    Good information and straight to the point. In most other videos I have checked out, the person doing the video seems to enjoy hearing themselves talk. This guy gets to the point without all the b.s. Thank you Mr. Fortin for taking the time out to do this video, it helped me solve the problem on my 79 El Camino.

    Hey nice tutorial video but I think you should have used a light to brighten up the area in question. The engine was on a stand.

    this only works to keep it in good mechanical condition. As far as starter not working, you might want to check the starter control circuit. You can also have a few teeth broken off of the flywheel/flexplate, this will sound like a starter with a stripped pinion gear.

    Hi ..so I put starter on. worked fine came home started it on to check if it turned on. but know it sounds like what your saying, so did it do that . sorry this was my first time putting a starter. I didn't know nothing about the shim thing. so the Other question is could know the starter or flywheel brake? or do I have a chance to put the shim. I really don't know .thanks

      If your flywheel is broken, you need to remove your transmission and torque converter, there are six bolts that hold the flywheel in place fastening the back of the crankshaft. Also, is it possible that you didn't have the bolts tight enough? Check your torque specs for the application you are working on. This is a Chevy, 350 cid engine. I'm sure that it is the same for most small block engines, and a few small block based v6 applications like 4.3 vortec. But mostly the same for rear wheel drive GM models.

      Also, if the flywheel broke, damage has already been done. But after replacing the damaged flywheel, it is very important to properly shem the starter during the final installment.

    I put a starter in my car with no shims...it doesn't grind but it makes a knocking sound and wont start but after a few ignition turns it will start...will shimming eliminate this?

      You might want to check the condition of the ring gear on the flex plate or flywheel.

    hello I need your urgent help ... send this message using the google translator because I do not speak English so I don't know if it is understood ... My problem is this, I have a Chevrolet v6 229 that suddenly began to break the cover of the starts . Have the engine flywheel or "flexplate" repaired and when you turn it on, the starter locks and generates force ... what can it be (the boot has its respective shims) what is the distance in "centimeters" that should be the start? , will it be necessary to use 3 shims or more? ??

    • @tj1147
      @tj1147  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a SAE measurement between the pinion shaft of the starter and the ring gear teeth. 1/8 of an inch. In metric it is 3.175 millimeters. This is assuming the ring gear teeth are in good conditions. If they are worn, they will need replacements. I hope this helps you.

    How on earth can I even do this test, when the starter is installed, there's no where for me to insert the Allen key

    • @lucasrasmussen5298
      @lucasrasmussen5298 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paint the pinion gear to see where the flywheel hits it, install the starter, start it a few times and pull the starter out to check placement

    • @tj1147
      @tj1147  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, this only works on some older GM vehicles, you can take the flywheel cover, yes it's hard to do unless you have the engine on a stand. It can be checked installed, just really hard to reach.
