I think it might be because bronze (in a similar way to gold) can be dented up easily. Over time, if bronze medals were entirely bronze, the medal might get scratched or marked more easily than if it were what the alloy currently is. 329 gold medals would be worth 8.3 million dollars. A lot, but honestly billions are made on the Olympics off the back of those athletes. That really isn't a ton to ask for. But, gold is extremely heavy and soft. That much gold would not be easy to move, or wear around your neck.

Bronze is not copper and zinc, tin (stannum) would be used. A zinc-copper aloy would be brass in some form.
