Thank you for sharing Tiptoe with us. Your channel has allowed us to see a Tortoise up close & personal! I had a question. I was wondering something. You got Tiptoe when you were 7, so it's kind of like you grew up together. He was tiny and you were a small child. I have saved many box turtles from in the middle of roads. A Tortoise is different. Where did your parents ever find him or buy this beautiful Tortoise? Thank you for educating us on the care of Tiptoe. He is a beautiful and I'm curious where you could get a Tortoise like him. I have been keeping turtles for 30years, and it's one of my biggest interests.
I can tell you are taking good care of Tip-toe even though it's challenging to keep a large tortoise like that.
I would like to have a sulcata of my own, but it's way to cold where I live to give them a proper housing.

I shared this video with my mom because at her house, she has a sulcata named Felix that is the same age and size as tiptoe. I see the 3 heat lamps on top in tiptoe's house and she says you might need a heat pad for tiptoe so he can stay warm on his underside while he's asleep. Right now he's staying warm on top but not underneath. It's getting closer to the winter months again and he might need it if you don't want him to get another respiratory infection.
I saw a different video where they had something to heat underneath. She said they set it on low.
How cold does it get in LA, and how long does it stay cold?
@Sandi Steinberg these days, it gets cold every single night since the end of October 2022. And we have a huge cold snap approaching.
@@willieg7895 Thanks for your response, but I have never been to California, let alone LA, so I don't know what constitutes cold there.
In late December we had a record-breaking cold snap here in the DC area and woke up to 7 degrees. Usually in January, the morning temp is in the 20s or low 30s. (We are having a super mild February--more like late March. Not a drop of snow this year. Average is about 13 inches.)

Thank you for this info! My sulcata is maybe 4 years old. I'm guessing because we found him in our front yard. There is a huge problem with over breeding these guys. Thank you for being a real one. and I appreciate the Q&As. It helps me prepare for the future with my sulcata. I know that he's gonna be a lot of work when he is as big as T. But I love T and I love how well you and your parents take care of him. Your parents are so great to house him.

We “tortoise sat” about a 60 loins Sulcata years ago and he absolutely loved to eat roses petals that were past their prime and also loved dandelion leaves I would buy big bunches at the grocery store! He was darn cool!! Thank you for your video!

If you want to meet a sweet snapping turtle who also doesn't bite and thinks he's a dog. He's on Jeffrey Perrico channel and his name is Gizmo. Like tiptoe, he also tries crawling in his owner's lap. He just turned 4 this month, so he's still very young. And I think they're Spanish or something similar, and it's so cute the way Jeffrey calls him Geezmo. I've also seen another common snapping turtle in the United States who is about 25lbs named Tank, but I don't know much other than he also acts like a dog. Coming when called. Affectionate, etc. It's so amazing to see from a reptile so thought of as agro, when they both are very chill.

How I wish we had a better 'round the year' climate in Britain, to properly keep a tortoise, although we did have a small tortoise many years ago, who surprised us when she laid 5 or 6 eggs in the garden !
I made a heated vivarium for the baby tortoises we expected .
Sadly, whilst the eggs gyrated, to show themselves at the top of the soil and sand, in the container I kept indoors, they couldn't break out of the shells .
Very sad !
I found out later I should have put more water in the nest/ container , hence it was too tough for them to hatch.
I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos, which are always so pleasant and up-lifting .

For some reason I always thought Tortoise's ate fish and smaller reptiles. Maybe I was thinking of a different kind of Tortoise but I was surprised to see that Tiptoe's diet consists entirely of fruit and veggies! You clearly keep him well fed and I could watch him munch and crunch on stuff all day. My heart has been snatched by this gentle giant!

I suffer from some of the excruciating pain 85% throughout my body. Nothing seems to work for me. I just happened to find your video of tiptop and I watch them. because I noticed that for one brief moment, I would smile. A smile I haven’t seen in almost a year. it proves to me that animals have the ability to make a person feel better. Thanks tiptop.

There is nothing for this tortoise to do, in the wild it would dig around and burrow into soft earth, it would forage for its own food - here it lives in a small concrete enclosure.
Sulcata tortoises need lots of room and the ability to mirco manage their own environment, keeping a giant tortoise in an urban environment like this is cruel.
@@modelsteamers671 I agree, yet this tortoise has never know anything else. It would be nice for him to have a patch of dirt he can dig in.

It's great that you love him so much. I realize in that environment its hard for him to get all the curiosity he may have, satisfied. I watch the tube with Ike? And notice having a burrow means a lot to them. But I know with y'all's situation thats not practical. Though I'd love to see him have an acre or 2 , to have for his own, I'm sure that's maybe no option right now. You might think about a larger property in the near future. Emotionally he needs space to wander. And walks through the the neighborhood, though helpful, I'm sure you have thought this a thousand times, so I'm sorry to throw it out now and then. You are a loving mom to him, and that's a big part of the care of him. Take care C&T.

@@denisejones1863 Tortoise need wander room. I think. Like birds or any animal with roaming tendencies. Being couped up, just can't be healthy for them. It's like keep whales or dolphin in giant swimming pools. They're used to hundreds of miles of open water. Not swimming in a circle, every day.
Great learning from you. I own one that is 3 years old and I got him earlier this year. Amazing to see how big Tom will get. I’m also in So Cal so glad to see he will be okay outside. How do you monitor the temp in his house and what is a good temp for the house? Does Tiptoe come out when it is cold outside or when it rains?

I'm not sure about tiptoe specifically, but generally sulcatas rely more on scent than eyesight.

My husband had adopted two desert tortoise in late 70's. One male, one female. The male was always humping the poor female, had worn spots on her shell. This was not a good idea to have them contained in backyard together. The would dig a burrow to go into, we didn't have a pool for them. Yet we did get babies a couple of times, which we turned over to adoption.

Yea, he needs soft earth to walk on and scrape around in. Keeping a giant tortoise in a concrete enclosure is cruel.

Hi Caitlin, A tortoise about 3 times the size of yours got out in Scottsdale and was walking down the path next to a busy road. It was about 6:30 am and 3 cars stopped to help keep him away from the road. We called Police to assist. That thing was like 500 lbs and we had no food to steer him. I wonder if you could put a tracker on him in case he does get out?
