written in 1942 that is actually book 4 in a series of 5. A lot of the movies in this genre are based on classic literature, adventure and fantasy novels.
*"Masters and Padawans - this is Star Wars! I'm going to get roasted in the comments now..." George Lucas was a fan of Kurosawa Samurai movies and gets much of Jedi mythos from those. Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi and the droids were based on the lead characters of "The Hidden Fortress"
I'm so glad you two enjoyed this film. I was in college when it came out and it's the only foreign language film I recall that my friends and I all went to see together multiple times while it was in the theater. It's such a beautiful film and the first to use this flying combat style. Films like House of Flying Daggers and Hero came out later using the same style, but this was the film that started it all. Ang Lee is a great director and five years later he went on to win the Best Direction Oscar for Brokeback Mountain. His filmography is incredibly varied and pretty impressive.

"Hero" is even more beautiful and even more epic. The first Chineese film to be Number One in the American box office. i remember buying a bootleg version of it, as it wasnt released in the West for two years. The most expensive Chineese fim made at the time at $31 American dollars but worth every penny. The colours throughout are so memorable, thats how I remember it, through a colour sensation, and of course, the "arrow" scenes.

When I saw this in the theater, people were weeping at the end of the movie.
And about the flying parts in the movie.... You can see that only those who study the Wudan can do it... and not all in the same way. In the first fight, for example, yo can see that Jen (Zhang Ziyi) can fly more and better that Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) because the more advanced study on Wudan, and also you can see that Jen always try to fly to escape while Yu Shu Lien try to down her to the ground. This also is a reference to Jen's youth trying to fulfill her wishes for freedom and adventure without a conscience and Shu Lien's maturity wanting to teach her to "put her feet on the ground" and be responsible and respectful. It´s a beautiful scene with a lot of meaning, not only a fight scene.
I agree. Not only is the action top notch, it's not just a bunch of cool moves, it actually shows the personalities of the characters and tells a story within the choreography.
I have been watching so many movies from all generes because of this channel and it has broaden my horizon ☺️

Wow, I can’t believe neither of you have seen this! Such a classic. Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Ziyi Zhang all deserved more recognition for their master-class acting.

This and the Bond film 'Tomorrow Never Dies' sold me on Michelle Yeoh. She's the reason I now watch Star Trek Discovery.
For film lovers, they really haven't watched a lot of movies.
The floating is from Chinese folklore. Chi can make your body lighter when you want it to.. and the chi moves in spirals which is why you get circular and spiral movements. I read book when I was 17 called Chronicles of Tao which I can recommend which is a great story(/ biography), and gives lots of info on Chinese folklore.

It took me a long time to realize that the ending is a happy one...because the wish is the lovers never left the desert hence everyone's destiny changed.

'Curse of the Golden Flower' is a beautiful movie as well as some good fight scenes.

This was the first film I ever watched not in a language that was my own and I was downright transfixed. Just utterly spellbound by the poeticism of the fight choreography. It kickstarted (Heh, punny) my love affair with subtitled films and I’ve never looked back.
Ang Lee may be the director with the most diverse range we've got these days on our blue planet.

The amazing thing about the fight scenes, is that of the 3 main stars Michelle Yeoh is the only real Kung Fu master. The others learned a certain amount in acting school and are great actors.
This movie is a masterpiece. I think it was better than Gladiator. The battle between Shu Lien and Jen is the greatest fight ever. But it was a more than a martial arts film, it’s a revenge story, a love story, and basically a travel commercial for visiting China.

Welcome to Yuen Woo-ping, the master fight choreographer. He did the fights for this movie, The Matrix, Kill Bill, and a ton of Hong Kong films. I recommend "Fist of Legend".
haaaa this movie, one of my tops, together with The House Of The Flying Daggers, so beautiful movies, im a fan of oriental movies and i just loved them, the music and that fight scenes with both of the women, and to think that both were really fighting there, not stunt actor, i loved them.

Quite unlike any martial arts movie I've ever seen. The embodiment of Asiatic grace and poetry, and Buddhist simplicity.
I saw this when it first came out - and it still makes me cry in awe...
The fighting up in the bamboo trees were filmed on location atop the trees with wires. No green screen or CGI. Just pure wire-fu. Some other martial arts films during this time are Hero with Jet Li and House of Flying Dagger, again with Zhang Ziyi in both of those since she breaks out the role in CTHD.
For older films, with Michelle Yeoh are Yes, Madam with Cynthia Rothrock in her debut film, Wing Chun, and Tai Chi Master
Chow Yun Fat in A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, and Killer
Finally, an underrated and little known film with Sammo Hung called She Shoots Straight
This film will be always be cemented in my top 10 favorite films of all time.

Yall should watch Kung Fu hustle. Its a satirical kung fu movie made by Stephen Chow that pokes fun at the idea of the chosen hero trope in movies. It's also a really fun experience and a definitive movie in asian filmaking.

The "girl" is Zhang Ziyi. Her character is the governor's daughter -- so an aristocrat, and privileged. This film made her a mega-star. The "bandit" is Chang Chen.

Really blown away the first time I saw this. The fight scene with Michelle Yeoh in the barn is the best. They really cleared the weapons rack. Yeoh is probably one of not the best female martial artist around during her time.Once called the female Jackie Chan.
"City of God" is amazing!
Chinese cinema is loaded with spectacular wuxia (martial arts) films but few can match the profound quality of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", both thrilling with its action and deeply emotional with its characters and themes. Chow Yun Fat was famous for action films at the time but mainly of the shoot-em-up variety (He and John Woo were making trench coats cool long before Keanu Reeves entered the chat). The film put him on the map for a whole new audience of viewers that wouldn't have known him otherwise. Which probably lead to Hollywood calling him in for stuff like the 2009 Dragon Ball film, but we don't talk about that.
Omg, you could watch an entire library of awesome kung fu movies. there are SO MANY! the whole genre is sic.
