Since i started cycling I became a lot more chilled when driving / being held up. Often angry drivers have other issues in their lives, cycling would help them cope with that ironically.

I think many drivers are actually just not confident overtaking cyclists safely so they get stressed out. Might start dressing as a horse see if that helps.

I think the internet is just angry in general. Politics, Sports , cyclist and drivers...everyone is just trying to let out some frustration on whatever is directly in front of them at the time. We can't let that stuff in, we just keep our heads down and focused on the things that make us happy.

It's never an issue here in France, most drivers fully respect cyclists because it's a country that has a true cycling culture. I love England though...

In the U.S., I'm a regular cycling commuter, but was driving to work the other day. I found myself grumbling about a cyclist I saw. Usually I'm very supportive, but he was the type that gives everyone a bad name.
He was weaving back and forth between going with and against traffic on what is usually a busy road. It was around dawn, no lights, helmet or anything that would be deemed safety eqpt.
I teach a small cycling group at a school and I always say that when working with traffic you need people to see you, then you need to be predictable. If not, then they don't know how to respond to you and that increases stress levels for the drivers.

They are of most risk to themselves. What is crazy is branding all the same. Most motorists are fine but around one in ten put all cyclists at risk. Could be a variety of reasons including impatience, boy racing, lack of empathy and awareness, not just hating cyclists.

When someone uses a blanket statement like "I hate cyclists, or, I hate drivers" they are the problem.
As someone who has been cycling since the age of 8, I can safely say that drivers just see cyclists as another obstacle to get around to make their journey faster, they don't see a human being, they just see an obstacle.

Cycling around roads in West Midlands, we have busy roads and lovely country roads. Main issue with drivers is they trying to get everywhere at warp speed. Since I’ve been cycling for last 10 years, I’ve changed my own attitude towards driving from a stress head to we will get there safely first. I always pull over and let motorist past but the recent overhaul of the Highway Code seems to have lit the blue torch paper. There’s enough roads/ space for all of us, the older generation need to chill the hell out as they are by far the worst of the lot😅

"When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." I don't know who said it but it explains it pretty well imho.. speaking from the perspective as a every day cyclist in Germany. Car country.. as we call it ourselves. Cities, infrastructure, markets and commerce and in the end mentality build for cars for years and years. Public space is for everyone. But cyclists now taking space away, how dare they! Or so it feels like for the car people. It's just a lot of frustration and cyclists are an easy trigger. I'm pretty sure most of the car folks don't even now what they are angry about..

I had a work mate who told me that bikes should stay off the roads because the roads were for cars. I replied WHAT? First came the foot paths, then the horse and buggy, then the polluting cars followed. I told him roads were to transport people. In which he had no response too. I guess I won that debate! I just did a quick search and found this, and no It wasn't lost and I just found it. German Inventor Karl von Drais is credited with developing the first bicycle. His machine, known as the "swiftwalker," hit the road in 1817. This early bicycle had no pedals, and its frame was a wooden beam. The device had two wooden wheels with iron rims and leather-covered tires.

As a Transit Driver and cyclist here! I'll answer your question a little...
I don't know what you call them in the UK, but here in Canada a regular license is called G class (here in Ontario anyways). G license drivers become complacent and get inconsiderate very quickly. Hell, I was guilty of that before driving professionally. Basic license drivers don't look further than the car ahead of them and are stupid/nasty to each other/everyone.. To be honest they barely adhere to the Highway Traffic Act at all, especially drivers that have had their license for a long time.
I have been in 3 accidents none of them my fault already (strangely around Christmas) driving transit. Last January a fellow driver took me out while driving my personal vehicle while driving to work. I am lucky I walked away with some bruising.
Consider this. I have to renew my license every 5 years and I am up for it in 2024. Here in Canada we forget driving is a PRIVILEGE not a right. If it was up to me drivers with a basic license would write the written aspect of the HTA every few years.
As Transit Driver my worst NIGHTMARE is to hurt ANYONE, wether it be a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist. Every shift I am cut off by another motorists at least 10-12 times a shift. I also have to contend with pedestrians not following walk signs and passengers thinking you're the Google search engine...
I've never had cyclist draft off me like you mentioned earlier. Here in Canada a cyclist can be charged under the our highway traffic act. It takes at least 3 times the stopping distance to make a complete stop in a bus. Consider I have passengers standing on board while traveling the near speed limit. Everyone out there DON'T draft a bus physics WILL WIN. Also we have cameras that surround the vehicle in operation.
I live in a rural area and I notice some road cyclist group riders make their own rules up on the road (there probably G license drivers as well). When I ride my bike I always think I will always lose to physics when riding with automobiles despite being in the "Right of Way".
To any Cyclist who drives or Drivers who cycle. When was the last time you reviewed your Highway Traffic Act?
That being said... Be safe everyone!
Gravel Bikes are Great! I don't have to stick to the roads!

it's the same here in Western Canada. I think people are generally uber stressed out these days. People in cars "who are easily triggered" most likely have some legit issues in their lives that they aren't dealing with LOL. You can't have this conversation where I live with the people who are triggered by it because they generally can't think rationally. My best explanation is that most of us look good (in our kit), and we definitely look happy (most of the time) while riding and this pisses people off LOL.

