One of the reasons that ASML machines are so complicated is that they are designed to fit into a cargo plane which means certain components have to downsized. This requirement or restriction is not required for domestic producer of these lithographic machines.

China has spent decades catching up in STEM fields and now lead in 57 out of 64 critical tech areas of the future (according to ASPI). They also dominate the supply chains. If the US wants to improve, it needs to get back to basics. This implies better education, esp. STEM fields, vocational training, re-prioritizing it's societal values; namely more hard work and less entertainment (screen time). This will take generations of investment. Something the US may find very hard to do given it's current mentality.

I agreed with Prof Powell that 'rather than taking victory lapse, many Chinese see this as a validation of their effort and a need to continue to improve'. Revenge and vengeance serve no purpose. Arrogance in your success only leads to your own downfall. China and the US still need to cooperate in many areas not only for their own good but for good of the whole world.
I doubt that the Chinese would ease up now that they've seen the fundamentally hostile attitude of Americans to China's economic rise.
The business environment is so competitive in China. Companies there have no choice but to keep improving and innovate just to survive. In the west, big companies will just buy the smaller more innovative companies and then rest on their laurels for as long as possible.

I'm a US citizen and I'll tell you what's wrong. All we think about is how to make money without working hard. How to retire at 30, how to keep up with the Jones' how to look cool showing how much money we make which we think makes us look smarter. In fact, we are not going anywhere because we don't know how to work hard as a country. We are individuals not a team at work and we want to earn a lot of money for easy jobs.
I have always wondered why the US politicians doesn't find it absurd when they overtly come out to show they are impending someone's progress. How's that a good thing to deliberately put impediments in another's way. They should learn to invest in the right things instead of throwing so much money into things that doesn't help the country
