Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi was an eminent Islamic scholar, theologian, and exegete who was born in 1863 in the present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. He played a significant role in the field of Quranic studies and Islamic thought during the early 20th century.
Maulana Farahi was known for his unique approach to understanding the Quranic text. He emphasized the study of the Quran within its own context, taking into account its linguistic, historical, and literary aspects. He believed that a holistic understanding of the Quran was essential to grasp its true message and intended meanings.
Farahi's approach, known as "nazm" (coherence), aimed to identify the thematic and structural coherence within the Quran. He argued that the Quranic verses are interconnected and form a cohesive whole, and interpreting them individually without considering their context might lead to misunderstandings.
Maulana Farahi's scholarly contributions include his Tafsir (exegesis) of the Quran, titled "Nizam al-Quran" (The System of the Quran). This work outlines his unique approach to understanding the Quranic text and provides valuable insights into its coherence and interconnectedness.
Farahi was also actively involved in various educational and reformist movements in the Indian subcontinent. He was associated with the Nadwatul Ulama institution, an influential Islamic seminary in Lucknow, India. He was an advocate for modern educational reforms while maintaining a deep commitment to preserving the traditional Islamic heritage.
Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi passed away in 1930, leaving behind a lasting impact on Quranic studies and Islamic scholarship. His ideas and methodologies continue to influence scholars and researchers in the field of Quranic exegesis and Islamic thought.

Amin Ahsan Islahi was a renowned Pakistani Islamic scholar, philosopher, and exegete. He was born on April 22, 1904, in Uttar Pradesh, India, and later migrated to Pakistan after the partition in 1947. Islahi was a prominent figure in the field of Quranic exegesis (Tafsir) and had a profound understanding of Islamic philosophy, economics, and social issues.
Islahi was greatly influenced by the teachings of Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi, another prominent scholar of his time. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to studying and interpreting the Quran, and his notable work includes his exegesis of the Quran titled "Tadabbur-e-Quran" (Reflections on the Quran). This extensive work spans several volumes and is considered a valuable contribution to Quranic studies.
Amin Ahsan Islahi was not only a scholar but also an active participant in various Islamic movements in the subcontinent. He played a crucial role in the revival of the Islamic ideology and contributed to the intellectual discourse on Islamic principles and their practical applications in society.
Islahi passed away on December 15, 1997, in Lahore, Pakistan, leaving behind a rich legacy of scholarship and insightful works on Islam and the Quran. His contributions continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars and students of Islamic studies worldwide.

Thematic coherence, as emphasized by Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi, refers to the interconnectedness and consistency of themes and messages throughout the Quran. It suggests that the verses of the Quran are not random or disjointed but form a cohesive and interconnected structure. Here are a few simple examples to illustrate thematic coherence:
Example 1: Theme of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah)
The Quran consistently emphasizes the concept of Tawhid, the belief in the Oneness of Allah. This theme runs through various chapters and verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Ikhlas, Allah says:
"Say, 'He is Allah, the One,
    Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'" (Quran 112:1-4)
This verse highlights the concept of the absolute Oneness of Allah. Throughout the Quran, similar verses reinforce this central theme, emphasizing the monotheistic belief in one God.
Example 2: Theme of Mercy and Compassion
The Quran consistently portrays Allah as the Most Merciful and emphasizes the importance of showing mercy and compassion towards others. For instance, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 69, Allah says:
"But if they turn away, [O Muhammad], say, 'Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.'" (Quran 9:129)
This verse, along with many others, reflects the theme of seeking refuge and relying on Allah's mercy and guidance. Throughout the Quran, verses that highlight Allah's mercy and encourage believers to show compassion towards others contribute to the thematic coherence of mercy and compassion.
Example 3: Theme of Accountability and Judgment
The Quran consistently reminds individuals of the Day of Judgment and the accountability for their actions. For example, in Surah Al-Inshiqaq, verses 6-8, Allah says:
"O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will be judged with an easy account and return to his people in happiness." (Quran 84:6-9)
This verse, along with numerous others, underscores the theme of accountability and the eventual judgment of individuals based on their deeds. Throughout the Quran, verses that discuss the Day of Judgment and the consequences of one's actions contribute to the thematic coherence of accountability and judgment.
These examples highlight how the Quran maintains thematic coherence by consistently addressing and reinforcing key concepts and messages across different chapters and verses.
This coherence enhances the understanding of the Quran as a unified and interconnected scripture.

Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi's approach to understanding the Quran, known as "nazm" or coherence, emphasizes studying the Quranic verses within their own context and understanding their interconnectedness. Let's illustrate his approach with a simple example:
    Example:
In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177, Allah says:
"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves."
Maulana Farahi's approach would involve understanding this verse in the context of the surrounding verses and the broader themes of the Quran.
    Contextual Understanding:
Farahi would analyze the verses before and after this one to grasp the connection between them. He might also consider the historical background and the circumstances under which the verse was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
    Thematic Coherence:
Maulana Farahi would explore how this verse is related to the central theme of the Quran. In this case, the verse emphasizes that righteousness is not merely about performing external rituals (turning faces towards the east or the west), but it is based on genuine faith in Allah and good deeds, such as giving charity and helping others.
    Contrast with Traditional Approaches:
Traditional approaches to interpreting the Quran might focus on the literal meanings of individual words and phrases, without considering the broader context or the thematic connections with other verses. For instance:
    Literal Interpretation:
A traditional interpretation might focus solely on the phrases "east" and "west" and argue that righteousness is not about facing a specific direction during prayer. While this interpretation is correct at a superficial level, it may miss the deeper message about the essence of righteousness.
    Comparison:
Maulana Farahi's approach, on the other hand, delves deeper into the verse's meaning by exploring the broader context and thematic coherence. He highlights the true essence of righteousness, which lies in sincere belief and good deeds, as opposed to mere external acts.
In summary, Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi's approach to understanding the Quran involves contextual analysis and exploring thematic coherence to grasp the deeper meanings of the verses. This approach contrasts with traditional interpretations that may focus more on literal meanings without considering the broader context and interconnectedness of the Quranic verses.