The other day while on my bike, I pulled over on a narrow bit of road to let a car past. He hooted and shouted abuse as he came by. When I caught up with him at the lights, I politely enquired as to what his issue was. Turns out he was unhappy that I'd let him past when he was quite happy to continue hanging back behind me through the narrow bit. I offered him a medal for his kindness and consideration and apologised for being courteous myself.

Hello Dave great debate. I drive and ride a bike. Every time I go out for a ride I can count 2 or 3 times I nearly get pushed off the road off car drivers. It’s getting worse on the roads lately, in my opinion the majority of the time it is older people that deliberately try to ride as close as possible. I've found that rural drivers are far more laid back about cyclists than those in cities (especially London). I can count on one hand how many adverse encounters I've had on country lanes but would have to take my shoes and socks off to count those in a city (and that's despite 90% of my riding being out in the sticks!). As you suggest though, it doesn't matter what a cyclist does, some drivers just have no patience with them and there's no way you can odds that! I tend to just ignore any toots or hand gestures I get from motorists, which weirdly sometimes makes them even angrier!
In other news, I didn't realise you were from Essex originally (thought you were a London lad). If you, Thomas Martinez and I got together for a video, there wouldn't be a single T uttered (sorry, u'erred!) in the middle of any word! 🤣

As a cyclist in the US (Midwest/republican state specifically) I've experienced a lot of aggression from drivers. A month ago I was riding around a local airport with no traffic around and this truck coming the opposite direction decided to swerve across the middle of the road towards me. Nearly took me out. That was one of the few instances I actually called the police, who of course did fuck all. I don't understand the cyclist hate, but I definitely understand the aggressive driver hate. Maybe it's just where I live, but I never know if the next vehicle passing will be the one to kill me. Sometimes they throw shit at you, other times they buzz you as close as possible, some will brake check you, some yell at you to get off the (empty) road. It's madness.

However, when a diesel truck rolls down their window and calls you a fucking liberal right as they try to coal roll you, the reason is fairly obvious. There has been a trend in southern conservative states to target cyclists this way. Look up the news in Texas for example.

The vast majority of drivers don’t hate/tolerate us cyclist I believe. However if just one per cent do have anger/impatience to us then it can be a problem if we use the road regularly. Riding solo I find is less an issue here in Devon where they can usually get past us. In a group then it can very dangerous as we can be a longer obstacle. I find street furniture in the middle of a road can cause issues as motorists try to get past then cut in to avoid the furniture.

Live and let live. It goes both ways. Drivers passing me so close I can smell their armpits through the passing cars closed window.
And cyclists riding in the middle of the road holding up bunch of traffic.
Its simple. When I am driving give me space and I will pass you when safe to do so with enough space.
When Im riding I keep to the side of the road, and if the road is narrow and twisty with no opportunities to overtake after a minute or 2 I will stop on the side and let the cars pass me.

It's weird... I've heard people complain about getting held up by cyclists, but never about red lights, they complain "bikes cause traffic jams and hold ups" yet I've never seen a bike on the motorway, where the traffic is held up frequently... there is no rhyme or reason to it. I reckon a lot of it is cyclists are a readily identifiable target.
One thing that I dislike is the whole language around the subject... "motorists" "cyclists" whatever the term, is dehumanising in nature when the issue is not the mode rather the human. For me the attitude from some people driving motor vehicles is one of either disinterest or entitlement, coupled with carelessness while operating their multi ton steel cage.
In terms of social media... it's a BS place. Written communication is the most difficult and incredibly few people are trained in it and even less are good at it. If you sat down with the people and talked through the issues then let them go away and think about it, I expect you would find the majority a lot more reasonable than their keyboard suggests they are. on social media few are really interested in nothing more than expressing their opinions, like chihuahuas pissing on the local post...

