*PLEASE READ:* This video is NOT meant to encourage anyone to leave medicine. I just want to validate the feelings of those that have already been thinking of leaving. Particularly for those that find themselves in a really dark place, I just want you to know that there is hope for the future and you CAN leave that darkness behind. It may look different for different people, but you do not need to lose your life (literally or figuratively speaking) for the sake of a career, if you cannot see hope in the future of that career.
If you do actually want to leave, PLEASE be sensible about it. Please try to put a plan in place for how you can go back in if you change your mind, or if you decide you do prefer to do medicine after all. Please try to test something new out in a low-risk way before you make the leap to leave it all behind. You don't need to make high-risk moves in order to experience something outside of clinical medicine. You don't need to ruin your life, you just need to breathe a little. It could look like taking a break, going part-time, volunteering or freelancing for a few hours. You can experience these things and still know you can come back to your medical career if you change your mind. It's not running away, it'll always be there if you want to go back to it.
And lastly, for the medical students watching this, I know it's hard, I've been there, but if you can...I encourage you to try to finish the degree before you make any big moves. It is incredibly useful and will help you a lot in your future no matter which path you take. But I understand not everyone would like to continue on with the degree, and if that's your choice, that's ok too.
I just want to be able to help everyone watching this video. Whether you decide to stay or leave, both choices are ok. I just want you to have a full and happy life. 🙂

Thank you 🙏💕 i really felt how genuinely you want to help people through your videos. Im a 6th year medical student and during my clinical rotations i felt that the hospital environment was suffocating and that it was not my place. For now im thinking about doing an internship and then make my decision but at the same time im exploring other paths .

Thank you so much for this video, Hana. Needed it for reassurance and reminding myself of the reason why I left my career in clinical medicine. I am so much happier in my position as a ICT EMR coordinator at one of the renowned hospital here. So excited to explore more things i can do with my experience in the future!

When I got further in the medical course I started to become more honest but only with a few people. The first time I said that I did not like clinical medicine was in India, working on community health during my elective period at the start of the final year.(Having the choice of how to spend eight weeks was great.) Later in the fifth year I said it to two consultants who asked about career plans. On the other hand my parents thought at that time that everything was fine.

I was at medical school in Manchester, England. Anatomy was my least favourite subject and my results at the end of the first year were poor, so poor that I was nearly thrown out. I kept going for five years and somehow I got the degree. I never worked as a doctor. Now i am retired and it is 50 years since I entered medical school. Over the years I worked in health education, teaching and social care. I did some tutoring of science and maths. I ran musical sessions for young children and for older people.

I've had a largely supportive experience in all the departments I've rotated into. But over the past 10 years, I can see the pressures the NHS is under has definitely increased. The system is at fault here.

    • @hana.s.ali93
      @hana.s.ali93  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes you’re right I think the system being under pressure does have a lot to do with it, but there are also issues with the culture as a whole that I do think also need to be addressed. Not everyone has the same experiences of course, this is just personally what I went though and what I know many others go through too.

I'm really sorry. It's such a difficult place to be in. Sometimes the hardest part is feeling unsure of the decision you've made, but once you have a clearer path, it can really make things more bearable. I hope the path clears up for you soon. 🙏🏽

Hello dear.I am happy I came across your TH-cam channel.I am a medical student, but I had to repeat the year, which would require me to pay another tuition...my parents are still trying to raise funds for me, but my mind tells me it is impossible...They suggested that I go to a different, less expensive medical school. However, after three years, I really do not want to endure the stress of medical school again 😢.
I am really considering a different field other than medicine.
    I need some advice

Unfortunately, someone very close to me wants to leave her residency and feels so hopeless. But she cannot leave because of the huge debt from medical school that she otherwise cannot pay off unless she is able to make a large enough income.

My friend is a doctor who went through a costly and heartbreaking divorce, because he never had enough time for his wife as she claims, thank God they don't have kids. He took some months off and is now about to finish a great philosophical novel, he read to me some chapters and I found it super great, and I've been studying the literary landscape all my life. He told me that when he publishes his novel he'll quit medicine for good and will never go back for all the money in the world.

