  • For almost an entire month before this climb, I have been quietly enduring pain on my left foot. I limp my way to work and ice my ankle before going to sleep. It’s tolerable on most days, but at its worst, my foot was swollen, I had to skip work once, and was unable to attend a few important events. I figured I would just deal with the issue after I return from my trip to Japan. Then AMCI’s Training Climb 2 in Mariveles got cancelled due to the recent typhoon, and it was rescheduled to a date that didn’t conflict with a prior commitment. Nevertheless I was unsure that I could join until I’m either healed or get properly diagnosed. Walking home from my office is easy, but climbing a mountain with a 14-kilogram backpack is an altogether different matter and I was uncertain - to say the least - that my foot could take on that much suffering. I didn’t want to inflict my weakness on everyone else. But I felt I had to be there: to help in any way I could, and contribute in whatever way I can. And with the help of gentle massages, a fervent prayer, and two shots of pure adrenaline, I signed up for what turned out to be a storied climb filled with life-changing moments. I’m grateful to have been part of a group that valued teamwork, whose members laughed amid misery and many difficulties, who shared skills, knowledge and food at every opportunity, and who always looked out for each other at every turn. I’m mighty proud of everyone who finished what is probably the hardest TC2 in the last 11 years, and I hope that everyone learns to be more kind and more giving. And to always be fair and selfless. Also, this is how you support beginner-hikers who are pushed to their limits on these mountains: with patience, encouragement, and understanding. Congratulations everyone.