I think this is an etiquette issue. Drivers have been following a certain ’proper’ way of using the road ways. This usually means try to not hold up others around you, also because in a car you’re usually trying to get somewhere quickly, for example work. Driving isn’t a leisure sport, it’s a destination machine. As a biking commuter, I can see paralleled annoyances with being held up for a perceived not necessary hold up. Basically, I believe it’s a mindset issue, which is why it’s so hard to understand. We can’t seem to put ourselves in the others shoes, and even if we can, we use our own biases against the others. Well, I hope this ramble makes some sense, cheers

Thing is, I didn't mind it in the end, it just became part of riding in the city... now I'm back in Essex, people give you so much room it's not even funny... apart from the odd driver, so far, they've all been pretty good!

Many cyclists are car drivers, and so all car drivers can't hate cyclists! :)
I think the reaction is party about "othering" a different community. There's always a group that is seen as behaving irresponsibly - Sunday drivers, BMW drivers, Audi drivers, white van man, whoever.
And then there's a cultural thing where no-one wants to think that they are a bad driver or do somethings wrong, so they forgive other drivers. There's a feeling that the rules of the road are kinda guidelines - eg no-one sticks rigidly to the speed limit, but they are close enough to not feel bad about speeding. A driver sees another driver go through the lights on amber turning to red and thinks "oh, that was a bit tight mate",. But when it comes to cyclists, if they don't have experience of being there on a bike, the same person seeing a cyclist do it says "bloody cyclists, always running red lights".

They also do not appreciate the fact they have 2.5 tonnes in their favour...if they hit me , they get a dent and what happens to me???

I see drivers tail cyclists all the time when I'm driving. OR there are people who just don't know how to drive their cars and they get angry at cyclists for forcing them to be careful. Go figure. When I drive, I give cyclist such a wide berth because I KNOW what it's like to worry the entire time that some driver is gonna try to run me off the road---just because.

I use to live in Colorado in a major college town. And in my experience drivers that are triggered by cyclists tend to be of a conservative political affiliation. They see cyclists as the personification of the other side that they hate with everything they have. I have been hit 4 times, had things thrown at me, been buzzed and crop dusted by big diesel trucks. I was even part of a group ride that got pulled over by cop for riding 2 abreast. And when someone tried to explain to him that it’s legal he started writing tickets. It’s not about us being in the way. It’s about what they think is there culture being taken away from them. Also some people are just aholes and everything you think about Americans being selfish pricks might be true.

Like the ones that go through red lights, teens doing wheelies right in front of oncoming traffic, or the ones that ride at night with no lights. Some drivers have no idea what cyclists have to think about, like avoiding the many pot holes at the edge of the road, so if they pass too close and you do try to avoid a pothole, you could end up almost being hit by the car passing you. But some of these drivers could do with leaving the car at home at getting out on a bike, then they will understand.

I think you have to detach the 'cyclist' and the 'driver'. They are just people, and there are decent people and idiots on the road in both groups, cyclists and drivers.
I commute to work, as well as ride at the weekend. Most of my experience with drivers is pure selfishness or lack of planning which comes in the form of close passes.
There have been a handful times when a close pass is deliberate. I was out recently on a Sunday at 6am (to avoid being a 'nuisance' to other road users) and the road was completely clear when a 5 Series literally buzzed me at 40mph in a 30 zone. Unfortunately, I don't have cameras on my road bike ... yet.
With regards to cycling in groups, or 2 or more abreast, I won't do it. I understand why some like to have a natter when cycling but for me the road is for everyone's use and selfishly hogging the road on a Sunday morning is idiotic IMO. Ride with respect and consideration of other road users and natter at the cafe.

The majority of people pass fine you dobthe odd close pass but it's usually from people not paying attention. People on the Internet never go very far and want everyone to have a miserable life like they do. Nobody driving sets off to kill a cyclist. He had simply made a mistake and not looked properly and took it all in. Where in social media land its all they did this. I can't get past a 2 cyclist yet I'm able to overtake a car. It's a different story commuting by bike at rush hour in the West Midlands.
Close passes are the least of your worries. Regularly get pulled out on, driven at as if I was invisible, left-hooked and nearly been reversed over twice in the same one-way street.
I've been threatened with a kicking when shouting at a particularly close pass, swung at for entering a round-about before a van, even though I had right of way, the list goes on.
Good job I've been cycling for years and have a good sense of impending danger or I wouldn't be here today.
The best thing to do is to expect everyone on the road to do something stupid and unpredictable and if they don't it's a nice surprise!
There are obviously some decent, courteous drivers out there, but it shouldn't be the case that it makes your day when you encounter one! Surely they should be the norm, rather than the exception!
It's no shock to me to see this article saying that West Midlands roads are among the worst for angry drivers and road rage incidents.
