I had the pleasure of knowing John well, particularly at the time this song was written.. The journey described in the song is a pleasant walk from a flat in Hughenden Road (Where much after-hours partying went on) to his house in Coburg Place, on the opposite side of Hastings' west hill.. A brilliant musician, & a character fondly remembered, & sadly missed around this town...
One of my best experiences of all time was watching John play his last festival at Bestival. Howard Marks was there. Fed on extremely rare Isle of White burgers from an almost extinct herd, drinking local cider and smoking a bit of the old you know what...it was one of the highlights of my life. A perfect hour.
I saw JM first in about 1974.....him Danny and a very stoned Koss....then about 15 more times through the 70s 80s 90s and noughties . Preferred him just on his own....A rare soul....When Jeff Beck passed away I felt just the same...desperately sad that I would never get to sit down in a hall and hear music pouring out of a musical genius
We were spoiled in the early 70s- Nick Drake, Roy Harper, John Martyn, Fairport, Sandy Denny, Paul Brady and many more- what a wealth of treasure! Musically, it was a great time to be young in the UK.
All great artists but you are forgetting about the 60s with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch and definitely not forgetting Davy Graham who kickstarted the British folk revival. All are guitar virtuoso’s
Absolutely!!! One of the finest musicians of all time. Love Bless the Weather. Always reminds me of someone from London that I miss very much. Cheers, Mick!!! 🇨🇦
My dad used to play in pubs with his friends around Wexford years ago. John Martyn apparently used to go out or was married to a woman from around the area and one night they're playing away and who walks in but John Martyn for a few pints and played a few songs with them including this. Such a good song, always the go-to one when I'm playing music with my dad. John was a real gem!
I have always loved this song, first heard it when I was 19 on fishing boat in Alaska. I love playing it on my mandolin,, an affordable rat hole 1930's style that I once used as a paddle, the builder fixed it after that for $50..Bid muddy mandolins, John Martyn was one of the best song writers ever..and Nick Drake...see you on the next planet I hope..
Yes, spoilt I was. Watching people like Nick Drake and John Martyn. Roy Harper is still with us. Had to watch some dross to realise how good these minstrels were.
The man could sing and play at such a level as to literally transport me out of whatever moment into a better state mentally and physically and spiritually. Sure appreciate all the John Martyn that has been provided here on YT.
quite some years ago at glasgow uni myself and two mates took johns sound gear to his stage we were just waiting in the crowd and got asked to help out, what a great night and he was a real nice guy
He once said he wrote this song when he was living in Hastings (Sussex). He would catch the night train from London and would arrive at the last hill before the town just as the sun was coming up in the morning .. his home was just "over the hill".
This song reminds me of going to Benghazi airport from the desert when we were living in Libya in the late 70s with my husband's job, John Martyn kept me company on many days😊
I just wanna give this beautiful person a BIG HUG for all the joy he has brought me and everyone else in the world!!! God bless both John and Beverly Martyn from the bottom of my heart!!!🐞🍀🍄♥
Martin Scully - Buddy you have the same tastes as me - and also one song seems to lead to the next!!!!! Must be the whiskey. John Martyn was one of a kind. All the best. His early albums still blow me away.
I can't get this out of my head that there is people walking around with a little bit of John inside of every one of us who can't explain or express our selves the way John does here with all the pain but also a special type of pleasure from the pain only art like John's can make you feel understood Danny a master of what he does in his own right such a lucky man to have been so close to what I see as a master crafts man ,men ....Bless The Weather in so many ways the ephitomy of acoustics I oze creativity under the school what John Danny and Nick Drake gave us majestically .
I had seen him play in Brisbane Australia.. he blew me away swigging on a King brown.. large bottle of beer 🍺.. never forgotten what passion like to jam with him in the next life!! 🍻
What does it matter where he was from? Is it just because everyone want's to claim the beloved John Martyn as 'one of their own'? One things for sure...the late, great, John Martyn is now in the place where we'll all heading.....RIP J.M.
Just a mention here of the totally amazing John Martyn Project. Not a tribute band but all superb musicians from the next generation who together breathe new life into this music. Their (unamplified) acoustic version of Over The Hill performed live was a real spine tingling moment. Go see them if you can.
Wasn't aware of this guy. Reminds me of a peppy Tim Buckley. I hope he's the kind that gets better with time . Like a lot already.Peace, Farm out and Gravy.

