So may be I would not need mountain bike. I haven't ridden a geared bike before and this would be my first instance, though in youtube videos I found Firefox road runner quite an enticing option but haven't tried on my own. My priority is to have comfortable riding experience without much hassles. I like speed but I'm not competing anywhere and at a stretch I need to be able to ride 20 kms. I haven't done much intercity riding..

It depends it's cassete or free wheel. If you have 6 and 7 speed, it comes with free wheel and if you want to change it to casette, you have to change the axel. And casettes usually comes with 8 speed or more.

While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

So buy a single speed ride for some time and save i guess about or 2-4k depends on your budget and buy a conversion kit
