    Wow what a fine version of Noel Cowards Dance Dance little Lady, such a fine arrangement with strings and brass, you really have to listen to this to appreciate it, wonderful.

    This may be my very favorite record. According to The American Dance Band Discography by Brian Rust, it was one of four sides recorded in New York on August 5, 1932, with the Kahn-a-Sirs doing the vocal chorus and Artie Shaw on the clarinet. I wish I could have been there. Such an inspired arrangement and performance. After one more recording session that fall, Kahn became preoccupied with aviation, disbanded the orchestra and went on to reach new heights as a test pilot. What a guy!

    A great banker’s son maybe, but one fine bandleader. RWK represents the best in pop music of the day. One of my favorite 78s I got at the Raleigh Flea Market at the State Fairgrounds when I was a sophomore at NCSU...his recording of “Mountain Greenery” on one side and “The One Girl” on the flip. I’ve continued to enjoy RWK’s great recorded legacy through such wonderful posts as Prozoot, the very best TH-cam offers for such music...

    A Renaissance dude. Helped being a banking heir. He did have another band in '36, at least to make a film short for Vitaphone. And according to music company ads, he sometimes doubled saxophone. Which brand? Conn, of course. :)
    The Kahn-a-sirs' name kidded papa Otto, a noted connaisseur of art. They were really the very popular Foursome, cut to 3. (The Threesome would have been a racy name even today.) The clue is Kahn's 1932 film short, where they do expert ocarina harmony, a 4some hallmark.

    Sounded good to me. Your quality is always the best of all, and there are some very good people on TH-cam. I dread to think what you must have spent on your records though - they're always rare and mint. And I am jealous! The chances of seeing a Khan Columbia over here are as likely as falling over an Edison lateral at the church jumble sale.

    I love the dance orchestras of this era, and all your posts in this series make me feel like I found the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine in music.

      Hard to believe Fats Waller wrote it. Lyric by Joe Young.

    Recorded on August 5, 1932, and November 28, 1928. Vocal by the "Kahn-a-Sirs" {"Sheltered by the Stars"} and Franklyn Baur {"Dance Little Lady"}.

    nice....very nice. the great depression bottoming out. wonder how this romance played with the homeless and down-and-out? hopefully it brought a few minutes of uplift from the heaviness of terrible loss and hunger. thanks.

    The second track was a very nice version of the classic Noel Coward song "Dance, Little Lady". The Master would have approved.

    @muscleco, Yes, it's a very fuzzy, poorly recorded Victor from 1928 (vocal by Franklyn Baur) -- but the chart is a masterpiece!

    Dig the Suzaphone(?) they used for bass before they could record a bass fiddle. Some used a bass sax. Which ever, the music was upbeat, hopeful and danceable. Today much of it is dark and dreary or simplistically boring after I've heard them twice.

    The only chance they even heard it was tuning in one of Roger's broadcasts, or a disc jockey show where the Columbia might have been played.
    Even the well to do had stopped buying records by 1932. The one market left was country, whose fans didn't own too many radios.

    Not the kind of tune you'd usually associate with Fats Waller but just another example of his versatility.

  • @RatPfink66
    @RatPfink66 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not much likelier over here. You probably had to be buying in the '70s and '80s to really junk this vintage of stuff - it was already pretty pricey when I began ca. 1990.
    I always suspected it was not just an era, but something of a demographic. I missed out on both. I only got the "knowledge" by spending some time in New York.