@DrSnook my friend, very good guitarist, i´m in a band with, is from that town, and gave me cd´s of his life idols ... john martyn and nick drake ... those cd´s are layin´on my desk right now ... and it´s beyond the words. ... i´m a jazz drummer but this is totally much more better than any american music like dave matthews and all american bluegrass and country ... it has something what american musicans with their supertechnique are missing ...
Just check what i wrote right away after asking if anyone had any news from him, for i hadn't read he was dead, but thank you for the news. Love the Album Solid Air

That was bollox written for the sleeve notes;- the song really describes a walk from a flat in the elphinstone area of hastings back to his place in the old town. (I should know, as I used to spend time with John at said flat..)
That's what I thought, too. He may have said as much, too, when he first played it live in a folk club over a pub in the Old Town to a bunch of mesmerised hippies...
@MrJonDole It doesn't matter, John was is and always will be a legend, too big for any one country, too big for the world. God bless him (I preferred him talking in his 'more' native Scots than in his Danny Thompson-esque estuary though)
Father was Scottish, mother was Belgian, influenced by Scottish music loved the Irish and died in Ireland...he was a shade confused but he got it right towards the end.

I'm with you. A Golden Age.

But Nick Drake was ignored
Nice to hear.
Dammed good taste bought me here.

Underrated, under appreciated, purely brilliant 🤩 sadly missed. His songs resonate ranging from solemn to joy and everything between 💙

it really was a great time, had some pints during and after, couple of nice smokes, during and after, a neat memory

Still reeling from your demise big man, so glad you made music. Everything in your favour.

Although i don't know every album from John Martyn, this is to me the best of all, sweet seventeen oh yes

I’m going away to leave you
Going to leave you in disgrace
Nothing in my favour
Got the wind in my face
I’m going home
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill.
Can’t get enough of sweet cocaine
Get enough of Mary Jane
Going back to where I came from
Going rolling back home again
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill.
I’ve been worried about my babies
Been worried about my wife
just one place for a man to be
When he’s worried about his life
I’m going home
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill.
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Well I’m going away to leave you
Going to leave you in disgrace
got nothing in my favour
rain in my face
I’m going home
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill.
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill.
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill
Over the hill
Hey, hey, hey, over the hill.
Thx for writing the lyrics, Tommy.

and i've just arrived from there .. .. they have john martyn cd in hmv in town centre ...
The dude is playing lead and rhythm on an acoustic guitar! I actually(no shit) had to count how many fingers he had. AMAZING!!
Timeless eloquence

Im here because of Chris and Rich Robinson.
Yea, me too
@TheChairsniffer Hastings, theres a little plaque on the house :)
Actually not to be picky but John Martyn Is English born in Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden, Surrey, England later moved to Glasgow
What makes this performance even more impressive is that I believe he only picked up the guitar about 6 years or so earlier.
that´s the best .... really from the heart ... no nation has such a depth in music like english acoustic guitarists do
Father was Scottish, mother was Belgian, influenced by Scottish music loved the Irish and died in Ireland...he was a shade confused but he got it right towards the end.
Had a fight with John Martyn in '92. Didn't stop me loving his music and talent. Heavily influenced my songwriting. Have a listen.
Ha! Elaboration please.........
yaaah, i've been there and just arrived back to czech rep.
i once met a man who did some sound system for him (jimcrow) sounded this good !!
local patriot? music goes beyond boders
A lot of albums from 1973 already sound old. But this one?? Not even a bit.
4-20 brought me here .
They probably just watched the video upside down and clicked the wrong button:-P Can't be any other explanation, 'cause this song is just awesome.
When he sang "sweet cocaine" I went and bought the album. Wish Jimmy Page had played on the track tho!
quality :-)
@g720pzspinrek1 Good shout, knew he was from the south but wasn't sure exactly where.

It's on the Brothers of a Feather DVD/Cd.
They namecheck John as , " Scottish Rock"n'Roller type guy "
But it doesn't improve the song. Just a milder copy of a great original
some good mandy on this one
Definitely.

Dan Thilman me too man
I'm late as hell but same for me
I'm drinking old #7. Fuck all.
@g720pzspinrek1 Spent a moment in Hastings as well...a few good moments as I recall....hey ho
doesnt matter if he's english or scottish, all you need to know is he chose Ireland as his home...so hes Irish. Probably.
He got it right towards the end.
Can see where We Sheeran got the inspiration for Drunk from!
Anyone knowing my friends Carol OMalley and Jimmy Nuttles from Liverpool let me know please, and thank you, for thanks to Jimbo i got to know John Martyn
@g720pzspinrek1 He was British, he identified as both Scots and English and could often be heard speaking in a Scots and an English accent.
ProcolHarum1967 and ended his days in Kilkenny Ireland.
True for ya, he got it right at the end.
Why is there a picture of "London Conversation"? This song was on "Over the Hill".......
