Well, the US has a lot of "wide open spaces." It's taken for granted that the RoR will be used by hikers and locals wanting shortcuts. In this particular case, the rails were fenced off but the "locals" didn't let the fences slow them down.

@@GilmerJohn We have laws here in the US against trespassing on railroad property(locomotives, railcars, tracks, access roads) that said they are not being enforced like they used to be not to mention we have corrupt District Attorneys, prosecutors and Judges who are not doing their job and instead are releasing criminals from jails and prisons and also letting those being arrested by law enforcement right back onto the streets soon after. I have heard that there are even some train crews who are being assaulted by some of these criminals as well. It isn't just the containers on these trains that are being stolen from. The problem is much bigger than just these trains and we need to bring an end to this as soon as possible.

Alot railroad tracks are fenced off in alot of places and no one is going arrested simply crossing over them, but even so this isn't the first time thieves cause a derailment. Not to long ago thieves have been going around stealing metal pieces that kept tracks together to sell for scrap and that as even cause a derailment near where I live.

The seals that most of the companies dispatching those containers and dry freight semi trailers would be using are not intended to prevent the container etc from being broken into, only as an indication that the trailer etc has not been tampered with and resealed!

They should be using bolt seals. A bit more expensive but honestly in comparison to the value of the products inside is it really worth not spending an extra dollar on a steel seal that requires bolt cutters to open instead of the cheap plastic seals that can be very easily opened with 1 finger and a sharp jerk of your arm?

Oh it affects everyone who buys anything that needs to be delivered. That includes going to a store to buy it. The shelves don't spontaneously refill themselves. A train brought it to a distribution warehouse, and then a truck takes it to the stores. That includes groceries. Every single time a theft occurs, prices go up...for everyone, regardless of geographical location. Ship, train, truck. Any loss of product in that chain and it costs the consumer. By letting this happen, CA is sh*tting on all of us, whether people know it or not. Most imports come into the west coast ports. Crime costs the law abiding. Even on the east coast.

Because these thieves know that anything other than murder will not be prosecuted in LA according to the DA there that will continue to give these thieves the impression that they can get away with it so they'll keep on doing it because they have nothing to be afraid of. Federal officials won't do anything. Hell they won't do anything about beefing up the border patrol and allowing them to do what they ARE supposed to be able to do so do you really think the Feds at the top give a crap about crime like this to send in federal agents to patrol RR property. The railroads don't want to have to pay the money to hire all of this extra security to keep looters off of their property because hiring more of their own police or a subcontractor to provide the extra security is very expensive. That is why Union Pacific is pleading with LA's gov't to crack down on crime and do something about this. Until they replace the DA with one that will do his JOB thieves like this will have NO FEAR.

If there was too much debris/packages that got caught under the intermodal wells that could've easily derailed the cars or caused them to pick a switch if fouled. Intermodal well cars sit very low to the ground so anything that gets caught underneath them can lead to a derailment.

I think this is the tip of the Iceberg in the US. This isn't about railroads, trespass or looting. I think the root cause of all this lays with WHY people feel the need to loot in the first place. Why are they risking so much to get a leg up?
There are many countries in the world where railway freight isn't protected and also isn't broken into and stolen (Not nearly to this level).
Perhaps if the US actually supported ALL of its people then this wouldn't happen. Yeah, it's great to be "free" but I feel individualistic freedom doesn't help a society move forwards, only the rich.

Increase in security won't work if the guards are barred by law from using force. Cops react to crime, they aren't guards. They aren't going to sit around and wait for a crime to occur in front of them. If your guards have to wait for the cops to arrive to deal with a crime in progress, then you may as well cut the guards out of the equation and just wait for police. What ever damage occurs in that time, has to be eaten by the insurance company, which will trickle back in a round about way in the form of higher insurance costs. Eventually, if the losses are high enough over a long enough period, you'll start to see trains and shipping centers moving out of the area.
This is why 3rd world countries never develop. Without law and order, you can't conduct business. In this globalized world, there is always a cheaper alternative. If this city won't protect their economy, these companies will simply move there operations elsewhere.
One way or another, somebody has to pay for the damages. And it's not going to be the capitalists.

Ok so these huge companies like Union Pacific can't hire 24/7 security for that area? put up some heavy duty barb wire high fences, then guard stations/towers. The loss from theft and damages and costs of derailments has to be a lot more than what it would cost for security. And, when trespassers and thieves are caught don't just give them a slap on the wrist. Give them good jail time.

UP could if they wanted to but they choose NOT to. In fact, they laid off a significant portion of their police force to satisfy the Wall Street devils.

It’s entering a train yard at a port? What u want it to go in the fuckn ocean? Then all the all the packages are fuckd. Let’s practice risk management
. Lost packages = not the railroads problem + not the shippers problem = nobody’s fuckn problem
That’s a simple algebraic equation to help u understand what’s going on here

How can we stop this though, realistically? Mandating heavy duty locks? or maybe security guard on every car, or heavy surveillance, all enforced or government funded for rail safety?

A rail car full of agents, with automatic firearms. Leave the tracks littered with thieving vermin. It's time to be realistic about who and what is so often a plaque upon decent society. We must stop making excuses for vermin.

Faster moving trains really does wonders. Thieves generally are too scared to even approach it. However, the increase in delivery in this pandemic times and long, slow freight trains are making this impossible.
