Azhwars literally means "people who are immersed'. They are so called because they were immersed in their devotion and love to their Lord, Vishnu.Azhwars are considered the twelve supreme devotees of Vishnu in the Tamil-speaking regions.The religious works of these saints in Tamil, songs of love and devotion, are compiled as Nalayira Divya Prabandham .

Azhwars have composed in other languages, too. For example, Kulasekhara Azhwar composed the Mukundamala which is a Sanksrit composition. Perhaps we should fight less over the language, and focus on the message.

(Also it is incorrect to say they are Tamizh as Kulasekhara Azhwar is believed to have been a Keralite king, Kulasekhara Varma.)
