How to make wooden ocarina, with hand tools

- My take on making ocarina. Nice little project, that can be done with just a couple of hand tools.
The wood I am using is seasoned piece of cherry.
TUNING: first you get your first tone, without any holes made yet. You than find the position for fingerholes you find comfortable. You start by drilling tiny hole, which you than widen with knife and chisel. Continue to make the fingerhole bigger until you get the tone you want (bigger hole = higher pitch). Than you repeat for the second hole, third one...
I think once you get the air pressure right, it is very easy to play instrument ( I never played one before). This one has very nice, deep voice, resembling the voice of american native flute
Music - Faring (from Gothic , by Kai Rosenkranz)
The outro music is my own recording of this actual ocarina
Finally a vid that’s not just a loz toy review or something
An authentic work of art
this reminds me of Legend of Zelda. I'm missed it so much
This is one of the coolest goddamn woodworking projects I've seen! I do some traditional woodworking and I think I found something unique to try, even though mine might turn out rather shitty haha! Thanks for the video!
Hi, glad you like it. To be honest, my first few ocarinas were quite shitty as well haha, just give it a try, your second/third ocarina will be much better and it won´t take you nearly as much time as making the first one. Good luck!
How did the project go?
I love the craftsman ship put into each and every project you make even to this day
Thanks Mr. Flapy Ninja, I try to do my best!
Highly impressed. That's a lot of love and dedication right there.
The tone is insane! You did a great job! Love the ending
Thank you Kiko, glad you like it!
I’m sooooo gonna make this with my dad
Great build, i love the simplicity of it and how you made it using hand tools. Incredible technique and result!
Waouh ! What a wonderful work ! Magnificient, artistic and precious one. Many many thanks ! We have to maintain our traditions of working and doing !
I'm definitely making one of these tommorrow!
I love your energy and you create this beautiful instrument. Thank you
Thank you too!
Thanks for this awesome video. I love your work.
Thanks Elishea, glad you like it
Guys hope you like the video! I am starting my own facebook page dedicated to traditional musical instruments. Checking out the page would be higly apprecieted, also in case you have any questions about my instruments or you want to buy one, contact me there!

Muy artesanal y excelente video. Tienes talento.
amazing craftsmanship!
This thing sounds by lengths better than any of the stuff that was produced by clay artists fiddling around with it here on TH-cam. And just with hand tools. Very impressive. I might give that a ago, even though I don't have the chisel for hollowing out stuff :)

Thanks, wood as a material simply has more character than any clay/plastic
very cool I need one......ahh
Very nice! And pretty amazing deep sounding. Loved it
Good day, Excellent efforts, you sure know how to work around with wood. The Finished Ocarina is simply Awesome. Thanks again for uploading the video. Will surely to try to build a Wooden Ocarina using your video as a reference.

Finally a Manly Ocarina tutorial. Skyrim will be proud.
@@Nicky_Biggz chill bruh

Sounds awesome, looks awesome.
I have a few questions:
Can you list down the tools you use for this project so that I can make one as well?
How do you make the notes and can you change to a different tone as well?
And finally, how do you attach the two halves together?
Please reply the answers when you read this. Thank you.
im not sure but it was most likely attached together with glue
I've GOT to try this out!
Thanks for sharing
Glad to help mate
I love ur work sir

Thank you Mr. Bowman
This is awesome bro great job!