But if you mean that people don’t appreciate the hard work of doctors enough, then yes I do agree 🙂

@@hana.s.ali93 the medical branche in europe does much more turnover than all companies together. Doctors do not have the slightest involvement with their patients. Doctors are most evasive to touch human bodies and set diagnoses from behind a desk while asking questions. Doctors refuse to take in patients and refuse to give effective medicines. Doctors just cash in money for only referring to specialists. Doctors contribute to false sick leave for non ill patients .doctors keep on going totally unnessery treatments. On a yearly basis a small country like mine spends billions of euros on the medical branch. In all doctor are very well paid burocrats. Go to America and see what doctors all do to help patients and how caring and involved they are in a healing proces. Nurses with a degree in Europe are nothing more than witresses cleaning up and giving glasses of water. Go and see what medical tasks nurses and paramedics do in the US as a standard job. And how much they care even for people who hurt themselves. Medicine is a joke in Europe.

@@hana.s.ali93 The legislation and the state organization on the medical professions are not effective. 20 years ago I almost cut off my dad's leg with a chainsaw. We were in the woods and he was bleeding heavily so that I assessed that finding a clinic would be too late. I drove him to an old experienced GP who did the surgery on his table. All came good. A year or two ago I had pneumonia. I am not the kind of person to visit a doctor for no reason. I went to a young GP in the same street. She diagnozed me from far and told me to sit it out. Pardon? I went to that same old doctor who did my dad and she prescribed me some heayvy antibiotics. What is that with doctors and drugs All came good. Last winter I broke my ankle. Laying in fhe fields at 5AM there was not much else than to limp on it. I refused to see a doc that would send me to a clinic and just charge me. So I went to the hospital rightaway and they almost made a drama I walked on that broken ankle. To be honoust I first drove to Brussels and walk on it at my job for half a day. I did not tell that any doctor cuz also driving with a broken ankle would have been drama. So they spalked it. They ordered rightaway a nurse to set me a thiny surynge against bloodclothering. I refused that and asked the doctor to treat myself, which I did. What a costly affair medical branche is in Europe. After two weeks I got a checkup. After six weeks I got another check up. Everybody but than also everyone told me I had to do physiotherapy after that except for the doctors. What a an utmost crazy medical world. It is 9 months since and I still feel the pain and the strain in the muscles some days. I ain't planning to see a doctor for it, I will walk it out. Medicine is totally inconsistent.

Everyone struggles at some point in their career, only the lucky few hit the ground running from start to finish. Just like a seed, the shoots have to force their way through the overburden, to get their cotyledons to surface to find light while competing with bacteria, then penetrates its roots in the underburden to find and assimilate water. Then and only then it gets easier. It's better to play the long game, to start in small positions and work your way up bit by bit, assuming more and more responsibilities, making a higher and higher salary. As long as your current job can meet your current needs, its better to play the long game than instant gratification. I can't say for sure, but if there's such things as God and destiny, we might have been put in a job to meet the demands of the 4 purusharthas (kaam, aarth, moksha, dharma) to serve others and balance our karmas. It's lucrative to just opt to just making money on TH-cam, but that serves only one of our spiritual obligations, aarth (wealth). There's no harm in growing your TH-cam channel while being a Doctor, but I'm pretty sure that being a Doctor buys you way more credit in God's books.

The long game may certainly be the better path for some, as I’ve said many times in the video, if you can see a better path and brighter future for yourself in medicine, then I encourage you to stay! I don’t want doctors to leave medicine if they don’t feel they need to or want to. But doctors have also lost their lives due to the pressures of this career and I also don’t want that to happen.
I have not encouraged anyone to become a TH-camr or to just chase money in this video. I have said many times that you can help people by doing other things. I don’t make TH-cam videos just to earn money, I do it also to try to genuinely help people and I also just happen to love what I do. I also have built companies and social enterprises purely for the sake of helping others, like delivering free psychotherapy to the Middle East. I’m also applying to work for a non-profit. I actually would’ve earned more had I stayed in medicine but this is not my goal in life. Ironically if I only cared about a stable income, I would’ve stayed in medicine. It’s not right to assume that people who leave medicine or choose to do something they love are only in it for the money. This is a destructive and reductive picture to paint because it makes those who are really suffering in the profession feel judged if they do choose to leave, and no one should feel judged for wanting to simply be happy and live in mental peace.
