After this album came out, Saturday Night Live had Garrett Morris (who was the one black cast member) do a guest editorial on the Weekend Update segment. He comes on saying he heard that the song says certain things about black girls, and he is very concerned, and “I just have this to say to you, Mr. Jagger…. where can I find these girls?” 😂😂😂
This album was my “summer of 78” soundtrack!
For me, it was the last classic Stones record.

This album stayed on my turntable for six months. When I saw them on July 13, 1978, they played every song from the album - except Some Girls. Summer of 78 ruled.

Waiting On A Friend dates back years before Some Girls. It was an outtake from 1973
@@flyingburritobro68 Yes I meant he released it as a response. Of course could be several interpretations but in a throw away line Mick said something like maybe it was an apology for some girls. But he also said it was about a friend could be a man or woman. He liked fucking around.
The cover of the original vinyl album had die cast cutouts of the women’s faces, and the dust jacket inside had the faces of The Rolling Stones members along with some female celebrities such as Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, and Raquel Welch. The images of the celebrities were used without permission so they had to change the art to remove the womens’ faces for subsequent pressings. So what you’re seeing on the cover here is the revised cover with the women’s faces removed, and all that’s left is The Rolling Stones.
I still have mine with Lucy and Red Buttons on it.

This album is quintessential Stones. Everyone raves about the Mick Taylor era, but this right here IS the Stones.
Yeah, that's a bunch of men on the cover, the band members. One thing people don't talk about much is the Stones' sense of humor. Other songs like Far Away Eyes, Factory Girl, and Jigsaw Puzzle are songs that showcase their humor. By the late 70s, the band had branched out into new territories, genres and instrumentally as well. It really comes out in the backbeat Watts and Whyman lay down, with lots of funk, soul, jazz, and even rock and punk. Listen to Watt's drum playing on Miss You, very tasty and jazzy. GREAT stuff. You would do yourselves a service if you went from Black and Blue (one of my favorite Stones albums) to Tattoo You. ALL great stuff. Keep going down that hole; it's a deep one.
I think there was a lawsuit or a threat of one about the album cover.

I'm not really a big fan of the Stones, but this album is one of my all time favorites. "Respectable", "Miss You", and "Shattered" are all great tracks.
Agreed. I hope they will find a good live version of Miss You with Bobby Keys (sax). The horns section is killer. The entire pace of the song is fire! Man, they know how to work a big stage!

This tour was my first concert I ever attended. Anaheim Stadium, festival seating, 70,000 + people, the Stones were 5 hours late, the good old days! I believe the ticket was $9.50.
This stuff NEVER gets old.
This album has a funky,disco,r&b,blues...got it all!
The Stones sense of humor comes thru on this one, as it does on Far Away Eyes, Miss You and Shattered. Such a great album. Love when you guys review the Stones, La and Che---you get the intensity of the music. Thanks!

@@mr.brenman2132 I'd say The Who were the most raucous stage band, they invented the nasty stage performance. Their signature moves and destructive performances have been copied by many bands many times over.

By the time this album came out in 1978, the Stones’ popularity had faded a bit with some people (not me!) for a variety of reasons and other genres of music like punk and disco had pretty much taken over.
But, this record (first to feature guitarist Ronnie Wood) reminded people what the band was all about and is worth checking out in it’s entirety.
That’s blues musician Sugar Blue on harmonica, by the way.
This record is great for road trips, just put it on and let it play.

@@tonytony5380Ronnie had been a guest guitarist on both Black and Blue and It's Only Rock and Roll, but this was his first album as a member of the band. He'd only appeared on maybe 3-4 tracks on the prior two albums.
@@tonytony5380Actually, it was the third Stones album that Wood played on (“It’s Only Rock and Roll” was the other), but he wasn’t a full member of the band during any of those recording sessions.
That’s why I said “featured”, guess I should’ve been more specific.

This album and a Gold Trans-Am are eternally linked in my mind.
My buddy had a gold trans am and he temporarily took the decals off. It was the coolest looking car I've ever seen. I tried to convince him to leave it that way but he wouldn't do it.😆
One of their best records. As far as pure funk goes, I would recommend their Black& Blue record, start off with "Hey Negrita". Another banger from the BEST channel.
Some Girls definitely stands out, along with a few other albums, as part of Summer 1978.
As a 13 yr old, "some Puerto Rican girls is just dyin'' to meet you..." this line got me.
With the addition of Ronnie Wood in the mid 70's the Stones got a booster shot of attitude! Check out the rest of this album, as every song is a boozy, up all night good time!