this was wonderful

good job. sounds awesome
Очень круто!!! So cool, amazing!!!
Good job.
sounds Magnificent, but i have none of those tool's.
is there a place i can look for 1 that sounds like that ?...
or maybe an Amazon link someone could provide ?.
Thanks and hi!, If you don´t feel like making one youself you can get smaller ones on both ebay/amazon. But in case you want one with deep tone like this one has you shall have to contact some private maker.
Or you can contact me here fletnarstviujilmu(AT)seznam.cz
I make irish flutes (you can visit my website here www.fletnarstviujilmu.unas.cz/f_irske.php , but it has czech version only). Occasionally I make other instruments as well. So if you are interested feel free to write me an e-mail and I can make you one similiar to the ocarina I play in the video. Cheers
all of the ocarinas i have found that sound like that cost a lot, so you are better off just making your own
JJ Ch Do you send to other country?
EU is no problem, if you are not from EU I would have to check shipping rules, so it depends where are you from.
@@JJChWorkshop How about to the US to make and ship one?
So cool, just about to finish the voicing on an apple wood burl. Hope it turns out okay fingers crossed
Im gonna do this😊
Best and shortest
Hand tools plus a work bench, clamp, specialised tools..Good project though, very artistic as well.
Huge thumbs up
Voll schön danke😘
Loveeee it
nice
Woah - it was carved by 3:30 and it took my 3d printer 4 hours to make one xP
I buy a plastic one and I will never again relay on plastic for an instrument it's impossible for my to make that thing sound properly with certain notes
Super work with simple tools, and I love the tone you achieved! My wooden ocarinas only play for a few minutes before the "labium" (wedge that splits the air) gets saturated and loses its sharpness. Does Cherry wood somehow prevent this? I'm going to try inlaying a veneer of antler in the latest one when I get the enthusiasm back.
Thanks, using hardwood like cherry definetly helps, you can also saturete the Wood with oil ( i use lineseed oil). You can even submerge the whole ocarina in oil overnight, And than let the instrument dry over few days. This Will make the labium very durable.
magno,nice great
Like the video!!
que buen sonido lograste
Dedication :)
É um timbre bem único.
""How to make..." You lost me at 0:09seconds. Chop with an axe...
You can look at the cuts at 0:14 or so and see how those chops were hitting the wood.
I don't really know what you expected, to be honest, this is a very complicated instrument to make. Anything this complicated can't be done with just a pocket knife and sandpaper unless you wanna spend like a week on carving. And the ax was mainly just for processing the raw wood into boards, you could probably do something similar with planks, just the wood wouldn't be as nice.
@John Dough id be surprised if you could do anything with that. All I'm saying is be realistic. This video isnt doing anything wrong, its not clickbait or anything - he's using hand tools, just not everyone necessarily has the same tools. You dont have to follow the guide exactly if you can't and I suggest that if you have to follow a guide step by step to get smth done it's less creative. Think outside the box
Lol, Gothic 3, nice!
Can you make a 12 hole ocarina out of wood too? And the measurements?
Omg, this is not a normal diy lol
but the one in the legend of zelda is made of stone or marble

My great grandfather used to make beautiful wooden sculptures with just a knife and sandpaper. He was native American. I don't know if he ever did anything like this.
I wish I had as much craftmanship as your grandfather
@@fixedevening4623 yeah me too. He used to carve his own walking sticks and canes. He would put animals in them, mostly wolves, and sell some of them. He also used to make small wooden puzzles. The ones with the small metal ring that you had to get off and put back on, or a bunch of pieces that, if put together correctly, would make a small pyramid.
@@feliciabowman4739 That..... is actually pretty cool
@@fixedevening4623 yeah. I really miss him. He was awesome.
We all miss our family or friends from time to time, it may be because they live somewhere else or maybe it is because they passed on. They are with us in memory and in our hearts.
What did you use to glue it together? I’m always looking for a traditional way to glue wood, and idk what to use for flutes. Love your tutorial btw!
edit:
Also, do you apply oil inside the flute?
👍Отлично.Но лучше склеится если из двух расколотых половинок сделать.
Could you please point me in the direction of where to purchase a set of hand tools needed to try this? I have little to no experience, and I figure there is some sort of hand tool kit I can buy to get started. I am very handy with my hands and prefer no power tools. Just looking for somewhere to get a set of woodworking tools to begin with.
am trying to carve one myself and am not getting any sound out of mine how could i get it to make sound?
i did cut in the wind hole/ sound hole
It could be the placement of the sound hole, it should come just before the end of the inner wall, so that when don't you can just see a small part of the inner wall below the sound hole
Im trying to make one and had just cut out the wind tunnel. When I blow into the wind tunnel I get no sound please help, Im having a panic attack
No need for panic attack mate :)
Try to watch my How to make wooden tin whistle/low whistle instruction video, I explain how to shape the wind tunnel there in detail (the wind tunnel is pretty much the same for ocarina and low whistle).
could I use Maple instead of cherry, no lumber store here has it in stock and i wasn't hoping to wait 2 weeks for them to deliver a board?
You can
Hi, you can use maple for sure, any hard wood will do.
What are the dimensions of the ocarina and can I make it out of any type of wood
Wow the sound so full of texture and warm... do you sell these? Or just make them for fun?
Hi, thanks, I make musical instruments mostly for fun, but occasionally I also sell some of them, you can check my page

