  • This is one of the most difficult video I've ever recorded. I've been hesitant to publish this until now, 6 months after I quit my job and currently experiencing the new chapter of my life living in Asia as a free man.
    As fancy as it may sound, working in Startegy Consulting is not all about rainbow and glitter. I've been working in Strategy Consulting and M&A for almost a decade. I climbed the career ladder and earned a high salary that I couldn't have imagined when I started my career. But behind the closed doors, there have been a lot of challenges. I decided to break free after figuring one thing out.
    It's a very difficult life decision for me to make and this video explains my rationale for making such a move.

    It takes a lot of courage to do what you have done and I am so glad you listened to your inner voice to go see your grandma, and not to your line manager. There is nothing more important than your personal wellbeing and your health. With best wishes to you.

    You’re so right about thinking about the worst case scenario and seeing if it is acceptable. If it is then accepting it and moving forward. A lot of us our worst case scenario isn’t that bad but everything is always worse in our heads.

    Good for you. I left my career after over 20 years because of similar situation. I wanted to take 6-12 months off and start a new career that was less stressful and better work-life balance. Problem is this was shortly before COVID hit, so I was out for over 3 years total, and it's been tough finding work after all that time off. Granted, I have kids and can't really relocate, and remote jobs are drying up faster than the Sahara desert, so I'm really restricted. But yes you are right, family and friends and personal time is worlds more important than having a high salary.

      Many thanks for sharing your comment and your story! I'm sorry to hear about the challenges that have occurred to you and indeed the labour market has been evolving rapidly since the pandemic. Somehow I hold the view that there is certain equilibrium in our life that we cannot break. To me, my inner peace and meaningful relationship and friendship are my top priorities at the moment and I'm ready to accept whatever side effects (or say consequences) associated with this decision. Closing one door will open up new paths in life and looking ahead, I'm sure better things are yet to come! I wish you all the best!

      @@ThePathsBeyond Thank you. Good luck to you too. It seems there's no middle ground. If I could work 30-32 hrs/week I would. But it's all or nothing it seems. Working 50 hrs/wk at a high stress high paying job or 20 hrs/wk at Walmart, LOL. Hope you find a good path going forward.

      @htwingnut in the end it also depends on how much is enough for ourselves and what lifestyle do we choose. If the aim is to have more luxury, then it will require higher salary / more working hours. We have started exploring to live in different countries and you’ll be surprised how little you’ll need to live well and you can get some insights from our other videos. Then of course, it’ll imply relocation / re-establish new social life, get used to new culture, etc. We are still on this exploration phase and will share more as it unfolds 😊

  • @eriksori
    @eriksori หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think it’s a beautiful thing that you have two parents to fall back up on. Many people like me actually have to support their parents instead for cultural reasons. So we have to put up with it longer. But ultimately money don’t buy happiness.

    • @ThePathsBeyond
      @ThePathsBeyond  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Indeed everybody’s situation is so different. In my case, I have been supporting my family financially since I started working and I’m lucky that they are still at good age that I might still be exercised not being around them and pursuing my own path. The point I referred to in terms of them supporting me unconditionally, it’s more about them being a safe harbour with a roof for me in case my personal ‘worst’ scenario happened. Nevertheless, it’s very difficult to balance personal path and family responsibilities / obligations. I’m trying to value more the present and be as happy as I can. Will cross the bridge when I come to it.

    I've mainly worked normal full time jobs but in-between jobs I did do some consulting (some on the side). After years of watching and working with consultants, I'm glad I didn't work in that part of the industry. There is a lot of politics and perception games to play and I tried to give them what they needed but sometimes not what they asked for. One company that let me go early because I pushed bad on the design was closed down completely 2 years later. The entire division not just that group. Most consultants come in and take simple tasks (if you let them). Others will create abstractions which is another con-game since they are putting a wrapper on something that works and they can waste a year on it. Consulting is a tough gig now.

    • @ThePathsBeyond
      @ThePathsBeyond  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for sharing your experience which really resonates with me. In my experience, I have had more internal political wars within my own consulting firm which is very emotionally draining to me. It's not a good feeling knowing that whatever I do or say, my co-workers may take advantage of that to their own benefits. The one who is louder often times takes all the credits. I understand it can happen everywhere but in consulting industry, it gets more intense. Now with AI advancement, consulting industry is indeed getting more and more challenging if they can not upgrade their services fast.