@@frankmirra8243 My only reference (other than reading the liner notes 45 years ago ha ha) is seeing Mick do it all several times live. It makes sense that somebody more proficient would do the album track. Sugar Blue must be such a person I will look into him. Thank you.

A huge album from them. Every song is great. Ronnie and Keith played some sweet licks.
The parent advisory stickers came on about ten years after this album was released. For more of Jagger's riffing, check out "Miss You" and "Shattered" from this same album.
Shattered is a particular favorite of mine. It really moves along. A great ode to NYC..

This isn't even quite my era but if you worked in a dive bar in the 90s you heard this song. This is a great album period. Essential stuff.
The Stones understood that sometimes, or most of the time, rock music should be fun and dirty and obnoxious, with no socially redeeming value. I love that approach.

I love yells show for so many reasons. You guys are just cool dudes and I feel kinship to people who have love and understanding of music. I love that comparison with the rap song. The faces on the Some Girls cover are actually the Stones and the blank faces were celebrity women that were on the original released cover that were removed because of legal issues.... The original cover is a collectable and worth $$$$$
You need to check out the Stones version of "Wild Horses". It is one of the sweetest songs they ever did. I can bring tears to your eyes!

June '78 .. Stones have a way of dropping great albums while other current music is lame. This tore the roof off.

I saw them touring this LP at Soldier Field in Chicago 1978. I remember thinking at the time > these guys have been around a long time..they probably can’t keep it going much longer
Probably not their best LP overall (Exile) but happens to be my favorite. Was just coming of age around that time (14-15 yrs or so) so it hit harder than some of the earlier stuff for me. Also, came out during the disco era and was refreshing to get a good solid high-quality rock n roll LP. I think they'd love 'Shattered' from this one which is a personal fav & almost has an early hip hop vibe🔥

Lmfao, I've been waiting for your reaction to this nasty gem. I loved seeing your eyes get bigger as Mick spits out those lines. I remember hearing this on the radio when it first came out my senior year of HS 78. When it came to the you know what line, I couldn't believe my ears that the whole line slipped through uncensored!! ......I just don't have that much jam." Wow. It took em a few weeks to get that line censored a bit, but man, this was raw nasty Stones at their bluesiest and dirtiest.
One of my big regrets ever was hearing a midnight FM radio announcement that the Stones were going to play in my town (ol St Loo) at a small 3000 seat theater in a few months when the rest of the Some Girls tour was going to be in bigger hockey arenas. Tickets on sale the next morning. It was close to graduation time etc, but instead of getting down to the Theater window to score a few tickets that next AM, I chickened out and went to school. Apparently people started forming an all night line right after the midnight radio announcement, and it was sold out the next morning within an hour or 2. So I missed one of the smallest and most intimate Stones shows in the 70s on an album that is hit after hit. Dammmmnnn.

From the last great Stones album. From the 1980s onward, they've been pretty much just cashing it in. This whole album is a stone cold classic and it's as good as anything from the late 60s.
Yup,I have been saying it for years,Tattoo You was alright,saw the tour in Buffalo via Toronto.But,Far Away Eyes is my favorite.
Tattoo You was a great album and sold well. Emotional Rescue is also underrated. Undercover was a good fit for the period as well.
I mean is it really realistic that a band can put out great albums for 20 to 30 years without some decline? No one else comes close to the string of great albums as the Stones but people expected them to excel without any decline in the face of a continually changing musical landscape. They still have done it longer and better than anyone.

Something about the Rolling Stones is just incredibly listenable. Whether it's just in the background or you're focusing in on every element of the song, they're just a great band.
I remember when Mick Jagger was asked about the lyrics (especially about Black girls), his answer was; If they can't take a joke it's too f---ing bad.
Mick was spot-on about all the women because he's been through them all...

What an album. Many of the songs were standards on the radio back in the day for I believe there were only two songs which didn't make the airwaves on a regular basis.The music was more poppish than their earlier works and they hit their stride when it came to the "turn up the radio" vibe.
Jagger going straight-up Gangster/Pimp on Some Girls. Deep in the Street! He wants it all.
The tour following this album was the first time I saw The Stones Live in 1978 at JFK Stadium in Philly. I have seen them 4 times more since then, the last in October of 2021 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville TN. Always AWESOME!!!!!
On one of those Philadelphia, shows the crowd trash the stage and booed them because they cut the show short and they were sucking just going to the motions .By the way that would’ve been veterans Stadium in Philly . anyway, did that happen at the show you went to?