@@JJChWorkshop thank you!
Can i make a 12 holes ocarina using this process? Amazing video!
Sure you can, just remember that Iam using pentatonic scale (less tones = bigger holes). Drill your holes very small and be careful when you make them larger to avoid making them too big. Ocarina would be than very difficult to tune. Thanks!
this is great but can you make it higher pitched?
Well, sure all you have to do is make the ocarina smaller

Hi.I enjoyed watching your video of carving ocarina? I have just joined woodcarving classes I am interested to carve ocarina. Is it possible to get a templets for ocarina?
If you were to paint it would it affect the sound or anything
If you keep the edge on the blowing hole sharp, you are good to go even with paint.
@@JJChWorkshop thank you
was wondering how long did it take , amazing
Great demonstration :), may I ask what tool you used to make the round holes? Thanks!
Thanks, I used small round chisels to start the holes and I expand them as needed with thin blade knife.
Thanks for responding so quickly, that's very useful @@JJChWorkshop
Any way I can get an image of the outline you used to make yours? School project coming up and I'd really like to impress some people!
Hi mate, I´d love to help, but right now i have no acces to the plans I used, if you can wait till friday, provide your mail and I send you what I have, cheers
+JJ Ch great that's totally fine, lll send you an email under the subject "plans" and you can reply whenever you can
Hey Could I have the template too please? :)
does anyone have any suggestions on where to put my soundhole? i tried at the very top of the chamber, just below the windway and it doesnt make any noise
Hi, i Try to make a ocarina but i don't understand how the windway is make, i try different method but no one works. You maybe can help me
Great work. Quick question I did mine exactly how you did yours even getting the same tone from the first blow. But once I glued it together and drilled the finger holes it lost all sound, where did I go wrong?
Hi there, thanks, thats really strange, never happened to me before. Maybe check if there is no debris inside the ocarina, especially, that there is enoug hspace in the windway.
If you can make it work, I would appreciete if you could share what was wrong, so others can see as well.
You started with two blocks with the same image on them an then had two mirrorred cut pieces... how'd you do that?
If I remeber correctly, I just hollowed one from the top and the other one from the bottom :)
You write 'than' when you actually mean 'then'. Not sure if English is your first language or not, but just letting you know.
Thanks for the information! =D
What should I do if no sound is produced?
Sorry to bother you but what are the tools you used in this video and where can I find them? Very new to woodworking but I'd like to start making more ocarinas of different kinds.
Hi man, I'm a college student and I need to make an instrument. Could you give me some advice on other woods to make an ocarina? Good job man!
What playing in video?
Neat
How did you come up with what size the inner chamber needs to be? Just guessing work of do you maybe have some measurements for that ? Also: would softer wood like cedar work here ? I hate the smell of cherry :)
Hi, about the chamber size, I just made the ocarina of the shape and size I wanted than i tried blowing the first tone (just holding the halves together, not using glue yet). I got my first tone and than i started slowly expanding the chamber more, checking the tone as i progressed. When you expand the chamber, the tone gets deeper and once you reach the tone you like you just glue the halves together and you are ready to drill finger holes.
Unfortunetly i don´t use cedar, it doesn´t grow in my country. So I dont´t know much about it. But incase you don´t like cherry i can recommend you applewood, maple, beech or hornbeam. Good luck
Cover music is the Cape Town from Gothic 3. :D
Top
Thanks!
Can you make wooden cannon ?
I´ll add it to my list :D
Can I ask, why did you use cherry tree? Is there any differences between this kind of wood and others? What is your recommendation?
Thanks
Cherry is hard and dense, good for builds you want to last a while
is there anything i can use instead of an axe?
What tools did you use? I'm interested in making an ocarina from wood, but I don't know what any the tools you used are.
Hi, well i tried keeping it simple so not much really. I used just a hatchet, spoon knife, rip saw, knife, few round chisels and files for making the holes. Than some sandpaper to finish the surface. Thats about it
What did you exactly use to join the 2 parts of the ocarina?
Hi, it was a while ago, I am not sure to be honest. But once both parts are shaped, you can use any water based adhesive.
Preferably something with weaker bond, in case you need to open the ocarina for some adjustments.
Could I use any type of wood or does it have to be a specific type?
This is a bit late, but prehaps someone eles may find this useful. The type of wood shouldent change the sound pre say, but a hardwood may be easer to work with in this way.
Late as well, but you are right! Hardwoods are going to produce better sound. Different hardwoods are going to make slightly different sounding instruments, but that really comes to personal preference.
